In the autumn of the third year, we set sail across the sea. After a year and a half, forty wooden ships were finally built. Each ship was made of hard wood, soaked thoroughly in seal oil, sturdy enough to carry over two hundred people. Although the temperature in Antarctica had risen somewhat by then, it was noticeably lower than in the first year. The grasslands continued to shrink, and the coastline began to freeze. Time was running out for us. On the night before departure, I gathered all the clan members atop the tallest cave, gazing at the stars scattered across the sky. We are the sparks of humanity. Antarctica is our refuge, but not our permanent home. The ocean ahead is filled with storms and the unknown; the lands of Africa may be fraught with danger. Yet we have no choice. Only by crossing the sea can we find the black stone and the golden stone. Only by mastering them can our civilization endure. The clan shouted in unison, their voices piercing the night sky with the resolve of those who had burned their boats. At dawn the next day, forty wooden ships were pushed off the shore, carrying the hopes of 8,700 people into the gray-blue ocean. I stood at the bow, clutching a pebble picked up from the frozen soil of Antarctica. In my heart, I whispered: Adam, we have not betrayed your guidance. Humanity will not perish. In the fourth year, disaster struck at sea. In the fifth month of our voyage, we encountered a storm unseen in a century. Giant waves surged like mountains, and the ship planks shook violently in the gale. Several ships capsized, and over four hundred people were swallowed by the waves in an instant. Survivors clung tightly to the planks, struggling in the torrential rain. The icy seawater soaked through their animal hides. Many suffered a sharp drop in body temperature and stopped breathing in despair. After the storm, shortages of food and fresh water became a new crisis. We could only use simple fishing nets to catch marine life for sustenance, collect rainwater, or melt sea ice to drink. Some died from poisoning after eating toxic fish; others fell gravely ill from drinking unclean seawater. Every day, people collapsed during the voyage. Some clan members wept in despair; some wanted to turn back. But whenever we sang the prophetic ballad—"The black stone hides in the red cliff; the golden stone lies in the eastern land"—everyone’s fighting spirit was reignited. This voyage was another brutal selection, weeding out the cowardly, the weak, and those who gave up. Only those who truly longed to survive and were tenacious could reach the other shore. Today, we saw seabirds flying south and knew we were near the African coast. The ships were damaged in many places, and everyone was exhausted, but their eyes shone with anticipation. Standing at the bow, gazing at the faint coastline in the distance, my heart grew even firmer. The silicon-based plan was interlocking, from the survival test in Antarctica to the life-and-death ordeal of crossing the sea. Every step was designed to filter out the best genes. This was the goal of the Reformists, and the natural selection tacitly approved by the Guardians. In the winter of the fifth year, the black stone appeared. We landed on the southern coast of Africa. The red cliff stood along the shore, exactly as the prophecy foretold, matching Adam’s description without error. The clan rested at the foot of the cliff, hunted antelope, gathered tubers to replenish supplies, and repaired the damaged ships. After half a month of rest, I led five core successors deep into the cliff to search. On the afternoon of the third day, we found the black stone in a sheltered depression—a pure black cube three meters high. Its surface was smooth as a mirror, cold to the touch, with faint fluctuations of energy. It was clearly not a natural formation, but more like a precision machine. When strong sunlight struck at noon, the black stone’s surface revealed fine blue glowing lines, releasing invisible rays. When clan members approached, they all felt their strength multiply. Their hearing and vision became extraordinarily acute; they could clearly hear animal calls miles away and see the tracks of prey hundreds of meters off. I grew wary—Adam’s warning still echoed in my ears. So I ordered that no one should touch the black stone alone, and I established a restricted perimeter. This power came too easily; it must conceal a cost that the silicon-based beings had not revealed. In the spring of the sixth year, the cost emerged. The cost finally manifested half a year later. Some male clan members experienced slight mutations in their reproductive cells, and a few women had difficulty conceiving, but the overall fertility rate of the group was still acceptable. More bizarrely, after a nearby troop of chimpanzees accidentally entered the black stone’s radiation zone, they no longer feared humans. Their eyes took on an unusual glimmer, and they could even imitate our simple actions—using stone tools to crack nuts, digging up roots. At the end of the month, a young clan member went missing. Three days later, he was found sharing a cave with the mutated chimpanzees. Neither side showed aggression; instead, they shared food. I went to investigate and found that these chimpanzees were more robust and agile than ordinary individuals, clearly also affected by the black stone’s rays. Suddenly, I understood. The black stone’s sole function was genetic modification. It not only enhanced human physical abilities and perception but also broke down reproductive barriers between species. This was the cost of the silicon-based plan. The Reformists wanted to introduce the strong genes of chimpanzees to restructure the human evolutionary chain and break what they called the evolutionary dead end. The Guardians