The Truth Behind One Million Dollars: Why Are the Smartest Companies Pouring Money into Anthropic? Anthropic's enterprise clients are no fools; they are the world's top tech companies. They build models, run computing, and calculate costs themselves. They are willing to prepay one million dollars a year, not because they are stupid, but because they have done the math—it's worth the money. But "worth it" doesn't mean Anthropic can make a profit. On the contrary, the smarter the clients and the harder they push, the more Anthropic walks a knife's edge. And the key point is that Anthropic has already changed the contract. The one million dollars no longer ties to a fixed quota. Every line of code, every call, is charged additionally on a pay-per-use basis. **First Strike: Anthropic stealthily changed the contract, making the old ledger obsolete.** In November 2025, Anthropic began quietly making moves. What did the old enterprise contract look like? Companies paid a fixed fee, and each seat was tied to a token pool—like a prepaid mobile plan, giving you a certain amount of free usage, with overage fees beyond that. The new contract? Everything resets. A $20 per user per month base fee only buys you entry. On top of that, every token is billed at standard API rates with additional charges. The 10% to 15% API discounts from the old contract are all gone. Not only that, but clients must also accept a mandatory monthly minimum consumption commitment. Anthropic estimates how many tokens you will use in a month. You have to prepay that amount—whether you use it or not. After February 2026, new contracts' base seats no longer bundle any token quota. The old enterprise package, Standard Premium Seats, is completely discontinued. All new contracts and renewals are forcibly switched to the new model. In short, the old contract was like a prepaid phone plan; the new contract is a prepaid minimum consumption plus pay-per-use. The base fee only buys you a seat; every line of code costs extra. Frederick Philipson, co-founder of software licensing consultancy Redress Compliance, estimates that heavy users' costs will double, even triple. Anthropic's official explanation is that under the old model, some heavy users frequently hit usage caps, disrupting their work. Other users paid but never used up their quotas. The new pricing better reflects how clients actually use Claude, as workloads shift from fixed-seat productivity tools to agent applications. In plain English: You're using it too aggressively; the old plan can't sustain it. **Second Strike: What exactly is that one million dollars?** Anthropic currently has over 1,000 enterprise clients paying more than $1 million annually. Two months ago, that number was just over 500. The total contract value exceeds $10 billion, with an average customer spend of about $10 million per year. These clients are not outsiders. They are the world's top tech companies, building models, running computing, and calculating costs themselves. Do they use Cursor? Yes. Do they use Copilot? Yes. Are they testing Coding Plan? Yes, they are. They choose Anthropic and prepay huge sums for only one reason: after comparing the entire market, Claude's overall cost-performance ratio is indeed the highest in their internal assessments. But the prepayment itself says everything. The iron rule of business: if a client is willing to prepay for one, three, or five years at once, you must have given them a big discount. Otherwise, why wouldn't they pay monthly? Why wouldn't they pay per use? Why wouldn't they go to distributors or buy API directly from data centers? Anthropic's models are not sold exclusively through official channels. Plenty of distributors, cloud marketplaces, and third-party API proxies sell them, with fierce price competition. Clients prepay because the prepaid price is lower than the pay-per-use price—because they have calculated their usage. After the math, prepayment is cheaper. And what does "prepayment is cheaper" mean? It means their expected usage is so high that Anthropic is willing to offer a discount. It means they are buying a production tool that runs 24/7, not an occasional auxiliary plugin. **Third Strike: How do clients use up that one million dollars?** You write a script, schedule tasks through next year, and launch dozens of agent instances in parallel with a single API key. Running 7x24 without interruption, squeezing every second of computing power dry. This isn't heavy usage—this is the norm. Anthropic itself admits this. The official line is that the new pricing better reflects how clients actually use Claude, as workloads shift from fixed-seat productivity tools to agent applications. Agent applications don't need human supervision, don't clock in and out, don't take lunch breaks. Code tasks are endless. Legacy code needs refactoring, old bugs need fixing, and new requirements are always piling up. Clients aren't buying Claude as an IDE plugin for humans; they are buying an never-stopping army of digital employees. **Fourth Strike: After moving to pay-per-use, is Anthropic making money?** This is the real contradiction. Adrien Lorant, CEO of Intuition Labs, put it bluntly: "In our experience, enterprise clients have been paying massive overage fees for a long time. Most users already far exceeded the usage covered by the base seats. For some clients, base seat fees account for only about 20% of the total bill." Base seat fees are only 20%, meaning 80% of the bill comes from overages. Under the new contract, base seats no longer bundle any token quota. So that 80% overage becomes 100% of everything. Anthropic is indeed profitable on an accounting level. In Q2 2026, revenue was $10.9 billion. Operating profit was $559 million, and gross margin improved from -94% in 2024 to 50%. But the problem is that this profitability is based on charging every token at standard API rates. What if clients use it even harder? What if all 1,000 clients go into full-throttle squeeze mode? Anthropic's own computing costs are fixed—the XAI Clauses data center contract, the $30 billion order with Microsoft Azure, the tens of billions in TPU deals with Google. These costs must be paid regardless of how much clients use. The more clients use, the higher Anthropic's revenue (pay-per-use), but also the higher its costs (computing consumption). Whether gross margin holds depends on the difference between the standard API rate and the marginal computing cost. And Anthropic will never tell you that difference. **Fifth Strike: So why are clients still willing to prepay?** Back to the original question: since the new contract no longer bundles quotas, and every token is pay-per-use, why would clients still prepay $1 million? The answer is: prepayment locks in the unit price, not the total volume. The core logic of bulk purchasing has always been: commit to a minimum consumption to get a lower unit price. Clients prepay $1 million in exchange for a lower per-token price than retail API, priority compute scheduling, and 99.99% SLA guarantees. They are not prepaying for unlimited all-you-can-eat; they are prepaying at a wholesale price to buy tokens. They have done the math: running at retail API prices for a full year might cost $3 million or $5 million. Prepaying $1 million locks in the wholesale price, significantly reducing the total annual cost. So clients aren't stupid—they are shrewder than anyone. **Endgame: Who is betting on whom?** Anthropic bets that the standard API rate is far above marginal cost, so pay-per-use can make money. Clients bet that prepaying at wholesale prices is cheaper than paying retail per use. Both sides do the math, and both think they are winning. But the truth is, Anthropic's profitability is built on the meter. It is not betting that you use less; it is betting that the more you use, the more it earns. The only question in this bet is: when 1,000 of the smartest companies squeeze every ounce of your computing power every day, and your monthly computing bill is astronomical, is the gap between the standard API rate and marginal cost thick enough? Anthropic won't tell you the answer, but the real-world data in your hands is already speaking.
