**The End of the End of History** In 1992, Francis Fukuyama, against the backdrop of the Cold War's conclusion, wrote *The End of History and the Last Man*, asserting that Western-style democracy is the ultimate form of human societal evolution. Yet, everything in the universe follows the objective laws of birth, aging, decline, and death. From the smallest living beings to the vast cosmos, nothing escapes this life cycle. To declare a certain system eternal based solely on its current state—reaching the "end of history"—fundamentally violates natural law from its very premise. Moreover, Fukuyama was embedded within the era and the institutional system he observed, making the observer and the observed one and the same. Having neither witnessed the complete rise-and-fall cycle of this system, nor being free from the bias of survivorship, he was unable to see the potential for its demise. Naturally, he lacked the objective conditions to deliver a definitive final verdict. Following this cognitive logic, the dialogue between Chang Weisi and Wang Miao in *The Three-Body Problem* precisely illustrates this inherent contradiction: "Professor Wang, have you experienced any major upheavals in your life? Upheavals that suddenly and completely changed your life? For you, the world became utterly different overnight." "No." "Then your life is an accident. The world is full of so many unpredictable factors, yet your life has had no upheavals." Wang Miao thought for a long time but still didn't understand. "Isn't that the case for most people? Then most people's lives are accidents? But so many generations have lived such uneventful lives—are they all accidents?" Wang Miao shook his head and laughed. "I have to admit my comprehension is poor today. What you're saying is..." "Yes. All of human history is also an accident. From the Stone Age to today, there have been no major upheavals—how lucky. But since it's luck, it must come to an end one day. Now I'm telling you: It's over. Prepare yourself." This dialogue reveals the philosophical paradox hidden within survivorship bias. If the observer and the observed system are one and the same, there is never a way to personally witness the system's demise. Once a system reaches its end, the observer embedded within it perishes along with it, completely losing the qualification to observe and summarize. This is an inherent logical limitation. Anyone living within any civilization or system, bound by both their own life cycle and the objective environment, can only see the reality of continued existence. They cannot see the countless possibilities that have perished in history. Naturally, they are not qualified to deliver a final, definitive judgment on the system in which they reside. Only later generations or successors, after personally experiencing the complete cycle of a thing's rise and fall, can possess the conditions to form a relatively objective and fair evaluation. Examining Fukuyama's "End of History" through this logic, the inherent flaws in its foundation become clear. **1. Confirmation by Chinese and Foreign Historiographical Traditions** It is an objective necessity that official history is rarely compiled during a reigning dynasty; history is written by later dynasties. This principle has been empirically verified by thousands of years of Chinese historiography. In the pre-Qin period, there were famous stories of court historians who refused to compromise. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, historians adhered to the principle of recording truth, refusing to submit to feudal lords' demands to alter history. They were killed one after another. Their sons and disciples continued the task, still writing honestly, and were also killed. This proves that observers within a system are naturally constrained by institutions, power, and the limitations of their era. To define the current era in a completely neutral, objective, and unbiased manner is itself nearly impossible. Looking at the Twenty-Four Histories, the *Book of Han* was compiled in the Eastern Han, the *Old Book of Tang* and *New Book of Tang* were completed in the Five Dynasties and Song dynasties, and the *History of Ming* was finalized in the Qing dynasty. Without exception, the official histories of Chinese orthodox dynasties were compiled by subsequent dynasties. Apart from objective factors such as the destruction of historical materials after a dynasty's fall and the lack of manpower to compile history during chaotic times, the core underlying logic is that the life cycle of the people of an era is completely nested within the life cycle of the reigning dynasty. People cannot see the final end of a dynasty's decline and fall; they can only witness a corner of its heyday, making it easy to glorify the present, obscure hidden dangers, and misjudge trends. Only after a dynasty has completed the full cycle of rise, peak, decline, and fall can a new regime, freed from the shackles of vested interests and the limitations of the era, review the entire process from the perspective of a third-party successor and "burier," and deliver a truly definitive judgment. This underlying logic of cross-cycle evaluation also applies to modern academic evaluation systems. The Nobel Prize is rarely awarded to scholars and creators in their prime; it is generally given after the laureates' later years, when their lifetime achievements are fully settled. The core logic is identical to compiling history by a later dynasty: the achievements of an individual who has not completed their life cycle still have variables, and their value is not yet finalized. Short-term brilliance cannot define ultimate height; only when time comes to an end can the froth of an era be removed and a fair evaluation given. **2. Examining the Logic of Definitive Judgment, the "End of History" Contains an Inherent Paradox** Fukuyama proposed the "End of History" during the brief historical window of the Cold War's conclusion, declaring Western-style institutions the ultimate form of human societal evolution. From the perspective of scholarly methodology, this assertion violated the laws of cyclical operation from its inception. At that time, this institutional model was in an upward phase of periodic expansion; its deep-seated wealth rifts, cyclical economic crises, social governance defects, and civilizational adaptability shortcomings had not fully surfaced. The exploration of institutional forms in human civilization and the iterative process of global social forms were far from over. Fukuyama's fatal error was a classic case of deep survivorship bias. As an observer within his era, trapped in his specific historical slice, he forcibly defined the accident of short-term survival and the appearance of temporary superiority as the ultimate inevitability of human historical evolution. This is akin to a court historian of a prosperous dynasty, relying on a momentary period of peace to declare the dynasty immortal. To forcibly declare an end before a thing has completed its full life cycle, when the final outcome is completely unknown, is itself a logically untenable paradox. **3. From the Perspective of Contingency, the "End of History" Can Neither Be Currently Verified Nor Completely Falsified** Based on the logic of survivorship bias and the philosophy of life cycles, we do not need to crudely completely deny or affirm the "End of History." The strengths, weaknesses, boundaries, and fates of all systems, civilizations, and social forms are the result of probabilistic accumulation. Definitive conclusions require spanning scales of hundreds or thousands of years, through countless generational changes, crisis tests, and civilizational comparisons. As long as human civilization continues to evolve and institutional exploration continues, all current "ultimate" judgments are merely contingent views of a particular era. Situated within the system, we lack sufficient cross-cycle samples to prove its ultimate correctness. Nor have we witnessed its complete end to be able to completely refute it. Therefore, our era can never deliver a definitive judgment on it. The true ending and fair evaluation can only be written by future successor civilizations and subsequent historical cycles. **4. Extracting a General Scholarly Methodology** Combining the philosophical dialectics of *The Three-Body Problem*, China's millennia-old iron rule of historiography, the evaluation logic of the Nobel Prize, and the profound lesson of the "End of History," we can summarize a universally rigorous scholarly and cognitive law: All individuals, institutions, civilizations, and theories that continue to exist inherently subject their internal observers to survivorship bias. The observer and the observed system coexist symbiotically; they cannot observe their own end, cannot exhaust the probability of demise, and cannot escape the confines of their era. Therefore, for anything that has not completed its full life cycle of rise and fall, there can be no contemporary definitive judgment. To approach objective truth, there are only two paths: one is to extend the time dimension and wait for the thing to completely conclude; the other is to step outside a single system and achieve multi-dimensional cross-era and cross-civilizational comparisons. Beyond these, all ultimate conclusions are partial and subjective conjectures.
