From the metaphor of clocks to cognition, the debate between accidental coincidence and dynamic approximation of truth. There is a thought-provoking thought experiment: two antique clocks, both set to 12 o'clock at midnight. One stops completely, with its hour, minute, and second hands forever frozen at 12. The other, though functional, runs five minutes slow every hour. When 24 hours pass, the broken clock, because the actual time passes 12 o'clock twice, happens to show the correct time exactly twice. In contrast, the slow-running clock, with a cumulative deviation of five minutes per hour, never shows the correct time even once. This seemingly simple comparison of clocks is actually a subtle metaphor for our understanding of the world. It rips apart the disguise of superficial correctness versus substantive effectiveness, forcing us to re-evaluate the criteria for judging the value of cognitive theories. Is the significance of a theory rooted in occasional coincidences with facts, or in its continuous approximation of truth through dynamic correction? **I. Static Coincidence: The Illusion of Correctness in Rigid Theories** The broken clock is like those dead theories that, though obsolete, are still stubbornly clung to. Its twice-daily correct display is essentially an accidental overlap between static pointers and dynamic reality, not a grasp of the laws of time. Think of the geocentric theory of the Middle Ages: within the limitations of naked-eye observation, it could barely explain the sun rising in the east and setting in the west, and the waxing and waning of the moon. When people take an occasional match as proof of a theory's validity, they fall into a mindset of coping with change by staying unchanged, abandoning deep exploration of the essential laws of things. Like a traveler relying on an old map, even if a new road appears that doesn't match the map, they stubbornly believe the road is wrong rather than the map outdated. The correctness of a rigid theory is never an embrace of truth but a confinement of cognitive progress. It uses occasional coincidences to conceal its own absurdity, keeping cognition stagnant and depriving it of the possibility to break through boundaries. **II. Dynamic Deviation: The Imperfect Value of Evolving Theories** On the other hand, the clock that runs five minutes slow each hour, though it never shows the correct time in 24 hours, possesses a core advantage the broken clock will never have: a dynamic logical framework for operation and a correctable deviation property. It is not completely detached from reality; it merely has a stable, measurable deviation in speed from standard time. The regularity of being five minutes slow per hour precisely provides the basis for calibration. As long as we discover this deviation, we can bring it closer to real time by adjusting it five minutes faster each hour. Moreover, we can further optimize its internal structure, correct the gear speed, and transform it from an inaccurate clock into a precise one. This is akin to those imperfect yet evolving theories in the history of cognition. Early Copernicus proposed heliocentrism, which, though not breaking free from the limitation of circular orbits, deviated from the actual trajectories of planets. Yet it shattered the static cognitive framework of geocentrism, placed the sun at the center of the universe, and pointed the direction for subsequent astronomical research. Later, Kepler revised the orbital hypothesis of heliocentrism based on observational data, proposing the law that planets move in elliptical orbits, greatly improving the fit between theory and reality. Newton's law of universal gravitation further explained the source of power for celestial motions, making the heliocentric system more complete. These theories all had deviations, but their inaccuracy was a stage-specific defect in the process of exploration, not a fundamental failure. They could iterate continuously through practical feedback, gradually approaching truth through dynamic correction. **III. The metaphor of clocks will eventually fade, but the dialectic of cognition is endless. When faced with a rigid theory that is occasionally correct and an evolving theory that constantly corrects itself, we should clearly recognize that true cognitive progress never stems from a fascination with accidental coincidences, but from a commitment to dynamic approximation. Only by daring to admit imperfection and persistently correcting deviations in practice can we go further on the path of exploring truth.
