This melody should only exist in the cloud—why should it descend to the mobile terminal? The ultimate predicament and destined fragmentation of AI Agent cross-ecosystem collaboration. This melody should only be heard in heaven; how often can it be enjoyed in the mortal world? AI Agent’s full-scenario intelligent collaboration is inherently a technical masterpiece rooted in the cloud, far from a mundane tune that can be easily replicated on mobile terminals or across ecosystems. From the Inject Events permission dilemma of Nubia’s M153 engineering device, to the fleeting rise and fall of startups like Menus, to the warlord-like fragmentation among Tencent, Alibaba, and ByteDance—all these phenomena point to one core truth. Cross-ecosystem AI Agent collaboration is a dead end blocked on all fronts, while the cloud-based closed loop within a giant’s own ecosystem is the only viable survival path. This article integrates the core logic, technical details, and commercial evolution from multiple rounds of dialogue, comprehensively deconstructing the predicament and fate of AI Agents—preserving key insights while forming a complete cognitive chain. I. The Starting Point: A Permission Dilemma Uncovering the Fundamental Deadlock of Cross-Ecosystem Collaboration Everything began with ByteDance and ZTE’s collaboration on the Nubia M153 engineering prototype, which attempted to use Inject Events permissions to enable cross-APP automated operations for a mobile AI Agent. From the outset, this attempt hit a triple wall of technical, compliance, and ecosystem barriers, exposing the underlying deadlock of cross-ecosystem collaboration. I-A. Mobile-Based Simulated Operations: A Complete Dead End from Technology to Logic The Inject Events permission, as the highest-level security privilege in Android, is the key to simulating user clicks, page jumps, and other cross-APP operations. But this path was doomed from the start. Permission barriers: The OS only grants this permission to system and manufacturer-signed applications. Apps like WeChat and Alipay detect abnormal operations by monitoring operation trajectories, click frequency, swipe speed, device fingerprints, system signatures, and permission lists—leading to immediate forced exits or account bans. Even a giant’s own Agent cannot be exempted on mobile, otherwise it would trigger a full-scale permission abuse crisis across the industry. Data ineffectiveness: Users’ core data—WeChat chat logs, Taobao orders, Amap itineraries—are stored on each APP’s cloud server. The mobile terminal can only access UI-displayed data, not the underlying raw data. If an Agent wants to integrate a WeChat friend’s travel plan with Amap route planning, it can only see text messages but has no way to call Amap’s itinerary database for real-time matching. Collaboration breakdown: The mobile terminals of different APPs are isolated islands of information, lacking a unified collaboration interface. Even within the Tencent ecosystem, WeChat and Amap cannot seamlessly extract a destination and automatically plan a route on mobile; users must manually copy and paste. I-B. Core Conclusion Mobile terminals are inherently not designed for cross-APP collaboration. The essence of local solutions is more hype than utility. The AI large model’s brain is not on the mobile device; it relies on massive data training and powerful computing, which a phone cannot support. What is called a local Agent is merely a remote control for the cloud model. Attempting to replace cloud-based collaboration with mobile-side simulated operations is completely putting the cart before the horse, violating the fundamental design principles of AI Agents. II. Deepening: Two Cross-Ecosystem Paths Completely Blocked—Not a Lack of Technology, but Fundamental Impossibility After the mobile path was exhausted, some pinned their hopes on open API calls to achieve cross-ecosystem collaboration. But this, too, is a dead end—blocked from all angles, including API deficiencies, performance costs, business logic, and technological maturity. II-A. Path One: Open API Calls—Inherent Flaws Plus Giant Constraints, Entirely Unable to Support Collaboration The existing open APIs of WeChat, Amap, Meituan, etc., are essentially single-function interfaces, not collaboration interfaces. Their original design ensures they cannot meet the needs of AI Agents. Extremely narrow scope: They only expose non-core, non-sensitive surface functions, such as WeChat retrieving official account articles or Meituan querying delivery status. Core data like chat records, purchase preferences, and friend relationship chains are completely blocked. An Agent trying to extract a dinner address from WeChat or match user tastes from Meituan has no way to proceed. Fragmented standards: Different APPs’ APIs have completely inconsistent data formats, call protocols, and permission requirements. WeChat addresses are strings, Amap uses latitude/longitude, Meituan uses business district IDs. The Agent must manually convert formats—inefficient and error-prone. Authorization credentials (OAuth 2.0, API keys, IP whitelists) are complex to manage; once expired, the collaboration link breaks directly. Stateless calls: APPs provide single-call, stateless responses, not supporting multi-step collaboration or context sharing. An Agent cannot implement a full workflow of checking hotels, planning routes, and ordering takeout. Each step is independent, unable to share key information like user needs or travel mode. Lack of giant incentives: Giants open APIs to empower their ecosystems and fill gaps, not to cultivate competitors. They may intentionally set barriers, adjust interface rules, or limit call quotas to destabilize cross-ecosystem collaboration. After all, AI Agent is a next-generation operating system-level opportunity, and giants will never cede core permissions. II-B. Path Two: Multi-Agent Chain Calls—A Triple Disaster of Performance, Cost, and Stability Startups like Menus attempted large models plus multiple APIs plus sub-agent chain calls. This is completely untenable in terms of technological maturity and commercial feasibility. Extremely slow response: Complex cross-ecosystem requests require sequentially calling multiple APIs plus model inference. Each step incurs network latency, totaling 10–20 seconds—unacceptable for users. High computational cost: Each API parsing and instruction generation by the large model consumes significant computing power. Cross-ecosystem requests often require multiple chain calls; the cost per operation may exceed user benefits, making it impossible for startups to profit. Poor stability: If any API call fails, authorization expires, server goes down, or a giant adjusts the interface, the entire chain breaks—and the startup has no control. Technological immaturity: Six months ago, large models’ Agent calling capabilities were still in early stages. Insufficient support for multi-task scheduling, exception handling, and context management further amplified collaboration difficulties. II-C. Core Conclusion Cross-ecosystem collaboration is like a skilled cook without ingredients—impossible to accomplish. Whether simulating user operations or calling open APIs, cross-ecosystem AI Agents face a comprehensive predicament: insufficient permissions, inadequate data, inability to collaborate, excessive costs, and poor stability. This is not a problem that technological iteration can solve but a fundamental deadlock rooted in both underlying logic and commercial interests.
