The myth of the internet: In ancient Greek mythology, the gods held the power of life and death over human fortune, able to arbitrarily control mortal destinies, yet they were utterly dependent on the worship and offerings of mortals to sustain their divine power. Internet platform giants are like the gods of the modern world, wielding the power over traffic and the authority to promote or ban ordinary users at will. All supreme power on the platforms is essentially entirely dependent on the traffic, activity, and sustenance of billions of users. Ancient Greek mythology constructed a deeply fatalistic paradox of power. The Olympian gods appeared transcendent, with boundless power, controlling the laws of heaven and earth and the fortunes of humanity, looking down from above. But they were not omnipotent or independent; the prayers, sacrifices, and faith of mortals were the sole source of the gods' power. Without human belief, the gods lost their authority and faded into nothingness. The powerful dominate the weak, yet must parasitically rely on the sustenance of the weak. This contradictory symbiotic relationship is the core underlying logic of the mythological system. This ancient, unchanging rule has been fully replicated in today's internet era. Major online platforms hold absolute dominion over the virtual world, possessing absolute discourse power, traffic allocation rights, and account management authority.
