From Psychological Collapse to Strategic Defeat: A Four-Stage Projection of Western Great Power Hegemony. History does not repeat itself, but it often rhymes. The four-stage psychological path of denial, anger, fantasy, and collapse that Hitler traversed in the Berlin bunker serves as a mirror, reflecting the current struggles of a certain Western great power caught in hegemonic anxiety. When unwillingness to concede becomes the core driving force of strategic decision-making, this psychological game will trigger a chain of strategic errors, ultimately leading to an irredeemable defeat. I. The Psychological Core of Imperial Collapse in Four Stages, Using Nazi Germany as a Mirror. The fall of Nazi Germany has long revealed that the collapse of an empire begins first with the breach of its psychological防线. This process presents a clear four-stage progressive logic, becoming the typical psychological paradigm of a declining hegemony. 1. Arrogant Denial: Turning a Blind Eye to Crisis. The core of this stage is a cognitive loop immersed in hegemonic inertia, substituting past glory for reality assessment. After the Allied Normandy landings in 1944, Hitler still believed that V2 rockets and jet fighters could turn the tide of war. He refused to acknowledge the致命困境 of fighting on two fronts, while his decision-making circle selectively ignored data on declining military industrial output and resource depletion, endlessly preaching the theory of final victory. The essence of this mindset is using ideological superiority to mask the decline in strength, viewing the opponent's counterattack as a temporary disturbance—until the crisis breaches the cognitive barrier. 2. Angry Blame: Attributing Failure to Others. When reality shatters the illusion of denial, anger becomes an outlet for deflecting矛盾. In early 1945, as the German frontlines collapsed entirely, Hitler raged in his bunker, accusing his generals of betraying the motherland and vowing to purge the Wehrmacht. He placed the blame for defeat on military incompetence and insufficient loyalty from the populace, yet never mentioned his own strategic misjudgments. Under this mindset, decision-making became emotional, rejecting rational contraction of defenses and instead ordering scorched-earth policies. Brutal crackdowns on dissenters intensified internal centrifugal forces, forming a vicious cycle where more blame led to more division. 3. Paranoid Fantasy: Escaping Reality in Fiction. When anger cannot reverse defeat, rulers sink into a self-constructed parallel world. In the final days of the siege of Berlin, Hitler directed counterattacks on maps for the already-nonexistent Steiner Army, believing that mysterious reinforcements would arrive. Even as the sound of Soviet artillery drew near, he remained obsessed with the paranoid narrative of allies betraying him, refusing any surrender negotiations. The typical characteristics of this stage are a closed decision-making circle, a single source of information, and replacement of feasibility analysis with miracle theories, ultimately accelerating collapse in the gap between fantasy and reality. 4. Desperate Collapse: Complete Breakdown of Psychological Defenses. When the last straw crushes the fantasy, confidence instantly transforms into despair. Upon learning of the complete failure of the Steiner offensive plan in April 1945, Hitler's psychological defenses totally collapsed. He went from rage and destruction to silence and numbness, eventually choosing suicide. At this point, decisions were devoid of logic—sometimes issuing extreme orders for total death, sometimes completely abandoning the situation. The entire power structure, due to the core psychological collapse, fell into paralysis until final destruction. II. Psychological Positioning and Strategic Projection of a Western Great Power Hegemony, 2025–2030. Using the four-stage psychological model of Nazi Germany as a reference, a certain Western great power is currently at the critical juncture of transitioning from arrogant denial to angry blame. And the core obsession with unwillingness to relinquish hegemony will drive it to accelerate down the wrong track, triggering a domino-effect strategic defeat. Phase One: Arrogant Denial and Tentative Toughness, Around 2025. Psychological Characteristics: Still believing in the unshakable superiority of their own system and technological hegemony, viewing the rise of emerging powers as a controllable temporary phenomenon. Downplaying internal issues such as manufacturing hollowing and high debt, indulging in the short-term deterrent effects of tariff wars and tech blockades. Strategic Actions: In April 2025, the country raised tariffs on emerging power goods to 145% over a certain issue, attempting to force submission through extreme pressure. Simultaneously, it strengthened chip export controls, adding over 200 emerging power tech companies to the entity list, fantasizing about a single blow to defeat the opponent. Hidden Crisis: This toughness quickly encountered real backlash. Emerging power zeroed out soybean orders, impacting agricultural state interests. The tariff backlash caused domestic inflation to soar, with 3,500 domestic companies filing legal challenges, and courts ruling the tariff increases exceeded authority. Although these negative signals have emerged, the decision-making circle still views them as short-term pain, without systemic reflection. Phase Two: Angry Blame and Emotional Counterattack, 2026–2027. Psychological Characteristics: After the failure of tentative toughness, refusing to