The Absence of the Subject: The Core Dilemma of Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus System In the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, Wittgenstein constructed a system of language and logic that attempted to draw boundaries for language and the world through rigorous logic. He asserted that the truth value of a proposition depends on its correspondence with facts, as if language were a perfect mirror reflecting the objective world. However, upon closer examination, we find that this seemingly orderly logical edifice is actually built on the sand of deliberately excluding the knowing subject. It overlooks the core role of humans as the creators of language and the perceivers of facts, ultimately leading to the dilemma that the mirror may be a distorted one. Differences in perception among different subjects and the context-dependence of language use make the one-to-one correspondence between language and facts an idealized illusion. I. The Foundation of the System: The Presupposed Direct Correspondence between Language and Facts The core framework of the Tractatus rests on a presupposition that is not fully justified: there exists a logical isomorphism between language and the world. The world consists of atomic facts (indivisible states of affairs, such as "this cup of water is on the table"), and language consists of elementary propositions (propositions corresponding to atomic facts). Propositions are combined through logical connectives, ultimately accurately mirroring the structure of facts. Wittgenstein regards this as the prerequisite for the validity of language, even asserting that the sum of all true propositions constitutes the entirety of natural science. This implies the existence of a universal logical language capable of covering all facts. Within this framework, language is endowed with the attribute of an objective tool. It does not depend on the user; it only needs to follow logical rules to automatically align with facts. It is like a mirror that is presupposed to be absolutely flat—whoever uses it will reflect the true face of facts. Wittgenstein seems to think that humans are irrelevant in this process; there is no need to consider how humans perceive facts or who determines whether language corresponds to facts, as if logic itself can complete all connections. II. The Core Crack: The Absence of the Knowing Subject and Differences in Perception The first crack in this logical edifice stems from the deliberate absence of the knowing subject. Although Wittgenstein acknowledges that the subject is not part of the world but rather its limit, he evades a key question: facts must be captured through the subject's perception, and language must be linked to facts through the subject's use. When we reintroduce the human into this system, we find that the correspondence between language and facts is far from being determined solely by logic. The most typical example is differences in perception. For a person with congenital blue-yellow color blindness, the red flower seen by an ordinary person is perceived as a blue flower in their cognition. Such a person would describe the fact before them by saying, "This flower is blue." In their perceptual system, this proposition fully corresponds to the facts and is logically self-consistent. But for an ordinary person, the true proposition corresponding to the fact is "This flower is red." Both propositions satisfy Wittgenstein's truth-value rules, yet they lead to completely opposite conclusions. At this point, whose correspondence between language and facts is true? Wittgenstein's system cannot answer this question. The objective fact he presupposes—such as the real color of the flower—must essentially be defined through the subject's visual system. Without human perception, color itself loses its meaning. It is as if he thought language was a flat mirror, but ignored that the visual systems of different subjects are themselves different lenses—some wear myopic glasses, some wear hyperopic glasses, and some wear tinted glasses—ultimately reflecting different facts. III. A Deeper Dilemma: Logical Self-Consistency Does Not Equal Correspondence with Facts The Paradox of the Lying Country The second dilemma in Wittgenstein's system is the confusion between logical self-consistency and correspondence with facts. He believes that as long as there is no contradiction among propositions and they can be derived from the truth-value combinations of elementary propositions, they are meaningful. However, he fails to realize that a logically self-consistent language system can be completely inverted relative to publicly recognized facts. We can imagine a "Lying Country" where people call daytime "night" and rain "sunshine," yet they communicate fluently within this language system. They would say, "It's night," when it is actually daytime, and "Let's sunbathe—sunshine," when it is actually raining and they need an umbrella. There are no logical contradictions among the propositions; it can even form a stable correspondence with their perceived facts. According to the standards of the Tractatus, the language of the Lying Country is meaningful. But according to public recognition, this language completely inverts the facts. The crux of the problem is that Wittgenstein's system has no place for public recognition or intersubjective consensus. He thought logic alone could serve as the sole criterion for determining correspondence with facts, but he overlooked that the essence of language is a tool for communication between subjects. Without perception and rules accepted by the majority, a logically self-consistent language may simply be solipsistic. It is like a precision machine whose internal gears fit perfectly and are logically self-consistent, but due to an assembly error in direction, it is inverted relative to public facts and can never function in real-world production scenarios. IV. Root Reflection: Theoretical Naivety and the Impossibility of Bypassing the Subject Wittgenstein's fundamental problem is that he attempted to bypass the troublesome subject and connect language and the world directly through logic. He thought he could find an objective path that does not require the subject's involvement, but he failed to realize that the subject is precisely the only bridge connecting language and the world. The same glass of water is a tool for quenching thirst to a thirsty person, a substance at 25 degrees Celsius to a physicist, and a transparent toy to a child. Different subjects focus on different facts, and the corresponding linguistic descriptions also differ, yet none of them can represent the sole fact of the water. The same sentence, "This dish is very spicy," means slightly spicy to a Sichuanese person but extremely spicy to a Cantonese person. The meaning of language depends on the subject's experience, not on an absolute logical standard. The universal language system Wittgenstein wanted to construct requires a fact template accepted by everyone. But the differences among knowing subjects mean this template never existed from the start. By excluding the subject from the system, he effectively removed the foundation when building a house. No matter how orderly this logical system appears, it lacks support and ultimately remains a castle built on sand. V. The Later Turn: Wittgenstein's Correction of His Own Dilemma It is worth noting that in his later work *Philosophical Investigations*, Wittgenstein overturned his early theoretical framework. He finally realized that language is not a mirror reflecting facts, but a game people play in communication and daily life. The color language of a color-blind person and an ordinary person is not about who is right or wrong, but about different perceptual games. The true-or-false language of the Lying Country and the Normal Country is not about which conforms to facts and which does not, but about different rules of communication. The meaning of language no longer depends on correspondence with facts, but on the context of use and intersubjective consensus. This turn is essentially a self-correction of the dilemma caused by the absence of the subject. He finally acknowledged that language cannot exist independently of humans, and logic cannot replace the subject's perception and communication. Conclusion: Revelations from the Cracks—Language Can Never Be Separated from Humans The value of the *Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus* lies not only in its construction of a rigorous logical system, but also in the dilemmas it exposes. Any theory that attempts to bypass the subject in connecting language and the world is bound to be untenable. Wittgenstein's early naivety precisely reminds us that language has never been an objective mirror, but a human mirror. It reflects not only the appearance of the world, but also the way humans perceive the world and reach consensus through communication. Although this logical castle built on sand is unstable, it leaves us with an important revelation: when discussing the relationship between language and the world, we must never forget the central role of humans. After all, language is a human creation, facts are human perceptions, and logic is a human tool.
