Thoughts from a Vacuum Cleaner I recently got a small lithium-powered vacuum cleaner—compact and very handy to use. Every time I finish cleaning and look at the dust bin filled with dust and debris, I know clearly that this device has genuinely collected the dirt, making me realize how much invisible grime hides in our daily living spaces. This reminded me of another vacuum cleaner I bought before. That one was stylish, more expensive, and packed with features. It had built-in LED lights and ran with extremely low noise. Judging by its appearance and user experience, everything seemed satisfactory. But after long-term use, I gradually noticed that its dust bin was always clean, rarely needing to be emptied. At first, I didn’t think much of it. Until one day after cleaning, I bent down to check the floor and found that gaps and corners still had plenty of particles left. It turned out that this seemingly excellent vacuum cleaner wasn’t actually sucking the dirt into the bin—it was just blowing the debris aside with airflow. The so-called cleaning was merely creating an illusion of surface tidiness. Comparing these two items made me realize a truth. Judging whether a vacuum cleaner is good never depends on how refined it looks or how fancy its extra features are. The most practical standard is how much garbage ends up in the dust bin. Results don’t lie. Fancy appearances are secondary. Whether it truly solves the problem—the outcome speaks for itself. This principle applies equally to daily work. Street sanitation is the most straightforward example. Here, our sanitation workers still use brooms, dustpans, and garbage trucks. When sweeping roads, they gather scattered trash bit by bit, bag it, and transport it away. In everyone’s understanding, thoroughly collecting and removing garbage to restore public areas to cleanliness is the completion of their job. The final cleanup result is the core measure of their work. In contrast, sanitation practices in many parts of Europe and America are completely different. Local cleaners mostly use leaf blowers. They don’t use collection tools—just blow leaves, dust, and debris on the road into the grass or corners on both sides. As long as the main road looks clean, the job is considered done. The total amount of garbage hasn’t decreased at all; it’s just been moved from the visible road to places people don’t see. In essence, this is only superficial cleaning. Two completely different logics of work. Extending this to social governance, a stark contrast emerges in the fight against corruption. In recent years, China has steadily advanced anti-corruption efforts, investigating and punishing a large number of officials who violated laws or discipline. Among them are high-ranking cadres. Once corruption is proven, they are legally investigated, put on trial, and sentenced—the entire process is open and transparent. We never shy away from existing problems, nor do we deliberately create an illusion of zero corruption. Like the practical vacuum cleaner and the sanitation workers who actually collect garbage, we face problems directly, remove the root cause, and let the actual results of investigation and punishment speak. On the other hand, many European and American countries have long proclaimed zero tolerance for corruption and boasted of social integrity, yet in reality, high-level officials are rarely investigated or sent to court for corruption. Whenever a corruption scandal is exposed, the involved officials mostly just resign to take responsibility, and the storm fades away. Moreover, through institutional adjustments, these countries have legalized disguised forms of money-for-power transactions such as political donations and lobbying. Under this system, corruption is like garbage blown away by a leaf blower—once it disappears from public view, the problem is considered nonexistent. No one is held accountable or sentenced, which is interpreted as the absence of corruption. By covering up and shifting, they create a facade of clean governance. Digging deeper, this is essentially a contest between two evaluation systems. One is result-oriented: face the problem, eradicate it, and do solid work. The other focuses on appearances: avoid the root cause, shift contradictions, and prioritize performance. A small vacuum cleaner reflects profound truths about how we handle tasks, conduct work, and even govern. Surface glamour and gaudy forms can never withstand scrutiny. No matter what we do, we should not be misled by appearances. Only by keeping an eye on the final outcome and tackling the fundamental problems with down-to-earth efforts can we achieve lasting success.
