Tactics of attacking the enemy's rear 英文的 I Love You 藏在 Stay With Me 里。

The conceptual revolution of large language models: beyond the potential, the unavoidable linguistic entanglements. Realizing in the cool breeze of Yun Dang Lake that large models learn concepts rather than language is an important calibration of the essence of intelligence. But when we return from the ideal conceptual universe to the real world of language, we find that the language-independent beautiful vision in Meta's paper still needs to pass through a fog called language specificity. This may be the core reason why it has not yet sparked widespread public discussion. 1. Concepts are not equal to language, but language tags concepts. We always assume that the concept of "apple" is the same in all languages, but in reality, language subtly colors concepts. Take "Wei Wei Jiu Zhao" (Besieging Wei to Rescue Zhao). It is not just a tactical concept of attacking the enemy's rear to relieve the frontline siege; it also carries the weight of Warring States history and the rhythmic beauty of the four-character Chinese idiom. Translated into English, even if it can accurately convey "tactics of attacking the enemy's rear," the historical narrative condensed into those four characters becomes a fragment lost in the concept. Meta's Sonar achieves language independence by capturing the commonality of concepts. For example, an apple is a round, edible fruit; "Wei Wei Jiu Zhao" is a tactic. But everyday language hides too much conceptual individuality. The nostalgia of "Luo Ye Gui Gen" (falling leaves returning to roots) in Chinese, the subtlety of "mono no aware" in Japanese, and the serendipity of "serendipity" in English. These concepts are already deeply bound to the culture, rhythm, and emotion of their languages. It's like putting the same portrait in different frames. The core concept of the painting hasn't changed, but the style of the frame and the characteristics of the language have already become part of how people perceive the painting. 2. The difference in concept density in training materials conceals the model's cognitive bias. A large model's concept learning depends on the feeding of training materials. Scientific literature and professional books are concept-dense materials, like a well-balanced meal, from which the model can clearly extract universal concepts such as "force equals mass times acceleration" or "cell division." But everyday language is more like fragmented snacks. There are casual chats like "The weather is nice today" with few concepts, vague expressions like "Let's catch up sometime" that depend on context, and conceptual codes like "juejuezi" (slang for "awesome") that only specific language communities understand. When models learn concepts from massive amounts of material, they are prone to bias. They can accurately grasp the universal logic of scientific concepts, but they might misinterpret the vagueness of "catch up sometime" in Chinese as an empty polite gesture. They can understand the general meaning of "apple," but may not grasp the intimacy in "You are my little apple." These language-specific conceptual nuances are precisely the key to making models understand human subtleties. Yet they are difficult for a language-agnostic Sonar to fully capture. 3. Why is the language-independent ideal difficult to realize in industry deployment for now? Meta's paper shows us the bright prospects of concept modeling, but there are still three hurdles between the lab and real life. The first is the translation hurdle of cultural concepts. Take Tang poetry: "Raise my head to look at the bright moon." The "bright moon" is not just the concept of a "round moon"; it also carries the Chinese collective cultural memory of homesickness. To make the model understand this conceptual weight beyond language, Sonar would need to be fed massive amounts of cultural background data. But that would subtly imbue the language-independent model with specific cultural overtones, losing its universal applicability. The second is the fuzziness hurdle of everyday language. Language in daily life is rarely as conceptually clear as scientific literature; it's more often vague expressions like "I think it's okay," "Something like that." The concepts in these expressions depend on the speaker's tone, context, and even facial expressions. But Sonar can only process text or speech-to-vector representations, making it difficult to capture these non-linguistic conceptual cues. This means that even if the model learns the conceptual framework, it may miss the point in everyday conversation. The third is the cost hurdle of industry deployment. To make a model master both universal concepts and language-specific features, it would require more data and computing power than training a traditional LLM. It would need to collect concept-aligned data for over 200 languages and annotate the special meanings of concepts in each language. For companies, rather than investing huge costs in language-independent conceptual models, it's better to first optimize models for a single language. After all, users care more about whether an AI can accurately understand my Chinese complaints than whether it can express the same concept in 100 languages. 4. Don't be disappointed. The slow-paced concept revolution is actually a sign of rational progress. You might think these linguistic entanglements are slowing down the conceptual revolution of large models. But from another perspective, this slowness is a good thing. It makes us realize that intelligence is not a pure conceptual game detached from language, but a symbiosis of concepts, language, culture, and context. Meta's paper is not useless; it is ahead of its time. It is like a lamp that shows us that moving from language to concepts is the inevitable path to AGI. And the challenges of language specificity are like road signs, reminding us that true intelligence must not only capture the universal concept that an apple is a fruit, but also understand the affection in "You are my little apple." It must not only grasp the tactical logic of "Wei Wei Jiu Zhao," but also feel the historical weight in the four-character idiom. One day in the future, when we talk to an AI, it may not only say "I love you" in 100 languages, but also understand that in Chinese, "I love you" is hidden in "Drink more hot water," and in English, "I love you" is hidden in "Stay with me." Only then will the conceptual revolution truly land. And today, Meta's paper and our reflections are the first sparks of this revolution.
