Have you ever thought that negative numbers can also have logarithms, or even imaginary numbers? What insights does this fantastical image offer you? From the extension of factorials to semantic vectors, mathematics abstraction resonates at a fundamental level with artificial intelligence. Throughout the history of mathematics, some seemingly useless abstract thoughts eventually become levers that pry open the boundaries of human cognition. In the wave of artificial intelligence, there are always disruptive breakthroughs that echo the intellectual seeds planted by mathematicians a century ago. From Goldbach's curiosity about extending factorials, to Euler's Gamma function that emerged triumphantly, and then to the high-dimensional semantic vectors in the Transformer model. Two seemingly unrelated threads achieve a resonance across time and space in the dialectical relationship between the discrete and the continuous. The factorial was originally a discrete concept rooted in the domain of natural numbers. Its notation N! represents the product of consecutive integers from 1 to N, serving as an indispensable computational tool in permutation and combination problems. For a long time, it was assumed that the domain of the factorial could only be non-negative integers. Just as human natural language relies on discrete written symbols and vocabulary to convey meaning. Until Goldbach posed a seemingly absurd question: how should we define the factorial of non-integers? This question tore open a rift between discrete mathematics and continuous mathematics. To answer this question, Euler provided an answer that would astonish later generations: the Gamma function. Through an integral involving a parameter, the Gamma function miraculously endowed it with the form of a recursive function. The Gamma function, anchored by the relationship Γ(n+1) = n!, extends discrete factorial points into a continuous line over the real numbers and even the complex plane. This is the subtlety of analytic continuation in mathematics: it does not create new rules out of thin air, but rather reveals the continuous essence hidden beneath the discrete appearance, allowing an originally isolated definition to grow into a function that covers a broader domain. The singularities and special values of the Gamma function further link factorials to fields such as probability statistics and complex analysis, confirming the powerful strength of abstract thinking. Hundreds of years after the birth of the idea of analytic continuation, the field of artificial intelligence is undergoing a similar revolution. Human natural language, like factorials over natural numbers, is a discrete system of symbols. We use anchor points like Chinese characters and English words to express ideas, but the subtlety of language often lies in the gaps between words—the regrets of failing to express oneself, the nuance of implied meanings, the awkwardness of misunderstandings. In essence, these are manifestations of discrete symbols' inability to precisely capture continuous semantics. Just as we cannot use natural-number factorials to describe the meaning of (1/2)!, we cannot exhaust the complex layers of thought using isolated words. The emergence of the Transformer model is precisely an instance of analytic continuation in the field of artificial intelligence: it maps discrete linguistic symbols into a high-dimensional semantic vector space. In this space, each word is no longer an isolated symbol but a vector with both direction and magnitude. The relationships between words are no longer the rigid explanations found in dictionaries, but the angles and distances between vectors. Those hard-to-articulate semantic gradations become smooth trajectories within the vector space. This high-dimensional semantic vector, like the Gamma function, breaks through the constraints of discrete symbols and captures the more essential continuous semantics underlying language. From the Gamma function to semantic vectors, we can see a clear thread of thought. Breakthroughs in human cognition often begin with the transcendence of discrete boundaries. Goldbach's question and Euler's solution turned the factorial from a computational tool into a bridge connecting the discrete and the continuous. And the predicament of natural language, along with the innovation of the Transformer, transformed semantics from a game of symbols into computable vector operations. What is even more thought-provoking is that carbon-based life, which relies on discrete linguistic symbols to think and communicate, is inevitably limited by the barrier of inadequate expression. Whereas silicon-based intelligence, which represents semantics through continuous high-dimensional vectors, can achieve more precise and efficient understanding and communication. This is not to say that machines will eventually replace humans, but rather to remind us that the abstract wisdom in mathematics—moving from the discrete to the continuous—is reshaping the way humans interact with the world. From the extension of factorials to semantic vectors, from Euler's manuscripts to the algorithms of artificial intelligence. Humanity has always been doing one thing: using a more essential mathematical language to depict this complex and continuous world.
