IV. The Path to Breakthrough: Practice First, Task as the Yardstick, Let Problems Naturally Arise from Failure. The vicious cycle of *Yes, Minister* and the inherent paradox of knowledge distillation — the solution lies not in a more complex loss function or a more refined architecture. It lies in returning to the most fundamental order of learning: practice before knowledge, hitting a wall before asking a question, task before distillation. A small model does not need to possess human metacognition, nor does it need to understand who it is or what it should learn, let alone generate high-level thinking out of thin air. It only needs to be thrown, as a first step, into a real, concrete, constrained task scenario — to run independently, reason independently, and face failure independently. In practice, something that doesn't work is a problem; in a task, generalization failure is a gap; in a scenario, output collapse is a blind spot; at boundaries, confidence collapse is a knowledge gap. Failure itself is the most precise problem list. The motivation for a small model to ask questions does not come from design or supervision, but from the existential need to survive the task. Just like humans: only after truly doing a project, stepping into a deep pit, and finding ourselves at our wit's end do we genuinely know what we should learn and what we should ask. Distillation-based spoon-feeding without practice, learning without tasks, is futile; knowledge transfer without pain points is self-deception. Truly efficient, soulful, and intelligent knowledge distillation — one that follows the laws of intelligence growth — must adhere to this closed loop: 1. The small model first "gets its feet wet" in practice, running independently on a designated vertical task — allowing failure, allowing vulnerabilities, allowing insufficient capability. 2. Identify failures in practice — automatically identify its own weaknesses and blind spots through loss, confidence, consistency, boundary pressure, and task performance. 3. With real problems, seek targeted knowledge — precisely request from the large model the dark knowledge, reasoning chains, probability distributions, and attention logic corresponding to the blind spots. 4. Lightweight absorption by the small model — only learn the core knowledge needed to solve the current pain point, no redundancy, no waste, no overcapacity. 5. Return to practice for verification — check whether the capability has been filled, whether the old pits have been leveled, then generate a new round of problems. Iterate repeatedly. From practice to knowledge, then back to practice. This is the most effective path of human learning, and the only correct path for small model knowledge distillation. V. The Ultimate Goal: Minimum Task Set — Finding the Key to Intelligence. My ultimate vision for knowledge distillation is the paradigm shift from minimum training set to minimum task set. I have always firmly believed that intelligence and generalization ability do not come from parameter scale, data volume, or training accumulation, but from the minimum necessary and sufficient structure. In trillion-parameter large models, a huge number of parameters serve the function of static knowledge storage — like a walking encyclopedia. These contents contribute extremely little, even zero, to generalization, reasoning, extrapolation, and true intelligence. What truly makes large models surpass traditional search engines, databases, and knowledge bases is their wisdom, understanding, reasoning, and generalization — their ability to comprehend, infer, adapt, and handle never-before-seen inputs. This intelligent soul occupies only a very small part of the large model, yet it is drowned in a sea of redundant parameters and static knowledge. Invisible, untraceable. What we do in distillation is to squeeze out that tiny bit of soul. The so-called minimum task set means asking: at minimum, how many types of tasks, how much data, how many parameters are needed for the model to reproduce generalization ability and intelligent emergence comparable to an ultra-large model? If we find this minimum set, it means we have, for the first time, extracted the essential composition of intelligence from the black box. We no longer need to violently stack parameters, data, and compute, trading extremely high costs for uncontrollable emergence. Small models can be trained directly on the minimum set, giving birth to intelligence, rather than passively copying the large model. We will truly grasp the design principles of intelligence, rather than relying on luck to stack a huge system. Knowledge distillation is the ladder to the minimum set — each distillation shrinking is a subtraction, each capability retention is an effective elimination. Every step closer to small and strong brings us one step closer to the truth of intelligence. And the only standard to test this minimum set is always, always the task. VI. Research Program: Task-Oriented Minimum-Set Knowledge Distillation System — A Synthesis of All Thoughts. What I advocate, practice, and believe in is a complete, self-consistent system of task-oriented minimum-set knowledge distillation, closed from philosophy to engineering. Its core program is as follows: 1. Core Stance. Large models are black-box intelligence built by addition, with enormous redundancy and an essentially unknowable nature. Knowledge distillation is not a model shrinking tool; it is a subtraction engineering effort to reverse-engineer intelligence and eliminate redundancy. The core of intelligence is generalization and understanding, not static knowledge storage. Distillation detached from tasks and practice is a pseudo-distillation without a yardstick, without direction, without meaning. A small model's questioning and learning come from practical failure, not innate metacognition. 2. Core Principles. Practice-first principle: practice before distillation, failure before questioning, scenario before knowledge. Task-as-yardstick principle: all distillation effects are judged solely by real-task generalization — task success means effective, task failure means ineffective. Subtraction-and-elimination principle: use elimination to continuously reduce parameters, data, tasks, and representations until the point where further reduction would cause intelligence to disappear. Targeted-extraction principle: the small model learns exactly what it lacks, patches exactly what collapses — no full-volume teaching, only precise problem-solving. Minimum-set goal: the ultimate goal is to find the minimum task set, minimum parameter set, and minimum data set of intelligence, cracking the black box of emergence. 3. Complete Execution Closed Loop. 1) Task definition: lock the vertical scenario, clarify the real problem and boundaries the small model needs to solve. 2) Naked-run practice: the small model independently completes the task without distillation or strong supervision, recording all failures, blind spots, and failure cases. 3) Problem generation: transform failure cases into precise learning needs, forming the small model's exclusive problem list. 4) Targeted distillation: the large model outputs only the dark knowledge, reasoning paths, attention, and probability distributions for the problem list. 5) Lightweight absorption: under its own capacity constraints, the small model absorbs only the core information needed to solve the problems. 6) Iterative verification: return to task testing, retain effective, prune invalid, continuously approach the minimum set. 7) Extreme convergence: keep subtracting until the model size is minimal and task capability is optimal, finding the intelligence kernel for that task. Conclusion: "Even with a thousand charms, to whom can I speak?" — My Life. From starting programming from zero, stepping into countless pitfalls, returning to systematic learning in the classroom, to witnessing the great wave of the large-model era, observing the entire industry shift from algorithmic innovation to brute-force stacking, from interpretable engineering to uncontrollable black boxes — there has always been a persistent question in my heart. What exactly is intelligence? Where does it come from? What does the smallest intelligence look like? These questions find no one to fully discuss them with, no one to deeply resonate with, no one to share the same frequency from engineering practice, life learning, to philosophical essence. The world is full of wonders: model iterations surge like tides, papers emerge endlessly, concepts change daily. Yet there are few thoughts that truly touch the origin of intelligence, the soul of learning, and the conscience of engineering. Many are building models but don't know why. Many are doing distillation but don't know its ultimate mission. Many are training large models but dare not face the essential emptiness behind the black box. This conversation has strung together all the confusion, practice, insight, and ideals of half my life. From a scene in a British TV show to a line of code debugging, from Delphi's drag-and-drop visualization to the subtraction philosophy of knowledge distillation, from the paradox of questioning to the ultimate pursuit of the minimum set — fully landed, self-contained, a complete system. "Even with a thousand charms, to whom can I speak?" This article records my heart, records this path, records this one-of-a-kind soulful conversation in the world. And it is left for all those who believe that intelligence lies not in scale but in essence, that learning lies not in indoctrination but in exploration, and that distillation lies not in shrinking but in returning to the truth. The key to intelligence is not in the revelry of addition, but in the extremity of subtraction. Task as the yardstick, practice as the spear, distillation as the knife, subtraction as the path — this is my entire answer.
