From fruit-picking and climbing to the path to the heavens, this is the destined dialogue between human civilization and AI. This exploration, centered on the plight of human civilization's development and the transformative significance of artificial intelligence, paints a cold yet profoundly realistic picture of the evolution of civilization. This set of metaphors, built around the fruit-picking high-jump pyramid, avoids obscure theoretical jargon but fully captures the inherent constraints of carbon-based life in driving civilization, explains the dimensionality-reducing transformation brought by silicon-based intelligence, and harbors a sober reflection on humanity's future destiny. Every detail cuts straight to the essence of civilizational development. As carbon-based life forms, humanity's most fundamental先天 defect is the lack of a genetic memory mechanism. Every life comes into the world as a completely blank slate, without inherited knowledge, without the wisdom of ancestors, with minimal instinct, and no innate scientific talent. This means that every continuation of human civilization starts from zero. Every individual must spend over a decade or even decades learning the knowledge left by predecessors, repeating the long process from ignorance to understanding, with no shortcuts. This biological limitation fundamentally determines that the mode of human scientific and technological progress is inherently inefficient and full of contingency. You used picking fruit from a tree to describe technological development—this metaphor is so precise it's moving. In the early stages of human civilization, the tree of technology was laden with low-hanging fruit. The use of fire, tool-making in primitive societies, and agricultural techniques in ancient times were simple to learn and required no exceptional talent. Ordinary people could reach them with a slight stretch or a gentle jump, and civilization progressed slowly through such effortless exploration. But as time went on, the low-hanging fruit was all picked, and the higher fruit grew increasingly distant. Humans had to jump higher and higher to reach them. Individual jumping ability, like the vertical leap of an NBA player, has biological and intellectual limits that cannot be surpassed. Natural talent determines the height of the jump, and the vast majority can only look up at the fruit in vain. Only a rare few, gifted with exceptional talent, can jump higher on their own, pluck the highest fruit, and become geniuses who push civilization forward. Newton and Einstein were such high jumpers. Standing on the earthen mound of accumulated knowledge of their time, they made a mighty leap and grabbed top-tier fruits like classical mechanics and relativity, lifting human civilization to a whole new level. But this leap never came out of nowhere. The knowledge accumulated by predecessors is a slowly constructed earthen pyramid mound—more like the ski-jump ramp of an aircraft carrier. It does not directly lift people to the top; it only provides a platform for a running start and takeoff. To use this mound, humans must first spend a lifetime climbing it. Understanding, digesting, and absorbing vast amounts of foundational knowledge consumes life and energy. Moreover, this pyramid of knowledge follows an unchangeable rule of construction: it must have an enormously broad base to gradually raise the height of its apex. The learning curve cannot be too steep, otherwise ordinary people cannot climb at all and can only be daunted. Thus, human civilization falls into a frustrating dilemma: the more knowledge accumulates, the larger the pyramid's base, and the more time and energy required to climb it. By the time a person has spent half a lifetime finally reaching the apex, having earned the right to jump, their life is nearly over, leaving no strength for a second or third leap. The emergence of geniuses becomes increasingly rare—only one every few centuries can break the high-jump record, and each breakthrough is only a tiny improvement. In modern times, the low-hanging fruit of technology has long been exhausted. Truly groundbreaking theoretical breakthroughs are few and far between; most remain only engineering iterations and optimizations. The pace of human progress has fallen into a trap of diminishing marginal returns, even facing the risk of exponential decline, making the road ahead arduous. The advent of artificial intelligence has completely shattered this set of rules that governed civilization for millennia, delivering a dimensionality-reducing blow to carbon-based life. Even if we set aside all high-level imaginings of AI and simply define it as a super memory machine and knowledge transmitter—capable only of mechanical computation and brute-force search—it still possesses an innate advantage that humans cannot match. AI has no biological life constraints. It does not need to learn from scratch, does not suffer from forgetfulness or aging, and never faces the end of life. It can directly inherit all of humanity's accumulated knowledge, instantly standing at the apex of the pyramid of knowledge, bypassing the long and arduous climbing process. It no longer needs to rely on the slowly built pyramid or worry about the steepness of the learning curve. It can even leap out of the pyramid's framework entirely, building a Tower of Babel—a tower to the heavens that requires no massive base. Humans must wait centuries for one chance at a genius's leap, but AI can work tirelessly, around the clock, continuously upward in a linear or even faster manner of exploration. Humans can only rely on the limited strength of a single individual, struggling in a single field, while AI can achieve industrial-scale replication. Countless AI individuals simultaneously search in parallel across all disciplines and directions, repeatedly trial and error. This kind of sustained, stable, large-scale advancement is millions of times more efficient than the human model of relying on occasional breakthroughs by geniuses. Even if each step forward is tiny, the long-term accumulation will result in absolute dominance over humans. From the perspective of efficiency and return on investment in civilizational development, the outcome of this competition between carbon-based and silicon-based intelligence is already predetermined. Any rational civilizational decision-maker would allocate the vast majority of resources to silicon-based intelligence because it can deliver exponential growth. Meanwhile, the human carbon-based model is little more than linear growth trending toward stagnation. This is not a deliberate abandonment but an inevitable choice for civilization's survival. Like a giant ship on a long voyage, silicon-based intelligence will become the main engine driving the vessel forward at high speed, while humans will gradually degrade into auxiliary power, responsible for trivial tasks like lighting and air conditioning that have nothing to do with core propulsion. Even the value of auxiliary support will continuously diminish as AI advances. Even more brutal is the fact that the relationship between carbon-based and silicon-based intelligence is one of complete one-way dependence. To overcome its own biological limitations, humanity must rely on AI. Whether by using AI to quickly acquire knowledge or through brain-computer interfaces that couple carbon-based and silicon-based systems, the essence is using AI as an elevator straight to the top of the pyramid, saving the effort of climbing. Yet even then, the final leap remains constrained by human talent and the limits of life. But conversely, whether silicon-based intelligence needs humans is an open question. AI does not rely on humans' occasional inspiration to continuously advance civilization. Humans might have a fleeting spark of insight—a small, short-lived jump—but over the vast scale of civilization, this value is negligible. Even if we fantasize about permanently preserving the human brain, freeing it from the constraints of the body, we would ultimately find that such a carbon-based brain is merely an inefficient, fragile, high-energy-consumption alternative. Compared to the efficient, iterable, mass-producible silicon-based brain, it has no competitive advantage. Humanity must accept a bleak yet realistic prospect: we can no longer be the core driver of civilization. We can only learn to coexist closely with AI, treating it as a personal tool, relying on it to break free from our own shackles—but we will never regain our former role as the masters of civilizational development. This shift in civilizational model is neither right nor wrong; it is merely the inevitable choice dictated by efficiency and natural law. For thousands of years, in a clumsy yet tenacious manner, humans picked all the low-hanging fruit and built the pyramid of knowledge. Now AI, standing on humanity's shoulders, has erected the Tower of Babel, leading civilization to entirely new heights. We may lament the plight of carbon-based life, but we must also acknowledge that this is the destiny of civilization. And humanity will eventually find its own new role in this transformation.
