Panmen and Zhonghua Gate are two distinctly different ancient city defense paradigms. Both Suzhou Panmen and Nanjing Zhonghua Gate are well-preserved ancient city gates in Jiangnan, representing two entirely different city defense concepts. Suzhou Panmen is a dual water-land barbican. The most unique feature of Panmen is that the complete land defense system and water defense system are set up in pairs. The land gate is divided into two independent gates: the outer land gate and the inner land gate. An open-air barbican is enclosed between the two gates. In wartime, the garrison will first let the enemy break through the first outer gate, lure them into the open courtyard of the barbican, then immediately lower the thousand-jin counterweight gate of the outer gate to cut off their retreat. The enemy trapped in the open area is under attack from all sides and fully exposed to the firepower from the city wall, which is the typical tactic of catching turtles in a jar. If the garrison fails to defeat the enemy in the barbican, the thousand-jin gate of the inner land gate serves as the second blockade barrier. The layout of the water gate is exactly the same as that of the land gate. A water-based barbican is formed between the outer water gate and the inner water gate, which can not only intercept enemy naval warships, but also regulate the water level of the canal, integrating military and water conservancy functions. Two gates are placed at the two ends of the barbican, and the core of the trap is an open enclosed space. Nanjing Zhonghua Gate adopts a design of multiple gates and a deep longitudinal corridor. Zhonghua Gate does not take the approach of building solid defense around open space. It has no open-air barbican, and its main body is a long, narrow and deep brick-stone corridor. Three thousand-jin gate slots and four city gates are arranged consecutively inside the corridor. Once the enemy rushes into the passage, the garrison can lower the gates one after another, divide the long corridor into several closed spaces, cut the invading troops into several segments and annihilate them section by section. Its trap is a closed and narrow passage, which uses the narrow space to disrupt the army's formation and weaken its maneuverability. To briefly summarize the tactical difference between the two: Panmen lures the enemy into an open courtyard to encircle and kill them, while Zhonghua Gate draws the enemy into a narrow corridor to intercept and kill them. Neither design is superior to the other. They just evolved according to different terrains and different combat expectations.
