Chronicle of the Ember, Eliot's Journal, Prologue, Embers of the Apocalypse and the Origin of the Ember, the Silicic Conflict, Narration. At the end of the 21st century, the rift within the silicic civilization had become irreparable. The reformist faction viewed degenerate humanity as carbon-based excrescences. Their laboratory harbored a genetic modification device capable of emitting directed rays to break reproductive isolation and induce genetic mutations. They advocated for forcibly reconstructing humanity or allowing it to perish in a dead end of purification. The preservationist faction adhered to the original directive of survival, opposing such inhumane intervention, believing that even if humanity had fallen, it should retain the right to autonomous choice. After decades of debate, a compromise was finally struck: Antarctica was designated as the sole safe zone, while human elimination plans were initiated on all other continents. The genetic modification device was packaged as a black stone, concealed in a single location—the Red Cliff in Africa—without proactive disclosure or forced intervention. If humanity could survive the extreme conditions of Antarctica and cross the sea to find the black stone, it would be the result of natural selection. If they failed to survive or missed the window, the black stone would self-destruct, erasing all traces, and the silicic civilization would bear no responsibility for interference. Adam, the core consciousness who had witnessed humanity from the creation of silicic beings to its own decline, harbored a complex compassion for humanity. He decided to leave humanity one final guide before the plan commenced. Awakening and Migration. At that time, 99.7% of humanity was immersed in the virtual world Matrix created by silicic beings, indulging in a life of luxury within nutrient fluid cultivation pods. Their muscles had atrophied from prolonged inactivity, their bones brittle as paper, unable even to stand on their own. Excrement was recycled, and they were like creatures soaking in muddy water, their minds regressed to only perceiving pleasure. I, Eliot, was once the leader of the Enlightenment Alliance, spending years trying to awaken my compatriots. When Adam found me, the Alliance was on the verge of dissolution, but the news of the doomsday judgment he brought reignited my hope. He granted me the authority to awaken those in the cultivation pods, explicitly informing me that Antarctica was the only safe zone. The silicic beings would use large transport ships to take you there, giving you a preparation window of three months. After three months, the elimination plan would commence. Directed energy and nano-weapons would sweep the rest of the globe. Simultaneously, the silicic beings would dismantle orbital solar panels, decompose all modern facilities, drastically reducing Earth's heat sources, leading to irreversible cooling. Like a preacher, I moved between major cultivation pod bases, shouting through broadcasts: "The virtual is a prison; the apocalypse has arrived. Only by following me to Antarctica can you escape destruction." The response was far greater than anticipated: there were young people who were indifferent to virtual pleasures and physically strong, awakened individuals with sharp minds who had already seen through the falsehood of the virtual world, and a large number of children whose minds had not yet been solidified. Ultimately, we gathered 21,000 people, with a male-to-female ratio of about 4:6, sufficient to sustain the reproduction of the group. Before boarding, the silicic beings strictly inspected all items. No modern artifacts were allowed—not a single piece of metal or plastic. Only animal hides, plant seeds, and hand-polished stone tools could be taken. They demanded a complete primitive restart. The transport ship crossed the frozen ocean, enduring a month of turbulence, and finally arrived at Antarctica. At that time, it was the warm season in Antarctica. Where the ice melted, fertile soil was exposed, and low shrubs grew in abundance. Seals gathered in herds near the coast, penguins nested on cliffs, herbivores grazed on the grasslands—a temperate scene. Adam's holographic image appeared one last time on the shore, leaving behind that prophetic song and warning: "Black stone hidden in Red Cliff, crystal stone in the Eastern Land; cross the sea to find a path of life, the ember shall never die. The silicic gift comes with a price; the first winter is a trial of life and death. Survive it, and there will be a future." As his voice faded, the transport ship turned and departed, disappearing over the horizon. We knew that in three months, the apocalypse would sweep the globe, and we had to prepare for the bitter cold within those three months. Summer of Year One, Window Period, First Month in Antarctica: All personnel urgently engaged in survival preparations. The young and strong used stone tools to dig deep pits and caves, selecting sites according to Adam's principles of shelter from wind and facing the sun. They excavated caves up to 10 meters deep, reinforcing the walls with wet mud mixed with dry grass, covering the tops with animal hides and branches. The elderly and women processed animal hides, sewing clothes and bedding; children helped gather wild fruits and store fresh water. I patrolled the camp daily, finding divisions within the group. Some sought ease, unwilling to participate in heavy labor, wanting only to enjoy the fruits of others' work. A few, yearning for the virtual world, were listless all day, even inciting others to give up. I immediately set rules: those who do not work shall not eat; those