Why can China achieve the unity of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, while the West cannot? The reason is actually very simple, and can be explained in one sentence. Western monotheistic religions are essentially organizations of power and wealth cloaked in religious garb, while China's Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism are fundamentally life solutions for how to live and find peace of mind. Monotheistic religions like Christianity and Islam in the West were never fundamentally designed to comfort or liberate people. They have strict hierarchies, mandated taxes, independent judiciaries, and religious authority that can stand equal to or even override royal power. The tithe, theocracy, religious courts, and persecution of heresy—every design is aimed at domination, control, wealth accumulation, and power expansion. What they seek is sole correctness, the final say, and absolute obedience from everyone. Such entities are inherently exclusive, incapable of merging with others—only a life-and-death struggle is possible. China's Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism were not immune to expansionism. Buddhism once hoarded land to avoid taxes and maintained monk armies, and Taoism also attempted theocratic models. But in China, imperial power always outweighed religious power. Any religion that tries to become a power bloc is directly suppressed. Thus, they had no choice but to take a different path—not seizing power, not governing the state, only solving human problems. Confucianism governs human relations: how to be a person, how to interact, how to build an orderly society. Taoism governs the relationship between humans and nature: how to follow natural laws, how to cultivate health, how to coexist with heaven and earth. Buddhism governs the relationship between humans and the mind: how to face birth, aging, illness, and death, how to transcend suffering, how to settle emotions. The three do not conflict, do not encroach on each other's territory, do not compete for power—they only help people live well in different aspects. A person can be Confucian in study, Taoist in health, and Buddhist in facing death—completely without contradiction. In the end, Western religions are tools of governance; Chinese religions are remedies for the soul. Carbon-based life has suffering, worries, birth, aging, illness, and death, so it needs something to soothe itself. Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism perfectly fill these gaps—not seizing power, not exploiting, only solving problems. This is why they can unite, coexist, and endure to this day.
