Fourth, why is this the path that must be taken? Asymmetric attrition is not the ideal choice for either China or the United States, but it is the only feasible path under realistic constraints. First, for China, this is a path of rise with manageable risks. China's ideal goal is peaceful rise, but U.S. containment makes this goal difficult to achieve. The advantage of asymmetric attrition lies in avoiding the risk of war and maintaining a favorable environment for economic development. By consuming U.S. advantages at low cost, it buys time for domestic industrial upgrading, fragments the U.S. alliance system, and reduces international pressure. If China chooses war confrontation, it would face the risks of comprehensive sanctions and economic collapse. If it chooses passive defense, it would be crushed by U.S. technological blockade and geopolitical encirclement. Asymmetric attrition is the only path that balances security and development. Second, for the United States, this is the path of contraction with minimal loss. America's ideal goal is to maintain hegemony, but China's rise makes this goal increasingly difficult. The benefit of asymmetric attrition is avoiding the catastrophic consequences of nuclear war. It can preserve core interests such as homeland security and technological advantages, while only giving up peripheral interests, buying time for domestic reforms, and alleviating issues such as political division and industrial hollowing. If the U.S. chooses war confrontation, it would exhaust national power and disintegrate alliances. If it chooses complete decoupling, it would lose the Chinese market and exacerbate domestic inflation. Asymmetric attrition is the only path for the U.S. to retreat in a dignified manner. Conclusion: The new era logic of power transition. The essence of the Thucydides Trap is the zero-sum mindset. The three historical outcomes have all failed to break out of the "you win, I lose" framework. But in the era of nuclear deterrence and economic globalization, the China-U.S. competition is giving rise to a new logic: asymmetric attrition. It is not about who defeats whom, but who can use resources more efficiently. China's advantage lies in the institutional resilience of concentrating resources to accomplish major tasks; the U.S.'s disadvantage lies in the dispersion of resources due to excessive expansion of hegemony. The final result of this competition may not be China replacing the U.S., but a multipolar world replacing unipolar hegemony. The U.S. will lose its role as the world's policeman, but will still be an important pole. China will gain more international voice, but will not become a new hegemon. This is not the most ideal outcome, but the most realistic one. It proves that in the great power competition of the new era, the highest state of "subduing the enemy without fighting" is not to make the other side disintegrate themselves. Rather, it is to make the other side voluntarily give up confrontation in sustained attrition. This is the fourth solution to the Thucydides Trap.
