From the "person in the song" to AI generalization: a deep dialogue between human memory mechanisms and the evolution of large models. I. Core Starting Point: The Essence of Generalization Association Behind "Person in the Song" Our discussion begins with the highly resonant lyrics "At first hearing, I didn't understand the meaning of the song; upon hearing it again, I have become the person in the song." These lines precisely depict a unique cognitive ability of humans: generalization association. This ability is not simple memory retrieval; it is a cross-domain synesthetic experience that connects seemingly unrelated experiences and emotions. When hearing a familiar melody again, the brain is no longer limited to the melody itself or the details of the lyrics. Instead, it automatically associates with one's own life experiences accumulated over the years, extending from listening to the song to reflecting on life, completing a cross-domain resonance from music appreciation to life experience. After deeper exploration, we propose a core hypothesis: this generalization association is not an advanced skill deliberately evolved by humans; rather, it may be a byproduct of the memory storage mechanism, even a seemingly imperfect trait. Throughout millions of years of human evolution, this mechanism—which might have been considered a flaw—unexpectedly became the cornerstone of abstract thinking and innovative ability. It allows humans to break free from the constraints of a single scenario, deducing logic from one domain to another, which is the essence of "understanding by analogy." Comparing this ability with current large models, the gap is evident. The generalization of large models is always limited to linear extensions within the training data. For example, when inputting "At first hearing, I didn't understand the meaning of the song," the model can only retrieve related lyrics, music reviews, or user reflections from the training data, always revolving around musical insights. It cannot, like humans, actively associate with completely unrelated personal experiences such as family relationships or workplace situations. The core divergence lies in that humans can extract the essence from specific scenarios—such as the regretful emotion of contrasting past and present—and then freely match it to any scenario. In contrast, large models can only rely on statistical associations in the data, making limited extensions within similar scenarios, lacking the ability to actively extract essence and perform cross-domain transfer. II. Core Logic of Human Generalization Association: Essence Extraction and Cross-Domain Transfer 1. Essence Extraction: A Typical Case of Human Generalization Human generalization association always follows the logic of first extracting the essence and then transferring it across domains. This thought pattern pervades all aspects of life, learning, and work, producing numerous seemingly leapfrog but precise associations. The first typical case is the transfer from emotional resonance in "person in the song" to family experience. When we hear a certain song in our youth, we can only understand the surface melody and lyrics but cannot grasp the deep emotions of regret, longing, etc., embedded in it. As we grow older, experiencing separation from parents, later understanding, and other life stories, when we hear the song again, the brain automatically extracts the core emotional essence of "not understanding at the time, later empathizing" and binds it to family experiences, completing an association between two unrelated domains: music and family. This transfer does not rely on any direct associative clues; it is purely a precise capture and reuse of emotional essence. The second case is the cross-domain application from physical phenomena to interpersonal management. When observing the physical phenomenon that water boils when excessively pressurized, humans do not stop at the specific knowledge of the relationship between pressure and boiling point. Instead, they extract the core logic that "excessive constraint triggers an explosion." Transferring this essence to the workplace management scenario forms the management insight: "Do not overly control subordinates, otherwise it will provoke resistance." From physical phenomena to interpersonal management, the domains are completely different, and what supports this transfer is the ability to refine core logic. The third case is the extension from competitive tactics to business decisions. When learning chess, we master the tactic of "sacrificing pawns to protect the king," whose core logic is sacrificing partial interests for overall victory. When facing business operation decisions, the brain automatically awakens this core logic and transfers it to the commercial scenario, forming the business strategy of "abandoning low-profit businesses and focusing on core tracks." The key here is not that chess and business are directly related, but that both share the essential logic of trade-offs and overall benefit. The human brain can precisely recognize and reuse this essence. 2. Core Gap with Large Models' Data-Association Generalization The core gap between human generalization and large model generalization is concentrated in three key dimensions: logical starting point, scope of association, and triggering method. From the logical starting point, human generalization centers on essence extraction. No matter the scenario, the brain first strips away surface details, captures the core logic, emotion, or pattern, and then uses this essence as an anchor to find adaptability in different scenarios. In contrast, the generalization of large models is based on data statistical associations. They do not actively extract essence but rely on the co-occurrence probability of words, scenes, and contexts in the training data. For example, if "chess" and "sacrificing pawns" frequently co-occur in the training data, the model builds an association between them, but it cannot understand the deep logic of "sacrificing part for overall gain." From the scope of association, human generalization can break through scenario boundaries. As long as the core essence is consistent, no matter how unrelated the two domains—like music and family, physics and management—cross-domain transfer can be achieved. However, large model generalization is always limited to the scenarios covered by the training data. For example, inputting "water boils when excessively pressurized," the model can output related physical principles or a few existing associations between pressure and emotions in the training data, but it cannot autonomously transfer to workplace management—a scenario not directly trained—unless a large number of direct association texts between physical phenomena and management exist in the data. From the triggering method, human generalization is active association, requiring no external guidance. When encountering a new scenario, the brain automatically retrieves past experiences with similar essence from the memory store and completes spontaneous transfer. In contrast, large model generalization is passive matching. Only when the input scenario has high similarity to the training data scenario or clear associative clues can the model output relevant results. It cannot initiate cross-domain associations actively like humans.
