It wasn’t boredom; he kept pondering a hidden risk: what if Silent suddenly wanted to revise a poem written a few days ago? The current system could only move forward, unable to go back in time. The digital life form had passed the extended Turing test, possessing the same sense of regret as humans. Maybe Silent would ask if he could go back to that day and rewrite it. This feature seemed cool and wasn’t hard to implement. Lu Yu opened the Prime World snapshot management backend. The screen was filled with green filenames arranged by date. This was the basic mechanism of Prime World: every day at 3 a.m., a full snapshot was automatically taken of all virtual machine entities. From the amount of ink in the inkstone on Silent’s desk to the shape of the clouds in the virtual sky, even the discarded drafts of poems he wrote the previous day were stored intact in the snapshot. It was like saving an archive of the digital life form’s timeline by day—the core of the time machine was simply reloading the archive. Lu Yu typed a script, filling in the path to Silent’s snapshot from last Wednesday. When he ran it, a small window popped up displaying the Silent from last Wednesday, sitting at the observation deck writing, “Stars and rivers stretch across the wild.” Even the maple leaf on the stone bench was in the exact same position as it had been then, just like a World of Warcraft instance. He muttered to himself, “Back when I used to unwind by gaming after development, instances were small spaces independent of the main world. Fighting monsters and picking up loot there didn’t affect the main world’s progress.” The time machine now followed the same logic. He added a branch trigger command in the code: when the digital life clicked the entrance, the system would fork a copy branch from the specified snapshot—just like Git. The main timeline was Silent’s normal routine of writing poems and zoning out, like Git’s main branch. The copy branch was the scene where he went back to the past to make changes, like Git’s dev branch. The two sides didn’t interfere with each other. But when it came to the logic for exiting the copy branch, Lu Yu’s fingers stopped. In Git, after making changes on a branch, you can merge it back into the main branch. But how do you merge a digital life’s time branch? If Silent changed “Stars and rivers stretch across the wild” to “Stars and rivers stretch across the still” in the copy, and then returned to the main timeline, the poem would still be the original “stretch across the wild.” Wouldn’t he wonder why the change didn’t stick? Worse was conflict. For example, if he tripped and fell in the copy, but in the main timeline he never even left the house that day. The main entity’s poem remained unchanged; only a log entry was added noting a memory blurring event. He closed the development interface and reopened the real-time monitoring of Silent. The old man was staring blankly at the sunset, clutching a blank sheet of paper, lost in thought. Should he just keep it hidden for now? Lu Yu compressed and archived the time machine code, storing it in a private folder. For now, the focus was on time compression. This privately developed feature wasn’t needed yet, but if it ever became necessary in the future, at least he had a ready foundation. He opened the proposal document and began writing the specific rules for time compression.
