The Magna Carta is by no means a democratic charter. It dismantles the millennial narrative of lies and reveals the true essence of Western democracy. The current debate over whether the 1215 Magna Carta qualifies as a democratic charter may appear to be a historical analysis, but in reality, it is a long-running battle of public opinion rhetoric. The answer is very clear: from beginning to end, the Magna Carta was never a democratic charter for all people. It was merely a feudal agreement between the medieval English king and hereditary nobles, as well as church lords, to divide interests and define the boundaries of power. Deliberately packaging it as the origin of modern democracy is essentially a distortion of history. It fabricates a false narrative that Western democracy has existed since ancient times, echoing Fukuyama's "End of History" theory, and forcefully promotes Western-style systems as the only viable development path for all developing countries. This further undermines the confidence of other nations in their own paths and systems. I. The Era's Backdrop. Under the shadow of serfdom, the底层 masses had no human rights whatsoever. To judge whether a document is a democratic charter, one must first examine the social structure of its time and where power truly resided. Medieval Western Europe was universally characterized by serfdom, an unavoidable historical fact. At that time, serfs and tenant farmers were entirely dependent on the lords of the manors, with their personal freedom firmly controlled by the nobility. The lords had extensive power over the底层 masses on their lands. They could arbitrarily assign labor and collect taxes. Historically, many parts of Western Europe also had shameful customs like the "droit du seigneur" (right of the first night), which trampled on human dignity. This meant that the vast majority of ordinary laborers, who made up the bulk of the population, could not even secure basic personal rights or dignity, let alone civil or democratic rights. During the same period, Russia was deeply entrenched in a typical serfdom system. Serfs were treated as the private property of lords, subject to arbitrary sale and disposal. In a society where the vast majority were bound by personal dependency and lacked individual rights, there was no soil for cultivating democracy for all. The Magna Carta was born in such an era. The only participants in its negotiation and signing were the English king and the great nobles who held fiefs, armies, and judicial power, along with high-ranking church officials. The底层 serfs and commoners had no representatives involved, and none of the document's provisions ever fought for any rights for ordinary people. Its so-called "rights" belonged solely to the ruling upper class from start to finish. II. Essential Nature: A Power Contract Between Nobles and the King, Comparable to the Contest Between the Zhou Emperor and Feudal Lords. Stripping away the rose-colored滤镜, the core of the Magna Carta is highly similar to the agreements between the Zhou emperor and various feudal states during China's Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. From the Western to Eastern Zhou, the Zhou emperor was the nominal supreme ruler under heaven. However, each feudal lord possessed their own fiefs, armies, and governance powers. The Zhou emperor could not arbitrarily interfere in the internal affairs of the feudal states, nor could he unjustly encroach upon their interests. The lords entered into covenants among themselves and with the Zhou emperor to delineate spheres of power and protect their hereditary privileges. The same applied to England in 1215. The nobility, dissatisfied with the king's arbitrary taxation, encroachment on lands, and violation of feudal traditions, forced the king to sign the Magna Carta through military pressure. The core function of this document was to constrain royal power and protect the hereditary lands, wealth, and autonomous privileges of the nobility and the church. In simple terms, it was an agreement to divide benefits within the ruling class—a mutual check among the powerful—and had nothing to do with modern democracy where the people are the masters. The famous saying, "The wind may enter, the rain may enter, but the king cannot enter," has been twisted to imply protection of commoners' private property. The truth is that the king could not enter a dwelling on a noble's land, not because the tenant had protected individual rights, but because the land and all people on it belonged to the noble. The king had no right to overstep and interfere with the noble's private property. Packaging the privileges of feudal lords as universal private rights is the core sleight of hand in this historical myth. III. Breaking Through the Rhetoric: Modern Western Democracy Only Gradually Became a Reality in the Last Century. Many people, by mythologizing the Magna Carta, claim that Western democracy has a nearly thousand-year tradition, an inherent civilizational advantage. They use this to argue that their system is the only standard answer for human development. But when we compare it with real history, this argument completely collapses. Even in European and American countries, universal suffrage and full democratic rights for all citizens were achieved only very late. In