Winter rain heralds the late year, and the grand feast has faded. A sober observer's notes on the overreach, plunder, and destined end of Western hegemony. Xiamen's winter is rainy—dense, damp, and cold, yet not bitingly harsh. The temperature outside is placid and ordinary, but within churns a sobering melancholy over an era drawing to a close. From a biological instinct, humans are no different from all animals. Facing the unfamiliar and unknown, they are naturally wary and guarded. Yet long immersed in a tranquil illusion, with genuine danger never truly descending, that vigilance dulls, numbs, and ultimately falls into deep slumber. The tale of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" repeated a thousand times leads listeners to believe the wolf will never come—until fangs break through the door, and they realize the alarm was never false. Over the past half-century, the Western world has crafted exactly such a prolonged anesthesia, keeping generations living in lukewarm water, oblivious to the boiling point drawing ever closer. Now gold has broken through $5,000 per ounce, silver holds steady at $120, and continues to climb. Markets still analyze supply-demand, speculation, and geopolitical conflicts, yet few touch the essence: this is not a rise in precious metals, but a collapse in the credit of the fiat currency system. It is not that rare metals have become scarce, but that the half-century of depreciation hidden by the dollar, euro, and yen can no longer be concealed. Calculated from the peak of the Hunt brothers' silver crisis in the 1980s, adjusted for the true magnitude of dollar over-issuance, purchasing power erosion, and monetary debasement, silver should stand above $170, and gold between $5,000 and $6,000. The current surge is merely a return to the long-distorted true value—the final alarm from the old monetary order. And this truth has been masked by the West through a precise and ruthless system for three or four decades. For years, the West has engaged in chronic monetary over-issuance, runaway fiscal deficits, and exponential growth in national debt. By the most basic laws of money, this should have triggered severe inflation and a collapse in purchasing power. Yet for decades, the average person's direct experience has been relatively stable—commodity prices haven't spiraled out of control, and fiat credit appears unshakeable. This is not a success of the monetary system, but a deliberate deception under the global division of labor. Emerging manufacturing nations, led by China, have continuously flooded Western consumer markets with massive, efficient, and ultra-cheap industrial goods. Clothing, appliances, electronics, daily necessities, equipment—everything that can be standardized, scaled, and traded across borders has long been in oversupply, with prices suppressed to extremely low levels, even declining year by year. This super-supply system forcibly offset the purchasing power erosion caused by Western monetary over-issuance, keeping the most visible commodity inflation low and creating a collective illusion of stable currency and reliable credit. Western elites, central banks, and academic institutions only show the public the mildness of commodity inflation, while deliberately hiding another undeniable fact: the real pressure of fiat depreciation has all been dumped onto non-tradable local service sectors. Healthcare, education, legal services, labor, local life services—these cannot rely on cheap overseas supply to curb costs and must bear the full brunt of declining purchasing power. Over decades, Western service prices have skyrocketed in stair-step fashion, labor costs have soared, and service expenses have hollowed out the middle class, becoming an unbearable burden on society. Commodity inflation is masked by globalization; service inflation is borne by the domestic bottom tier. Fiat currency appears strong on the surface while its intrinsic value continuously bleeds. The elite enjoy hegemonic dividends; the bottom endures the cost of devaluation. This is the false balance the West has maintained for decades—the largest and longest-running sleight of hand in modern monetary history. To sustain this balance, Western elites attempted to replicate the path of using cheap goods to offset inflation, applying the same tactic to the labor market. The logic is straightforward and ruthless: if overseas industrial goods can suppress commodity prices and mask currency depreciation, then large-scale immigration, flooding the labor market with excess supply, can similarly suppress local labor costs, continue to hide the collapse of fiat purchasing power. At the policy level, this thinking evolved into decades of liberal immigration and import programs in Europe and America—essentially enjoying the dividends of cheap labor to replicate the life-extending effect of cheap goods. For a long time, this strategy did work. A large influx of foreign workers entered low-end services, logistics, agriculture, and construction, slowing the rise in labor costs and delaying the eruption of service inflation. But this design ultimately backfired, with the root cause being a complete transformation in immigrant composition. Early immigrants to the West often came with a willingness to pioneer, work hard, and integrate—trading labor for survival, and contribution for status. Later waves, however, consisted largely of economic migrants drawn by high welfare, generous benefits, and public services. They lacked motivation to work, had little desire to integrate, and instead consumed welfare systems rather than supplementing labor supply. Immigrants were no longer a cheap labor pool but a new source of fiscal burden—welfare spending pushed higher, social divisions deepened, cultural conflicts intensified. The very tool meant to suppress service inflation and dilute currency depreciation pressure became a negative asset that exacerbated fiscal deficits and accelerated systemic fragility. The design of using labor supply to offset inflation completely collapsed. Yet there remains one critical variable that allowed the West to sustain this feast of borrowing from the future for so long—a factor completely buried by mainstream narratives but capable of altering the course of history. The dissolution of the Soviet Union and the integration of Eastern Europe into the EU handed Europe a once-in-a-lifetime windfall that lasted decades. This was not a victory of systems, not a triumph of free markets, and certainly not a win for any ideology—it was simply a zero-cost plunder after adversaries disarmed themselves. Before the USSR’s collapse, it possessed tens of trillions’ worth of heavy industrial assets, energy facilities, mineral bases, transportation networks, research systems, and a mature industrial workforce. German reunification and the batch accession of Eastern European countries into the EU effectively gave Western Europe an entire continent’s worth of high-quality assets for free. Hundreds of millions of educated, disciplined, low-cost workers; a complete industrial base and supporting capacity; vast new consumer markets and raw material sources; and long-term, cheap oil, gas, and mineral supplies from Russia and Central Asia. The population, market, production capacity, and resource hinterland of the entire EU expanded by nearly half overnight—as if a new continent had been handed over without any war, construction, or integration costs. This was a rare wealth transfer in modern human history. Europe’s post-war prosperity, welfare system maintenance, industrial upgrades, and low-inflation environment were largely not due to efficient internal institutions, but to living off the legacy of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Cheap energy suppressed production costs, cheap labor suppressed wage growth, new markets absorbed production capacity, and massive heavy assets were acquired by Western capital at near-giveaway prices. Without this Cold War victory windfall, Europe’s welfare system, debt model, and monetary stability would have faced an explicit crisis two decades ago. Mainstream narratives always attribute Western sustained prosperity to institutional superiority, while deliberately erasing the core truth: they simply picked up the enormous wealth their opponent voluntarily abandoned, using someone else’s reserves to extend their own life. Relying on cheap goods from globalization, the Soviet and Eastern European inheritance, continuous bloodletting from colonies and currency zones, and the gradual selling of ancestral assets, the Western world stretched a doomed debt carnival into half a century.
