IV. The Underlying Logic of Memory Master Methods: Proactively Utilizing Memory Mechanisms The various efficient memory methods advocated by memory masters are not created out of thin air but precisely leverage the core principles of the human memory mechanism. By proactively designing memory scenarios, strengthening memory associations, and maximizing the advantages of neural chunk storage and multi-synaptic redundant encoding, they enhance memory retention and retrieval efficiency. The first core method is multi-sensory associative memory. The core logic of this method is to activate multiple sensory inputs, proactively creating multimodal redundant storage pathways. Taking the English word "banana" as an example, a memory master would not have the learner mechanically repeat the spelling but instead guide them to simultaneously associate multiple sensory dimensions. Visually, imagine the yellow crescent shape of a banana. Auditorily, repeatedly listen to and imitate the pronunciation: "Banana." Tactilely, recall the smooth texture of a banana. Motorically, trace the spelling strokes with hand movements. These multi-sensory inputs simultaneously activate the brain's visual, auditory, tactile, and motor cortices, forming multi-pathway redundant storage—much like saving a file simultaneously as an image, audio, text, and handwriting trace. Each pathway carries a unique label, and strong synaptic connections form between pathways. The advantage of this storage method is that any sensory cue can trigger the complete memory. Seeing the shape of a banana reminds one of the spelling; hearing the pronunciation brings to mind the meaning. This significantly reduces the probability of forgetting, making it far more efficient than mere mechanical memorization. The second method is the story chaining method, whose underlying logic is to utilize the scenario-binding feature of neural chunks, allowing isolated memories to share indexes and reduce retrieval costs. For a series of isolated memory elements, such as the words "banana," "basket," "bear," and "bread," a memory master would embed them into a complete scenario story: A little bear, Bear, carries a basket, Basket, walks into a forest, finds a bunch of bananas, Banana, and after eating them, finds a piece of bread, Bread. The core function of this story is to create a neural chunk for the forest foraging scenario, packaging all the originally isolated words into this chunk, sharing the core index "forest foraging." When memory retrieval is needed, activating the "forest foraging" index triggers all words within the chunk, avoiding the problem of individual memory storage and difficult retrieval. Moreover, the emotions embedded in the story—such as the bear's joy at finding food or anticipation of the banana—further strengthen synaptic connections, making memories more robust. Emotional stimuli promote the release of memory-enhancing neurotransmitters like dopamine and acetylcholine, enhancing memory consolidation. The third method is pictorial encoding, which focuses on converting abstract memory content into concrete images. By leveraging the high neuron density and strong associative properties of the visual cortex, it establishes robust memory pathways. For an abstract word like "ambition," mechanically memorizing its spelling and meaning is hard to retain long-term. A memory master would guide the learner to convert it into a concrete image: a person standing on a towering mountain peak, holding a flag, with rolling clouds behind. This image concretizes the abstract meaning of "ambition," activating the brain's visual imagery system. The number of neurons in the visual cortex is several times that in the language area. Concrete images trigger broader neuronal activation, forming deeper memory traces. This transformation essentially adds a visual redundant pathway to an abstract memory. Originally, only a weak connection existed in the language area; now, a strong connection is added in the visual area, greatly enhancing resistance to forgetting. At the same time, each individual's constructed image has personalized features, such as the shape of the mountain peak or the color of the flag. This personalized encoding further strengthens the uniqueness of the memory, making retrieval more distinctive. The common underlying logic of these three methods is to proactively align with the brain's memory mechanism: either by increasing redundant memory pathways through multi-sensory input, strengthening intra-chunk associations through scenario stories, or activating more efficient memory brain areas through pictorial transformation. They do not violate the brain's storage rules; instead, through deliberate design, they make the memory process more consistent with the core characteristics of neural chunk storage and multi-synaptic redundant encoding. This achieves efficient memory effects, indirectly confirming the reasonableness of our hypotheses about the human memory mechanism. V. Core Insights for the Evolution of AI Large Models I. Current Shortcomings of Large Models Compared to Human Memory Mechanisms Current large models still exhibit significant shortcomings in key dimensions such as generalization ability, memory integration, and multimodal fusion. The root cause of these shortcomings lies in the fundamental differences between their underlying design and the data storage, association, and retrieval logic of human memory. The first core shortcoming is the post-hoc splicing nature of multimodal training. The current multimodal capabilities of large models—such as coordinated processing of text, images, and audio—are essentially achieved by training different modality models separately and then splicing them through interfaces. The text model handles language understanding, the image model handles visual recognition, and the two establish simple associations through data mapping, rather than achieving native binding encoding like humans. When humans learn "banana," multi-sensory signals—visual shape, auditory pronunciation, motor spelling—are input simultaneously, forming strong association pathways in one go. Seeing the shape of a banana automatically activates pronunciation and spelling. In contrast, when a large model sees an image of a banana, it must first identify it as a banana through the image module, then call the text module to generate the corresponding English word and pronunciation. This is a step-by-step passive linkage, lacking cross-modal native strong binding. The second shortcoming is the lack of an offline consolidation mechanism. Large models do not have a neural replay process similar to human sleep, so they cannot structurally optimize newly received data during non-reasoning periods. Fragments of memories humans receive during the day undergo detail stripping, essence extraction, and association with old knowledge during sleep, ultimately forming structured neural chunks. In contrast, new data for large models is either directly used for online fine-tuning—which easily leads to overfitting—or simply stored in external databases for retrieval via RAG technology. They lack deep integration and essence extraction of new and old knowledge, causing newly learned knowledge to be disconnected from the existing knowledge system, making it difficult to form generalizable core logic. The third shortcoming is the absence of chunk-level archiving logic in storage. Knowledge associations in large models rely on statistical co-occurrence probabilities in training data, rather than physical scenario-based chunk storage. Humans pack all memories related to forest foraging into the same neural chunk; activating the scenario index awakens all associated memories. For a large model, the association among "banana," "basket," and "bear" merely stems from their co-occurrence frequency in training data. If there is no direct association in the data, it cannot autonomously form scenario-based associations, let alone achieve cross-domain generalization. The fragility of such statistical associations leads to a fragmented knowledge system in large models, unable to form stable cognitive frameworks like humans. The fourth shortcoming is the lack of true continuous learning ability. Large models cannot dynamically integrate new memories with old memories—like humans who "examine themselves three times a day"—to iteratively optimize knowledge. Continuous learning in humans is a process where new memories merge into the old knowledge system. New experiences, through neural replay during sleep, establish associations with old memories and optimize the cognitive framework. In contrast, continuous learning in large models is achieved through incremental fine-tuning, which not only easily overwrites old knowledge—causing catastrophic forgetting—but also cannot autonomously optimize the storage structure of knowledge. As a result, the larger the model scale, the more chaotic the knowledge system, and the more limited the improvement in generalization capability.
