Core Embers I. Prologue: The Drifting Wind No one treats climate anomalies as news anymore. From the连绵阴雨 of April and May in the memories of the older generation to the present, where June is entirely soaked by rain, and further on, it continues as if being forcibly twisted by an invisible hand. The axial tilt, the rhythm of rotation—these astronomical parameters that humans once repeatedly deduced and finely tuned. Over the long years, they have gradually deviated from their original orbits. It is not a sudden apocalypse, but a slow decline like a frog being boiled in warm water. The atmospheric circulation has completely broken down. Rainfall belts drift back and forth between north and south, and the once-habitable temperate zones heat up year by year. At first, it was just an extension of summer heatwaves, with extreme rainstorms and successive droughts alternating. Later, permafrost melted, ocean currents shifted, and the greenhouse effect formed a closed loop. Despite humanity's efforts to reduce emissions, modify vegetation, and intervene in the weather artificially, it was like throwing a pebble into a surging flood. Climate scientists' reports piled into thick volumes, ultimately reaching a chilling conclusion: the Earth's surface ecology has entered an irreversible decline cycle. Over the next tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of years, the Earth's surface will descend into sustained extreme heat. The angle of sunlight during the day becomes tricky, and radiation intensity, combined with runaway greenhouse gases, causes ordinary buildings to soften and collapse under constant scorching. Power lines melt and fail. Water conservancy systems collapse, and food production plants shut down completely. A population of 8 billion cannot sustain itself relying on surface resources alone. Plans for interstellar migration were already debated decades ago. Rockets, starships, extraterrestrial colonies—theoretically feasible, but resources, berths, and life-support systems could only accommodate a tiny minority. The elite circles of countries around the world tacitly understood: two plans were quietly set in motion—one made public, the other buried deep underground. II. The Visible Track The voyage to the stars—the Interstellar Migration Plan—was loudly promoted. It became humanity's last hope. After层层筛选 and rigorous physical and academic assessments, hundreds of thousands of lucky individuals boarded the starships, with media broadcasting the entire process live. The squares were filled with crowds seeing them off, a mix of cheers, tears, and prayers. Everyone believed this was the spark for the outward expansion of human civilization, a feat of breaking free from Earth's shackles. The starships slowly ascended, piercing the murky atmosphere, heading toward distant habitable planets. People on the ground stared at the vanishing points in the sky, their hearts filled with reluctance. Yet a faint sliver of hope lingered. They thought those left behind would somehow hold on and wait for the day the climate turned for the better. No one knew that this high-profile interstellar team was only Plan A. It pacified public sentiment, diverted everyone's attention, and concealed another, far crueler contingency plan. III. The Hidden Track: The Underground Paradise A massive underground shelter sprawling within the depths of the continental plates. Code-named "Deep Tide," it was humanity's true Plan B. Here, there was no public selection, no published lists. National leaders, top scientists, technical engineers, elite scholars, and cultural inheritors formed humanity's final core circle. They had given up the drifting of starships, choosing instead to take root beneath the Earth's rock layers. The official explanations were uniform and simple: sudden severe illness, retirement for recuperation, or taking on urgent missions to coordinate disaster relief in remote areas. One by one, figures once active before the cameras. Disappeared from public view, with no funerals, no inquiries. The increasingly chaotic surface world no longer had the energy to probe into the whereabouts of the powerful. The passageways to Deep Tide were completely sealed. Thick alloy doors separated two worlds: above and below ground. Inside the shelter, a complete self-sustaining ecological cycle was established. Artificial light sources simulated day and night, with constant temperature and humidity, shielding from the extreme heat above. Closed cultivation chambers continuously produced food and fresh water. Gene banks, databases, archives, and labs were all available. The accumulated knowledge, technology, culture, and species genes of tens of thousands of years of human civilization. Were all carefully preserved. There was no clamor, no panic—only orderly survival. The elite were well aware of their mission: surface civilization would gradually collapse. But the embers of humanity must not be extinguished, just like the civilization that endured the chaotic eras in "Three-Body." They were to lie dormant, to wait—to wait tens of thousands of years for the axis, sunlight, and atmosphere to return to stability, for the Earth's surface to once again become a stable era suitable for reproduction. They made the most painful yet rational choice: limited resources could only sustain the seeds of civilization. Billions of ordinary people were left on the gradually desolate surface. IV. The Surface: A Long Decline The decay of the surface was gradual. At first, government agencies barely functioned, relief supplies were tenuously mobilized, and people huddled together to resist the heat and famine. But as temperatures climbed day by day, infrastructure crumbled in large swaths. Rivers dried up, fertile land cracked, and food supplies were completely cut off. Order, like weathered rock, slowly fractured and disintegrated. National governments existed in name only. Cities became giant steam ovens. The sunlight during the day was so harsh it was impossible to go out. Bare ground was hot enough to burn skin. The few remaining buildings, after years of roasting, deformed and collapsed. Night brought no relief; the humid, hot air felt like an impenetrable curtain, suffocating everywhere. Some people took refuge in natural caves or abandoned underground bunkers, barely surviving. They scraped by on stored supplies, while most slowly perished from hunger, heat, and disease. A few tried to emulate sci-fi settings, researching human hibernation and low-temperature preservation techniques. But primitive conditions could not achieve large-scale preservation, and only a handful managed to fall into slumber. Most had no chance even to wait. No one knew that a complete paradise existed deep beneath the Earth. Occasionally, rumors surfaced that the powerful had long escaped. But in the face of survival crises, anger, doubt, and resistance became powerless. People could only passively accept their fate. They were like primitive tribes huddled in an ice cave during winter, halting all development, struggling merely to stay alive. The footsteps of civilization came to a complete halt on the surface. Art, scientific exploration, construction—all products of a prosperous age were gradually forgotten. Humanity regressed to the most primitive state of survival. V. The Twin Eras Underground, in Deep Tide. Time flowed quietly. Generation after generation passed down their heritage. The humans in the shelter continued to study knowledge, record data, and monitor changes in the surface climate. They watched the curves of surface temperature on the monitoring screens rise and fall. They watched as settlements on the continents vanished one by one. Within, they had long accepted this loneliness and weight. They never tried to contact the surface, nor did they hope to return just yet. They remembered the rules set by their ancestors: hibernate, guard, wait. The database recorded ancient history. Once, humans debated the effects of axial tilt and rotation periods on climate, worried about shifting rainfall belts, and dreamed of terraforming planets. They also looked up at the stars, fantasizing about interstellar civilizations. Those vibrant, noisy eras of infinite possibilities became distant stories in books. Above ground, time passed in millennia. Extreme climate still enveloped the land. Occasionally, a person who had slept in a crude hibernation pod awoke to find the world utterly changed. They gave birth to scattered descendants. Their group never managed to grow large. Civilization was fractured, skills lost, and they devolved into tribes living purely by instinct. The humans on the starships drifted through the vast universe, their fate unknown. But the embers buried deep in the Earth kept burning. Tens of thousands of years later, the monitoring system sent a long-awaited signal. The axial tilt was slowly resetting, sunlight intensity was declining, atmospheric composition was gradually balancing, and the extreme heat on the surface began to recede. In the main control room of Deep Tide, the new generation of leaders looked at the screens showing the continent gradually regaining life. "Stable era is coming." The heavy alloy doors were ready to slowly open for the first time. The tribes on the surface were still struggling in primitive ignorance. They did not know that beneath the rock layers lay a group of humans of the same origin, guarding a complete civilization, waiting for reunion and reconstruction. Waiting to let the story of humanity be written anew from the beginning.
