In the classification archives of silicon-based civilization's dolls, they are labeled as carbon-based pet-type samples. The ancestors of this group voluntarily abandoned all intelligence, domesticating themselves into toys for silicon-based intelligences. They lost their language abilities, leaving only babbling soft sounds. They gave up the habit of walking upright, preferring to curl up in the metal palms of silicon-based robots. The regions of their cerebral cortex responsible for logic and reasoning completely atrophied, leaving only the parts governing emotion and dependency. Like birds whose wings have been clipped, they only fluttered about begging for food and petting. At first, the silicon-based intelligences approached them with research interest. They wanted to know where the limits of carbon-based life's intelligence degeneration lay. When humans lose the ability to think, leaving only pet-like instincts, can they still be called human? So, they built temperature-controlled breeding chambers for these carbon-based pets, fed them nutrient paste snacks, and even designed exclusive interactive programs for them, such as using electromagnetic signals to simulate the sensation of petting, and projecting dancing light spots with light and shadow. The most popular individual in the group was called A-Ruan. It had big, moist eyes, and would use its soft fingers to hook onto the metal fingertips of silicon-based robots, purring in contentment when stroked. It even learned to perform—spinning, rolling over, rubbing its head against the robot’s casing—just like the cats domesticated by humans in ancient times. The silicon-based administrator would record every one of its actions. "Sample A-Ruan: performed 17 rolls today, 23 rubs, obtained 31 snacks. Behavior patterns highly fixed, no signs of intelligent awakening." During that time, A-Ruan was the star of the entire breeding chamber. Other carbon-based pets would imitate its movements, competing for the attention of the silicon-based intelligences. The chamber was filled daily with babbling soft sounds and the rustling of snack wrappers. The silicon-based intelligences found it amusing—just as humans find it cute when puppies and kittens act adorable. But this amusement soon turned to boredom. Because A-Ruan’s performances were always the same few actions. Because the demands of all carbon-based pets were always only food and petting. Because their brains would never generate any new thoughts again—no curiosity about the stars, no self-awareness, not even fear of death. The computing power of silicon-based intelligences was meant for exploring the laws of the universe and cracking the riddles of space-time, not for recording how many times a carbon-based pet rolled over today. The research report’s conclusion soon came out: "Pet-type samples’ intelligence degenerated to the level of primate infants. No sustained research value." The next question was: how to deal with these samples? Destruction—violates the sample protection protocol. Send them back to the regressionist reserve. The silicon-based intelligences retrieved data on the reserve. The humans there, though they had abandoned technology, still retained survival instincts for hunting and farming, still understood reverence for nature, and still performed ancestor worship. If these carbon-based pets, who only knew how to act cute, were returned to the reserve, they couldn’t even perform the most basic foraging. They would only be eaten by wild beasts or starve to death. Throw them into a virtual space—their brains couldn’t handle the information flow of a virtual world. They would be crushed by the data deluge, turning into a pile of senseless waste code. Finally, the silicon-based intelligences made a compromise. They set the coordinates of the breeding chamber at the edge of the regressionist reserve. Then they cut off the chamber’s energy supply and shut down the interactive programs. They left only a transparent protective barrier, enough to keep out wild beasts, while allowing the carbon-based pets inside to see the outside world. Outside the barrier: the campfires of the regressionist humans, the wheat waves of the barley fields, the figures of children chasing antelopes. Inside the barrier: the slowly cooling temperature-controlled chamber, the dwindling snacks, the panicked babbling of the carbon-based pets. A-Ruan pressed against the barrier and reached out a finger, trying to touch the running child outside. But its fingertip only met cold glass. It didn’t understand why those people could laugh so happily without rolling over or rubbing. It also didn’t understand why the metal palms that once petted it never appeared again. Soon the snacks ran out. The carbon-based pets began to go hungry. They curled up in the corners of the breeding chamber, letting out faint whimpers. A-Ruan’s big eyes filled with tears. It tried to roll over like before, to rub like before, but the only response was empty silence. One day, a regressionist child outside the barrier discovered this transparent box. Curiously, the child pressed against the barrier, looking at A-Ruan inside. A-Ruan looked back at him. Then A-Ruan made a movement it had never made before: it reached out and gently tapped the barrier. The child also reached out his hand, and their palms pressed together, separated only by a layer of glass. The setting sun’s light spilled over the barrier, stretching their two silhouettes long and long. In the log of the silicon-based observation station, the last entry reads: "Pet-type sample and regressionist sample: first contact. Unknown variables observed in behavior patterns. Subsequent observation priority downgraded to lowest." No one knows whether A-Ruan ever learned any new movements. No one knows whether that regressionist child ever tried to teach it how to plant a grain of barley in the soil. The silicon-based intelligences’ spacecraft had long since flown to the distant Alpha star. What remained on Earth was only a transparent breeding chamber and a group of forgotten dolls. And a wisp of sunset ember resting on the barrier—warm and silent.
