Travelogue of Mochou Lake: A Vast Expanse of Misty Waves Carries a Millennium of History, Half a City's Moonlight and Breeze Witness the Vicissitudes of Time. Standing atop the Ming City Wall of Nanjing, I lean on the railing and gaze into the distance at Mochou Lake. A stretch of misty waves spreads far into the horizon, and amidst the hazy water vapor, I seem to fall into the millennia-long river of time in Jinling. The lake water before my eyes is vast and boundless; gazing into the distance, it is difficult to distinguish where the lake ends and where the once-great river began. This natural, expansive artistic conception harbors the lake's transformations across a thousand years, as well as the unique cultural essence and spirit of Jinling. Mochou Lake, anciently known as Hengtang, was also called Shicheng Lake because of its proximity to Stone City (Shitoucheng). Thousands of years ago, this was originally a shallow bay along the Yangtze River's bank, where the mighty river merged seamlessly with the lake. The rise and fall of the river tides, carrying the waters of the Qinhuai River, mingled freely and surged unchecked. At that time, Hengtang was not merely a gentle watery expanse; it was also a natural water barrier for Stone City. The Tiger-Sitting Stronghold (Shitoucheng) built on Qingliang Mountain guarded the gateway to Jiangnan. This stretch of tidal flats and swamps connected to the river and sea, forming a natural moat that made it difficult for invading enemies to land. It protected the stability of the Six Dynasties' Jinling. The flowing waters were armor, and the ripples were defense lines; mountains and rivers interlocked, fortifying the western gate of the ancient capital. As the misty waves shifted, the gentle grace of Tang poetry drifted over with the lake breeze. Cui Hao's lines, "Where do you live, my dear? I live by Hengtang. Stop the boat, might I ask: Could we be from the same hometown?" fully captured the warmth and human touch of ancient Hengtang's waters. A small boat floats on the lake, and strangers meeting by chance exchange tales of home amid the sound of water. These twenty characters vividly portray the tender romance of Jiangnan's watery landscape, forever imprinting the name Hengtang into the rhythm of Tang poetry, softening a thousand years of time. The lake's renaming to Mochou (meaning "No Sorrow") originates from a poignant folk legend. During the Southern Qi dynasty, the gentle and kind-hearted Lady Mochou lived here, embodying benevolence and compassion throughout her life. Yet her fate was fraught with misfortune; ultimately, she jumped into this lake, upholding her pure heart and steadfast spirit. The people, moved by her virtuous character, renamed Shicheng Lake to Mochou Lake, wishing that all may dispel their worries and live without sorrow year after year. From then on, a lake of emerald waters hid tender emotions, and the name Mochou became a cherished thought, blending human legends with the beauty of lake and mountains, adding a rich and vivid chapter to this expanse of water. As the moon and wind changed, dynasties rose and fell, all consigned to the flowing waters. Two more immortal poems expressed the vicissitudes and melancholy of ancient Jinling. Liu Yuxi wrote: "The thousand-fathom iron chains sank to the riverbed; a white surrender flag appeared from Stone City," depicting the fall of Jinling after the Western Jin conquest of Wu. The once-impregnable Stone City ultimately could not resist the changes of the world, and its royal aura faded away. Lady Huarui's words: "The king raised the white flag atop the city wall—how could I, confined in the palace, know? One hundred and forty thousand men laid down their arms—not a single one was a man." Each word drips with blood, full of the grief and irony of national ruin. A vessel of Mochou water silently witnessed the changing of dynasties and the transfer of mountains and rivers. Beneath the gentle waves lie the heavy pasts of countless rises and falls of states. Time brings great changes; the river's course shifted, silt accumulated year by year, and later, artificial embankments were built, cutting off the water system. Mochou Lake, once connected to the Yangtze River, was completely separated from the great river, becoming an enclosed urban lake. The once surging natural flowing water could no longer circulate naturally with the river tide. To preserve this clear lake, Nanjing began a long journey of lake management: pumping stations to draw water, pipeline networks to divert it, ecological dredging, and underwater planting. With human effort compensating for the changes in natural hydrology, annual financial investments are made, using electric power to drive water circulation and maintain the clarity of Mochou Lake. Looking at the lake's shimmering light, I cannot help but think of Yundang Lake in Xiamen, the "Egret Island." These two urban lakes share strikingly similar past and present lives. In ancient times, Yundang Lake was Yundang Harbor, connected to the sea. Flickering fishing lights, ebb and flow of tides—all were gifts of nature. Later, sea reclamation and embankment construction cut it off from the sea, turning the harbor into a closed lake. Once plagued by sewage accumulation and foul water, it became an ecological blight on the city. After decades of comprehensive treatment, Yundang Lake shed its old appearance and transformed into Xiamen's city living room, surrounded by a bustling CBD. Its clear blue waters reflect urban skylines, becoming a shining city card of the Egret Island. Mochou Lake and Yundang Lake are two mirrors of urban development, perfectly illustrating the dual destiny of urban lakes: they are both precious city assets and long-term financial burdens. As assets, lakes nourish the land, sustain urban ecology, with lush greenery around and picturesque scenery, enhancing the quality of living in the entire city. The millennium-long cultural vein coalesces in Mochou Lake; coastal charm is hidden in Yundang Lake. Lakes precipitate a city's cultural heritage, becoming a unique spiritual mark of a city. Living by the water brings elegant scenery and drives the booming development of surrounding residential, cultural, and tourism industries, adding immeasurable value to the city. As burdens, both lakes have lost their natural water circulation ability. The path of maintenance is long and costly. Yundang Lake, endowed with ocean tidal variations, uses the incoming tide to take in water and the outgoing tide to discharge it, achieving water replacement. Yet it still requires tens of millions of yuan annually for sewage interception, pollution control, sluice and pump operation, and comprehensive ecological maintenance. Mochou Lake, lacking tidal assistance, relies entirely on electric pumping and water diversion. Electricity costs, dredging fees, and ecological maintenance fees are allocated year after year, maintaining water balance by artificial means against nature. From a natural water body that once required no management costs to an urban waterscape that demands significant annual investment—this is the mark left by urban development and a responsibility that humans must bear in their coexistence with nature. Looking at famous cities around the world, almost all have a bright lake that accents their landscapes. Jinan's Daming Lake tints the entire city with tenderness; New York's Central Park lake carries the city's poetic charm. A lake always gently embraces a city's past and present. So it is with Mochou Lake. It has witnessed the glamour of the Six Dynasties, heard the soft chanting of Tang poetry, borne the rise and fall of nations, experienced hydrological changes, transformed from a river bay fortress into a city's bright lake, from a natural flowing water body into an artificially maintained scenic waterscape. The evening breeze sweeps across the lake, stirring layers of ripples. The stories of thousands of years are all condensed in these emerald waves of Mochou. It turns out that a city and its lake have always been a mutual endeavor. The city governs with care, protecting the lake's clarity; the lake repays the city with cultural heritage and scenery, giving tenderness. May these misty waves of Mochou endure forever, harboring Jinling's millennia of elegance. Year after year, may the blue waves remain as before, and may tranquility and freedom from sorrow prevail.