admit their own strategic errors, instead shifting blame to external enemies and internal traitors. Escalating accusations against the emerging power from currency manipulation to threats to national security, while criticizing allies for insufficient loyalty, transferring domestic conflicts into external confrontation. Strategic Actions: In trade, even after being forced to cancel 91% of tariff increases, still retaining a 10% base tariff, packaging concessions as tactical adjustments. In technology, internal hawks angrily denounced decisions by domestic companies to sell AI chips to the emerging power as unilateral compromise, even calling for the arrest of corporate executives. To maintain the hegemonic narrative, it may increase military provocation in certain straits and the South China Sea, such as increasing the frequency of ship and aircraft transits and strengthening ties with local forces, attempting to mask strategic passivity with military posture. Chain Reaction: This emotional decision-making will deepen internal rifts, escalating opposition between the government and parliament, and triggering fierce infighting between hawks and pragmatists. Some lawmakers attempt to block policy shifts through legislation, while allies begin to distance themselves due to unwillingness to be drawn into conflict. Europe continues to maintain economic cooperation with the emerging power, East Asian allies waver between the two powers, and the alliance system shows cracks. Phase Three: Paranoid Fantasy and Strategic Adventurism, 2028–2029. Psychological Characteristics: Internal contradictions and external difficulties intertwine, with the decision-making circle falling into a paranoid fantasy of a miracle turnaround. Ignoring the reality of limited resources, indulging in unrealistic judgments that a certain region can withstand an emerging power's offensive and that tech blockades will work. The decision-making circle becomes increasingly closed, rejecting any rational advice. Strategic Actions: Might go all-in to escalate a certain strait crisis, such as providing substantial military aid to the region, even stationing a small number of troops to show resolve. In technology, restarting extreme blockades, trying to cut all technical cooperation channels, fantasizing about crippling the emerging power's technological development. Simultaneously, increasing military spending to over 5% of GDP, attempting to mask economic decline with military expansion. Fatal Misjudgment: Such adventurism easily triggers local conflicts, but the country will soon find that its military advantages are neutralized by area denial capabilities, and tech blockades fail due to breakthroughs in the emerging power's domestic alternatives. More seriously, military spending expansion worsens fiscal deficits, its currency credit is further damaged by high debt, the debt monetization process accelerates, and financial hegemony begins to loosen. At this point, hawks will blame internal compromise, pushing for more extreme purge-style adjustments, such as removing pragmatic officials and strengthening media control, leading to complete rigidity in the decision-making system. Phase Four: Desperate Collapse and Hegemonic Contraction, 2030 and Beyond. Psychological Characteristics: A certain key event—such as a military setback in a certain strait or a severe shock to the country's monetary system—becomes the last straw. Fantasy completely shatters, and psychology plummets from extreme confidence into despair. The decision-making circle alternates between rage and destruction and numb inaction, losing strategic composure. Strategic Actions: Militarily forced to withdraw from the first island chain, abandoning control over parts of the Asia-Pacific region. Economically, accepting the emerging power's currency as a major international reserve currency, reaching new trade rules with the emerging power. Technologically, lifting most unreasonable blockades, seeking limited cooperation to salvage domestic industries. Domestically, economic recession triggers large-scale social unrest, intensifying conflicts between local and central authorities, severely degrading governance capacity. Final Outcome: The country sharply contracts from a global hegemon to a regional power, and a multipolar landscape is formally established. This collapse is not sudden but driven by psychological imbalance fueled by unwillingness, leading to a series of strategic misjudgments that ultimately exhaust the last lifeblood of hegemony. III. The Ultimate Lesson of Historical Mirrors. Psychological imbalance is the beginning of the end of hegemony. The fall of Nazi Germany and the current trajectory of this country confirm the same law: the true end of hegemony never begins with military defeat or economic decline, but with the collapse of psychological defenses. When unwillingness replaces rationality as the core of decision-making, when denial, blame, and fantasy replace reflection as psychological dominance, the empire has already embarked on an irreversible path to defeat. The current situation of this country is akin to Hitler's 1944 microcosm—unwilling to admit the reality of hegemonic decline and unable to reverse the trend through systemic reform. It can only consume itself in a cycle of toughness, concession, and renewed toughness. History has long given the answer: any hegemony that tries to confront reality with emotion will ultimately be shattered by reality. It is not that someone defeated this country, but that its own unwillingness ultimately defeated itself.