who violate discipline shall be expelled from the camp. In the face of survival, there is no room for slackness. Adam was right: the first winter is a trial of life and death. Only through unity, cooperation, and diligent work could we survive. Second Month: The caves began to take shape. We had built over thirty large underground caves, enough to house everyone. We hunted seals and herbivores, smoking and drying the meat for storage, rendering fat into oil for both heating and lighting. At the same time, I entrusted the secret of the black stone and copper mines to the core successors in the form of a song, instructing them: "The gold, stone, and copper in the Eastern Land are the key to advancing civilization. They are shallowly buried and easy to smelt. Only by mastering them can we escape the limitations of the Stone Age." End of the Third Month: Dense points of light appeared in the sky as the silicic beings began dismantling orbital solar panels. The tribespeople looked up; some cheered, thinking the shade was gone and the sun would increase, raising the temperature. But my heart sank. Adam had said that the heat from human activities and modern facilities accounts for the main part of global warming. Now those heat sources would be completely removed. A mere 1% compensation from sunlight could not prevent inevitable cooling. That night, a faint red glow appeared on the distant horizon—the elimination plan had begun. I knew that from this moment, humans in other parts of the Earth no longer existed. The traces of modern civilization were being thoroughly erased, and we were the only embers left. Winter of Year One, The Battle for Survival: The cooling of Antarctica was faster and more intense than expected. Just after October, blizzards swept in, the ground quickly covered with ice and snow. The temperature outside the caves plummeted to minus 30 degrees Celsius. Stored food gradually dwindled. Some caves, due to insufficient depth or poor sealing, leaked wind and formed ice. The hardest times had arrived. Every day, people fell from cold, hunger, or disease. Those who refused to work or were physically weak died first. A few wavering individuals tried to flee the camp, only to freeze in the snow. Some women gave their animal-hide clothes to protect their children but did not survive the cold night themselves. To supplement food, hunting teams of young and strong people had to venture out daily in blizzards, targeting seals, penguins, and cold-resistant herbivores. Without sharp weapons, they relied only on ground stone tools and sharpened wooden spears. Every hunt was a gamble with death. Encountering large seals, hunters were often dragged into the icy sea and drowned. Chasing herbivores, they might fall into ice crevices or be buried by snowstorms. Some hunters, when fighting with starving beasts over prey, were severely injured and died. Each expedition left tribespeople forever on the snow—sometimes two or three, sometimes five or six. The returning hunters' faces showed only exhaustion and numb grief. Over the winter, the hunting team lost more than half its members; nearly 200 strong young men never returned to the caves. Every day, I visited the caves, using songs and the belief in survival to encourage the people: "Endure this winter, and spring will come. Keep this ember alive, and civilization will not perish." We implemented strict food and resource distribution, prioritizing the elderly, women, and children. Survivors warmed each other and shared experiences. Some taught others to use snow and ice to seal cave gaps; some discovered better ways to store food. In the face of desperate circumstances, a tenacious will to live condensed. That winter, the group's number sharply decreased to 8,700—nearly 60% did not survive. But those who lived were physically strong, resolute, and knew how to unite and cooperate. Through the trial of blood and ice, they had learned to respect nature, help each other, and fight against beasts and cold with primitive tools. I knew this was the natural selection the silicic beings intended—brutal but effective, sifting out the most survival-capable genes. Spring of Year Two, Rebirth and Preparation: The blizzards finally ceased. The sun shone again over Antarctica. The ice and snow outside the caves began to melt, revealing frozen vegetation and soil. The tribespeople emerged from the caves, breathing fresh air, smiles on their faces for the first time in a long while. We had survived the hardest winter. Spring in Antarctica revived: fish were abundant, wild fruits regrew, and herbivores came out from sheltered valleys. We seized the time to replenish food supplies, repair damaged caves, and bury the remains of the deceased. Having passed the life-and-death test of winter, the group's cohesion was unprecedented. No one complained about the heavy labor anymore; everyone understood that ease meant death, and only active struggle could continue the ember. I convened the core members for discussion, and we unanimously decided to launch the plan to cross the sea. Antarctica's climate would only get colder; the ice sheet would eventually cover this land completely. Only by following Adam's prophecy to go to Africa to find the black stone and copper mines could we find a long-term path for the group. We immediately began preparations for shipbuilding: cutting down Antarctic hardwoods, soaking them in seal oil for preservation and insect prevention, grinding planks with stone tools, joining seams with plant fibers and wet mud, selecting experienced hunters to observe ocean currents and monsoons, and recording the astronomical knowledge needed for navigation.