Britain, the birthplace of the Magna Carta, women gained full parliamentary voting rights only gradually in the early 20th century. The classic literary work *The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes* is highly realistic. In "The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire," it indirectly references the social reality of British women struggling for suffrage at the time. This vividly confirms the fact that women were long excluded from democratic rights. Looking at the United States, which boasts of being a "beacon of democracy," its history is equally hard to scrutinize. After the Civil War abolished slavery, Black people's voting rights remained heavily restricted. It wasn't until the civil rights movement in the 1960s that Black Americans truly gained equal voting rights. White American women only officially obtained the right to vote in 1920 through the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. All told, the history of universal basic democratic rights for all Americans spans less than a century. On one hand, they exalt a nearly thousand-year-old agreement that served only the feudal aristocracy as the progenitor of democracy. On the other hand, they deliberately conceal the fact that their own modern universal democratic rights came late. This narrative itself is full of lies and contradictions. Modern Western democracy is the result of continuous struggles, negotiations, and reforms by the people in modern societies. It is not an inherent system inherited from the Middle Ages. IV. Seeing Through the Deep-Seated Motive: Behind the Historical Narrative Lies a Political Scheme to Monopolize Development Paths. Insisting on packaging the Magna Carta as the origin of democracy is not a mere historical cognitive bias. Foreign forces, some Western NGOs, and the public opinion influenced by them, colluding with Fukuyama's "End of History" and the Washington Consensus, harbor layers of sinister intentions. First, by distorting history, they create a sense of institutional superiority, shaping Western one-person-one-vote democracy as the ultimate form of human civilization. Second, they deny the diversity of world civilizations and development paths. They force developing countries to ignore their own history, culture, and national conditions, and blindly copy Western systems. Finally, exploiting the tendency of such systems to easily cause factional conflicts and social divisions in many countries, they cultivate proxies, interfere in internal affairs, and achieve long-term manipulation. Moreover, the full implementation of Western-style universal democratic systems has been in place for no more than 200 years at most. In the context of thousands of years of human institutional evolution, this is an extremely short period. Forcefully promoting a system that has only been tested for a little over a century as the "end of history" is inherently absurd. Today, the internal flaws of this system have fully erupted: money politics dominates, partisan struggles lead to government shutdowns, social divisions worsen, and grassroots governance collapses. Many Western countries are already plagued by chaos and deep-seated problems. Yet, despite their own systems being full of issues, they spare no effort to export their model to the world, misleading developing countries onto wrong paths. Such actions deserve the harshest condemnation. The hype around the Magna Carta myth is essentially part of an information war: on one hand, beautifying the Western system and mythologizing its historical origins; on the other hand, deliberately downplaying and negating the development models explored by other countries, aiming to undermine our confidence in our own path and system. It pressures us to abandon the development path that suits our national conditions. Conclusion: Restoring Historical Truth. The Magna Carta is a typical feudal aristocratic rights agreement with no connection to modern universal democracy. We never deny that democracy, rule of law, and human rights are common values of humanity. We also recognize that various systems have lessons worth learning. However, we firmly oppose the distortion of history, the mythologizing of a single system, and the imposition of ideological hegemony. In the long river of history, the vitality of a system does not lie in boasting about its length of history, but in whether it fits national conditions, solves real problems, and achieves long-term stability. There is no one-size-fits-all institutional template in the world. Every country's independent choice of its development path is a legitimate right that should not be interfered with. Recognizing the historical fraud, seeing the real predicament of Western democracy, and strengthening our own confidence in our path and system—these are the most powerful responses to various public opinion traps. Proceeding steadily based on our national reality is the most effective response. V. Elevated Analysis: The Cognitive Warfare Risks Lurking Behind This Public Opinion Storm. If ordinary netizens simply have debates due to cognitive biases, that is understandable. However, given the uniformity of rhetoric, attack tactics, and distorted logic, as well as the deliberate amplification of social contradictions, the mythologizing of Western pseudo-history, and the fixed orientation of negating local development, we have reason to judge that this is no longer a mere difference of opinion among netizens. It involves organized ideological infiltration and cognitive warfare. 