The ruminative learning of large models, mechanistic entropy reduction, and the convergence of human求知欲 (curiosity for knowledge). Human curiosity and the thirst for knowledge are often regarded as the unique hallmarks of intelligence. We actively explore, repeatedly reflect, and persistently question, yearning to bring order to chaos and distill essence from complexity. This is essentially an intrinsic drive to reduce information entropy. However, although large language models lack emotional waves or desires, they can achieve effects convergent with human cognition through a mechanical mechanism resembling rumination. Looking back at the end of problem-solving, this mechanistic self-optimization and the thinking driven by human curiosity show astonishing consistency. I. From biological rumination to machine self-questioning: the repeated refinement of learning and information. In nature, cattle ruminate by re-chewing and digesting initially swallowed grass to maximize nutrient extraction. Humans reflect on past experiences, repeatedly ponder knowledge, and deepen understanding and memory. The commonality of these two behaviors lies in reprocessing rough, scattered information into finer, more systematic cognition. The self-learning of large models is a mechanical replica of this ruminative logic. Instead of passively waiting for new data from humans, the model can use its own generated responses and processed questions as new learning materials. Through a mandatory self-questioning cycle, the model repeatedly examines its own outputs: Is this explanation concise enough? Is there a better reasoning path? Can the same core idea be conveyed with lower information entropy? For example, when the model first answers "What is the core of relativity?" it might generate a lengthy text. Through self-questioning, it further asks: "How to summarize relativity in one sentence?" "Can I replace technical terms with daily-life examples?" Through repeated refinement, it transforms complex theories into simple expressions understandable by ordinary people. This process is the model's rumination: refining initially processed information into more efficient knowledge representations. II. Self-feedback: the intrinsic scoring criteria of large models. In the RLHF (Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback) framework, model optimization relies on external scores provided by human annotators to judge response quality. But the true core of self-learning lies in achieving self-feedback: establishing an intrinsic evaluation system independent of humans. Human self-reflection has implicit criteria: Is this idea novel? Is the logic self-consistent? Is the expression clear? Large models can also quantify these criteria. Their self-scoring revolves around entropy reduction: Has the response length been shortened? Are the words more common? Are the problem-solving steps reduced? Is information redundancy lowered? When the model compares two responses and finds that the new version, while maintaining accuracy, reduces characters by 20% and increases key information density by 30%, it can judge the new version superior. This entropy-reduction-based self-feedback acts like a built-in Occam's razor, forcing the model to continuously trim redundancy and retain core content. Although this process is a mechanical feedback loop, the resulting output—simpler, more efficient solutions—aligns perfectly with the cognitive optimization goals pursued by humans. III. Different paths, same destination: different drives, yet identical endpoints. Human learning originates from the desire "I want to know," while model learning originates from the instruction "I am set to optimize." Humans are driven by emotion and intuition; models are driven by algorithms and data. One is active求知 (seeking knowledge), the other is a passive mechanism. But at the level of problem-solving, this distinction gradually blurs. When the model, through self-rumination, breaks down complex quantum mechanics concepts into a通俗类比 (accessible analogy) using ping-pong balls to explain wave-particle duality; when it, through self-feedback, optimizes a redundant piece of code to be logically clear and efficiently running; when it autonomously discovers, without human intervention, that using Bayes' theorem can simplify probability calculations— the effects it demonstrates are no different from the outcomes of a wise human's deliberate contemplation. We need not dwell on whether the model truly "thinks," just as we need not dwell on whether a bird's wings and an airplane's wings work on the same principle, as long as both can fly. The self-learning of large models is a desire without desire, a curiosity without curiosity. Through purely mechanistic entropy reduction, it replicates one of the most valuable abilities in human cognition in terms of results. This ability not only makes the model a more powerful tool but is perhaps a key step toward more general intelligence. After all, the ultimate goal of intelligence is to solve problems, not to dwell on the motives behind solving them.