hoped that through this natural integration, they could avoid the inhumanity of direct intervention and absolve the silicon-based beings of responsibility. Adam had never stated it explicitly, but he had placed this compromise between the two silicon-based factions before us in this way. In the autumn of the eighth year, the golden stone appeared. Following the guidance of the prophetic ballad, we migrated a hundred miles east and found green-glowing ore at the foot of a red-soil mountain—the golden stone Adam spoke of: copper ore. As Adam had said, the copper here was buried very shallow, some even exposed on the surface, requiring no deep digging to obtain. The clan tried burning wood to make fire and placed the copper ore into the flames. Although the temperature of burning wood was only five or six hundred degrees, it was enough to strip impurities from the copper ore, yielding crude copper of low purity. We then groped our way to making simple furnaces from clay. By increasing the fire, we could melt the crude copper into liquid, pour it into stone molds, and forge simple copper tools. Later, someone discovered that mixing a small amount of lead-zinc ore with copper ore lowered the melting point, and the resulting tools were harder and more durable. This was the first bronze. With bronze, we crafted sharp knives, sturdy farm tools, and handy weapons. Hunting efficiency soared, farming became easier, and the clan’s living conditions improved dramatically. I finally understood Adam’s deeper meaning. The silicon-based civilization had long calculated that humans under primitive conditions could only achieve the temperature of burning wood. So they deliberately chose these shallow, low-melting-point copper ores to pave the way for the advancement of civilization. In other parts of the earth, copper ore was either buried deep or required higher temperatures to smelt. Those groups that failed to find this copper ore would remain trapped in the Stone Age, unable to achieve a civilizational breakthrough. This was another layer of selection by the silicon-based civilization. In the winter of the tenth year, the foundation of civilization was laid. We settled down at the red-soil mountain, cleared land for planting crops, used bronze tools for hunting and labor, and built sturdier ground-level houses to replace the caves. The clan grew steadily, expanding from the 7,000+ who landed to over 20,000. The advantages of the hybrid descendants became increasingly evident. They possessed both human intelligence and the robust physique of chimpanzees. They learned quickly, adapted well to the environment, mastered bronze smelting and tool use rapidly, and were far better at fending off wild beasts than pure humans. We established a simple clan system: experienced elders made decisions, able-bodied adults hunted and worked, women farmed and raised children, and children learned language, songs, and survival skills. Human civilization had finally taken root again on the red soil of southern Africa. In the winter of the thirteenth year, on my deathbed, I had an epiphany. I was nearly sixty, my body weakening day by day, my sight and hearing failing. I entrusted the chronicle to the most intelligent successor, instructing him: the black stone is the silicon-based gene modifier; the copper ore is the cornerstone of civilization. We have won the battle for survival and paid the price. Now, we must continue the spark on our own. Never forget the struggles of our ancestors on the Antarctic ice sheet or the disasters at sea. On my deathbed, lying in the house on the red-soil mountain, gazing at the sunlight outside the cave, I finally fully grasped the truth that Adam had left unspoken. The Reformists wanted to modify human genes, break the evolutionary dead end, and make humans more efficient intelligent beings. The Guardians opposed forced intervention, insisting that humans retain the right to choose for themselves. The black stone was the compromise of this conflict. Disguised as a medicine of civilization, it made humans actively accept genetic modification in their desperate situation and naturally drew chimpanzees into the integration. This achieved the Reformists’ genetic restructuring while preserving the Guardians’ moral底线. And the location of the copper ore was a critical part of the silicon-based plan: only providing easily smelted veins ensured that only groups that passed layer upon layer of selection could master metal technology and advance civilization. Groups in other regions that failed the selection would remain in the primitive stage, unable to interfere with the chosen groups. The silicon-based civilization never truly cared about our survival. If we had not survived the Antarctic winter, or failed to cross the ocean and find the black stone and copper ore, we would have gone extinct in despair, and the earth would have been reinitialized. If we succeeded, it was merely a naturally occurring evolutionary experiment, unrelated to them, absolving them of the blame for intervention. Adam’s lament was the only warm footnote in this cold experiment. May future generations know: we are not the product of natural evolution, but sparks guided by the silicon-based and tempered by cost. This continuation carries the struggles and sacrifices of our ancestors, as well as the cold calculations of an interstellar civilization. When human civilization grows strong enough to uncover the truth of the black stone, may we judge this million-year intervention on equal terms—whether it was redemption or another form of control. But before that, we must protect this hard-won spark, making it thrive on every inch of the earth. The chronicle breaks off here. At the end, there is an inscription carved in bronze: "Survival, Selection, Inheritance."