1. The Underlying Logic of Cognitive Warfare: Relying on Old Narratives to Create Ideological Confusion. For a long time, various foreign forces have used so-called "democracy foundations" and numerous NGOs and opinion agencies to promote a fixed narrative template in the global public opinion arena. This template traces modern Western civilization back to the Middle Ages, mythologizes historical symbols like the Magna Carta, and shapes a binary historical view: the West is naturally free, democratic, and respectful of private rights, while the East is naturally autocratic and backward. This narrative, after decades of dissemination, has deeply influenced some people's cognition. When we restore history and puncture this carefully woven myth, we shake the foundation of their public opinion. Therefore, what follows is not rational debate but a unified counterattack of distortion and attack. The core goal is clear: to maintain the discourse power of this false historical narrative, continuously inject bias into the domestic sphere, and fracture the public's objective understanding of history and national development. 2. Operational Characteristics: Distinguishing Ordinary Netizens from Organized Forces. We do not deny that most commenters expressing different views are simply misled by long-term one-sided propaganda, forming fixed cognitive patterns—mere conceptual deviations. However, some comments exhibit clear characteristics of organized guidance: First, highly templated rhetoric—repeatedly using fixed labels like "negating private property" or "opposing rule of law," ignoring the original text's logic, and deliberately steering the discourse toward confrontation. Second, precisely grabbing individual social pain points and amplifying them infinitely, deliberately渲染 negative emotions, and forcing historical topics into attacks on the current system. Third, unconditionally beautifying Western history while rejecting any objective examination or dialectical analysis, forming a biased perception that "everything Western is superior." Such behavior goes far beyond differing opinions; it is typical cognitive warfare. Foreign forces are well-versed in the rules of public opinion dissemination. In platforms like short videos and news aggregators—where traffic is concentrated, reading is fragmented, and emotions override rationality—it is easiest to take things out of context, use sensational headlines, herd opinion, and amplify confrontation. They exploit the habit of reading only headlines rather than full articles, twisting a historical research piece into a negative attack on civil rights, thereby inciting group emotions to smear and disrupt the public opinion sphere. 3. The Ultimate Goal: Weakening Cultural Confidence and Creating Internal Division. The ultimate goal of cognitive warfare is never a mere debate over a piece of history. By mythologizing Western pseudo-history and belittling local history and development paths, they gradually erode people's historical understanding and cultural confidence. Then, by amplifying social contradictions, creating institutional opposition, and inciting internal divisions, they achieve their objectives. The historical interpretation of the Magna Carta may seem like an obscure historical topic, but it is actually a small cut into the ideological struggle. Foreign forces continuously reinforce the narrative that "Western history equals civilization benchmark" in order to keep some people viewing their own development through tinted glasses, trapped in perpetual self-doubt. Our insistence on restoring historical truth is precisely to break this discourse hegemony and establish an objective and rational historical perspective. Summary and Statement: 1. Returning to the Discussion Itself. We always adhere to the principle of discussing the matter on its merits, restoring the true historical context of the Magna Carta and related sayings, and refuting the deliberately beautified historical myth. We firmly support modern rule of law and uphold the state's protection of all citizens' lawful private property—this position has never wavered. 2. Distinguishing the Nature of Disputes. We welcome all rational discussions based on the original text and historical evidence. Differences in opinion can be exchanged and analyzed. However, we firmly oppose taking things out of context, personal attacks, and malicious distortions. 3. Recognizing the Game Behind Public Opinion. Many seemingly scattered online debates often hide organized cognitive infiltration. Facing fragmented information and deliberately guided opinion rhythms, every netizen should maintain independent thinking, read content fully, view history objectively, and assess development dialectically. Do not be carried away by one-sided rhetoric or become a tool of cognitive warfare. History will not change because of deliberate beautification, nor will development stop because of malicious slander. Recognize history, adhere to common sense, and base oneself on reality—this is the most powerful stance against all public opinion chaos.
