Recent discussions comparing ByteDance and Meta’s business models, as well as the differences in live streaming ecosystems between China and the US, have given us a clearer understanding of the underlying logic of the global internet industry. These insights are not a collection of scattered opinions but a progressive layering from technical infrastructure to business ecosystems and cultural needs, revealing the essential differences in internet development paths across different markets. **1. The inevitable monetization of redundant cloud infrastructure by giant internet companies** Whether it’s Amazon, Alibaba, or ByteDance, the birth of their cloud computing businesses stems from the same core logic: the redundant infrastructure reserved to handle traffic peaks is essentially a waste of resources, and only by external monetization can costs be amortized. Amazon originally had to reserve computing, storage, and bandwidth resources far exceeding daily needs to support peak traffic on its e-commerce platform. The high cost of idle resources became a huge burden. Thus, it packaged its mature internal infrastructure into AWS cloud computing services, eventually seeing cloud revenue surpass that of its e-commerce business. This logic is universal among global internet giants. Alibaba built Alibaba Cloud relying on e-commerce and payment traffic; Meta built its cloud infrastructure based on its social ecosystem. ByteDance, leveraging the global short-video traffic of Douyin and TikTok, developed Volc Engine to support extreme real-time interaction. Social media and live streaming: The core difference between China and the US stems from ecological adaptation** In the field of social media and live streaming, the differences between the Chinese and US markets are not simply a matter of different development stages but result from the combined effects of infrastructure, business, and culture. **(1) User scale and strength comparison: Meta holds steady, ByteDance catches up fast** In terms of core indicators, Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) still tops the global social media user scale with 3.98 billion monthly active users (MAUs). Facebook alone has 3.07 billion MAUs. ByteDance’s Douyin plus TikTok has about 1.9 billion MAUs, roughly half of Meta’s user base. However, in revenue growth and user time spent, ByteDance has overtaken Meta. In 2025, ByteDance’s revenue is estimated at $190–200 billion, with profits of $48–50 billion, growing over 40%, far exceeding Meta’s 15–20%. Live streaming precisely solves this pain point by providing real-time demonstrations, parameter explanations, and product education, while using a low-threshold trial model to help small manufacturers quickly open up markets. This supply-creates-demand model makes live streaming an indispensable part of China’s business ecosystem. In contrast, the US commercial infrastructure is already mature, forming a demand-matches-supply logic. Giants like Amazon, Walmart, and Costco select high-quality, mature products through large-scale procurement, eliminating many niche, non-standard items. US users trust big brands more and have low acceptance of influencer-driven sales. Moreover, traffic and labor costs are high, making it difficult for the marginal revenue of live-stream hosts to cover marginal costs. Additionally, video social needs in the US are segmented: Zoom and Google Meet for work, FaceTime and WhatsApp for family and friends. The tool and entertainment attributes are completely separated, so there is no need to tie video interaction to commercial live-stream sales as in China. **(3) Meta’s short video and live streaming: similar in form but different in essence** Meta does have a product that rivals TikTok: Instagram Reels is its core deployment.
