The state of Zhongshan was an isolated island surrounded by the Seven Warring States. In the map of the Warring States period, the world only knew of the seven hegemons vying for supremacy, but few were aware of Zhongshan, hidden deep within the territories of Yan and Zhao. It was never a legitimate vassal of Zhou ritual, its roots tracing back to the nomadic Baidi tribes of northern Shaanxi. Generations of migration brought it to the heart of the Central Plains, wedged into the crevices of Zhao’s interior. It was an island within the encirclement of the seven powers, a no-man’s buffer zone after the Partition of Jin. With a total population of no more than six hundred thousand, a territory as small as a pellet, lacking vast lands or natural defensive barriers, it was nevertheless an unshakable thousand-chariot strong state in the second tier of the Warring States. Born of the barbarian grasslands, it was naturally skilled in horseback archery. The war chariots of the Central Plains states all followed a three-man configuration—charioteer, spearman, and archer each with their own role—cumbersome and rigid. Zhongshan reformed its chariots into a narrow two-man design: one to drive, one to fight. Light and agile, suited for mountain warfare, its cavalry prowess was unmatched in the surrounding regions. For a century after its founding, surrounded by the great powers Yan, Zhao, Wei, and Qi, it was destroyed three times and revived three times. With minimal resources, it clung to survival on the razor’s edge of a chaotic age. At one point, it even breached the heart of Yan, plundered its capital’s wealth, and its edge sent shockwaves through the Central Plains’ feudal lords. Zhongshan was no mere barbarian brute. Its lands were rich in copper, which ancients called “auspicious gold.” Relying on this innate resource, its smelting and casting techniques reached unparalleled heights. The unique iron-footed bronze tripods it produced were unmatched in the world. Its inlaid gold and gilding craftsmanship was exquisite, and even its lamps were ingeniously constructed with hidden air channels. Smoke and flame concealed, light and shadow without a trace. Its frosted pottery was tempered to a metallic glaze, a marvel of fine workmanship. Sima Qian praised it in the *Records of the Grand Historian* with his own brush, and it possessed advanced survival strategies. Using its copper mines, it privately minted the knife coins and spade coins of Yan, Zhao, and Qi, leveraging its own resources to disrupt regional currency patterns, profiting from arbitrage to fill its national coffers. In diplomacy, it was a master of vertical and horizontal maneuvering. Within a patch of land no larger than a square inch, it danced among five states. It did not rely on territorial conquest but on the art of mediation and strategy to claim the title of king—the only case among the lesser states of the Warring States. This tribe’s temperament was strange and unrestrained, diametrically opposed to the hereditary nobility and Zhou ritual teachings. Both court and common folk reveled in music and dance. Surviving statues show men dressed as women dancing under the moonlight. Its customs were vastly different from those of the Central Plains—romantic, extravagant, and unbridled. And it was precisely this trait that sowed the seeds of its ruin. The entire state was addicted to sensual pleasures and entertainment. The court and bureaucracy indulged in hedonism. Fertile fields lay fallow, military preparedness slackened, and the arts of riding, hunting, and war gradually fell into neglect. Though strong, the state was inherently aggressive and reckless. It attacked in all directions, making enemies on every side. There were no long-term diplomatic balances—only forceful expansion and bullying. Strength was an instinct forged by desperation; edge was the armor of survival in the cracks. But endless militarism, enemies on all fronts—no matter how exquisite its crafts, how elite its army, how brilliant its diplomacy—could not last forever. When its national destiny was exhausted, the entire population of Zhongshan was forcibly relocated to the Chu region. A host of master artisans accompanied the migration, bringing top-tier techniques in smelting, gilding, and lacquerware into Chu, nourishing the cultural and artistic heritage of the south. A lone state, leaving only the lingering charm of its artifacts. The world first came to know Zhongshan. All they knew was the cold-hearted tale of the “Zhongshan wolf,” unaware that this tiny state hid a tragic and stirring saga of civilization’s rise and fall. Looking across history, through cycles of time, the logic of millennia has never changed. This Zhongshan state inevitably reminds one of today’s Middle Eastern “tough little country,” Israel. This lineage of people wandered and migrated for generations, displaced, returning to their ancient homeland after a thousand years of wandering. They took root in a land of constant war, surrounded by powerful enemies, just as Zhongshan was once trapped among the great powers of the Central Plains. Equally small in size, equally destroyed and revived multiple times. Equally masters of cutting-edge technology, backed by external resources. Equally fierce in combat, deeply versed in the game of power and strategy, rising forcefully in the cracks between great powers. Equally relying on wisdom, technology, force, and diplomacy to leverage the small against the large, flaunting their edge, carving out space for survival on all sides, rising through tenacity in desperate straits, and standing firm through top-tier strength. For a time, their glory knew no bounds, replicating the prosperity of Zhongshan. But in the end, they cannot escape the same destiny: arrogance born of power, an edge too sharp, enemies on every side, seeking security through conquest. Meeting counterbalance with aggression—since ancient times, all “tough little countries” in the cracks have shared the same fate. Fierce prowess can sustain a temporary rise, but recklessness leads to ruin. Skill may be refined, strategy may be mastered. But with no friends on any side, weariness without end. Even with a thousand years of resilience, one cannot escape the heavenly way that the height of prosperity must decline. Weakness is not the root of destruction—unbridled aggression is the final act of doom.
