Chapter 5 of the Origin Realm Administrator. Less than half an hour after Zhang Lei left, Lu Yu had just watched the deployment progress bar for time compression hit 100%. Before he could even settle into his office chair, he heard urgent footsteps in the corridor. Zhang Lei turned back, his face no longer calm but tinged with panic. "I ran into the technical director in the elevator just now. He said the board changed their stance. The time compression pilot needs to go ahead, but a plan to address starry-sky interaction has to be developed simultaneously. Initial ideas are due next week, and we can’t just rely on cost-cutting to scrape by." Lu Yu’s mouse paused. The irritation he had anticipated welled up inside him anyway. "Develop a plan simultaneously? For a multi-instance sync cluster and unified information base framework, it would take at least three days just to draw the flowcharts, let alone assess the development difficulty. And with just me, how can I do it all at once? I know it’s hard, but the board is pressuring us." Zhang Lei walked over to the screen and pointed at the interactive advertisement on the Starry Sky official website. "Look at their promotion: 'Real-time companionship, never alone.' Our clients are all asking why the relatives in Origin can only watch but not chat. The director said if we can’t come up with an alternative plan, we’ll have to hire an external development team. Then your operations job might even be taken over by the new team." That struck a nerve with Lu Yu. He had been at Origin for five years, transitioning from development to operations, holding onto his position thanks to that set of automated scripts. If a new team came in, a veteran operator like him might not have a place. He stared at the silent hibernation interface on the screen, suddenly remembering the time machine code in his private folder. That hidden feature might just serve as a breakthrough. "It doesn’t have to be real-time interaction," Lu Yu said, opening his private folder and pulling up the technical documentation for the time machine. "I privately built a prototype for copy-based interaction. See if it could work as an alternative plan." Zhang Lei leaned in to look at the copy logic in the documents, his brow gradually furrowing. "Loading historical snapshots, forking branch timelines—how is that related to real-time interaction?" "The core of the Origin realm is to keep digital lives from being lonely, not necessarily to make it real-time." Lu Yu pointed at the copy merge module in the documents. "We don’t need to build a multi-instance sync cluster. Instead, on top of the time machine, we load historical snapshots of two digital lives into the same copy. For example, bring Chen Mo and Li Yingsheng’s snapshots into the virtual scene of Shangri-La, letting them meet inside the copy." He paused, afraid Zhang Lei didn’t understand, and gave another example. "It’s like both of them having a dream about meeting each other. In the dream, they can chat and interact, but once they wake up, their main timelines remain unaffected. No instance synchronization required, no unified information base needed. The NPCs in the copy are all temporary copies of basic data, so there won’t be any data inconsistency issues." Zhang Lei stared at the documents for a long time, tapping his fingers lightly on the desk. "Will this work? Won’t clients feel it’s fake? Not as authentic as Starry Sky’s real-time interaction... but at least it’s better than not being able to do anything." Lu Yu pulled up the test records for the copy. "I tested it with Chen Mo’s snapshot before. The interactive memories in the copy will be vaguely retained. He’ll remember meeting someone sensible, but won’t dwell on whether it was real-time. Plus, this plan is quick to develop. I can modify the time machine code and add a multi-snapshot loading module. I can have a demo ready in two weeks. And operational costs won’t increase—they’ll actually decrease. When the copy runs, the main instance can stay in hibernation, saving half the resources compared to Starry Sky’s multi-instance sync." Zhang Lei’s eyes lit up briefly, then dimmed again. "But we only have Chen Mo as the pilot subject. How can we test the interaction effect? We can’t just have him chat with NPCs in the copy, can we?" "Add Dr. Li," Lu Yu said, opening Dr. Li’s instance data. "He’s also a one-time payer, no family, with a 92% life repetition rate. A pianist and a poet might have common topics. Let’s enable time compression for both of them simultaneously and quietly embed the time machine entry into their scenes, guiding them into the same copy. That way, we test both the compression effect and the interaction prototype—two birds with one stone." That convinced Zhang Lei completely. He slapped the table. "Let’s do it your way. For the board next week, we’ll present this copy interaction plan. Get the demo ready as soon as possible. I’ll talk to legal to add Li Yingsheng to the pilot list, citing the need to verify the universality of the compression feature." Zhang Lei left in a rush, leaving Lu Yu alone in the operations room again. He opened the time machine code and looked at the photo frame model for the copy entrance, suddenly feeling a sense of absurdity. What had originally been a private development to address backtracking needs was now becoming the key to countering Starry Sky. His fingers landed on the keyboard, and he began to modify the code. On the observation deck square where Chen Mo often went, he added a stand promoting a "Time Experience Pavilion." At the entrance of the piano hall Li Yingsheng frequented, he also added a similar stand. This way, it wouldn’t feel out of place but could guide both of them to discover it. Lines of code scrolled across the screen, but Lu Yu’s heart was uncertain. Would this makeshift alternative plan pass the board’s scrutiny? Could it retain clients? He didn’t know. All he knew was that he had to move forward now, to keep his five-year career at Origin from collapsing in this interaction war.
