The ultimate dividing line between genuine and fake AI Agents: planable or unplanable? The underlying revolution from traditional software to true intelligent agents. Recently, a very sharp viewpoint has emerged in the industry: AI Agent is not an independent赛道 at all. Many people feel颠覆 after hearing it, yet cannot articulate the underlying reasons clearly. Some say it's a shell, some say it's a transitional phase, some say it's time-arbitrage, but very few can thoroughly explain this from the底层 task structure. Today's article will彻底 clarify this using a completely self-consistent, verifiable, and implementable theoretical framework. What is a fake Agent? What is a true Agent? What is software upgrade? What is an intelligence revolution? What will eventually disappear? What is the future? This framework does not come from industry reports, not from capital rhetoric, but from the most fundamental decomposition of the essence of tasks. First, back to the origin: there are only two types of complex tasks in the world. Let's set aside all AI concepts and return to the simplest question. All long-term complex tasks that humans need to solve and continuously execute fall into only two categories. The first category: complex tasks that can be precisely defined, regularized, and reproduced. The characteristics of this type are very clear: clear problem boundaries, definite input and output, quantifiable goals, algorithms that can be written for logic, and results that can be stably reproduced. Examples include scheduling systems, maze searching, path planning, computation-intensive algorithms, and even a large number of NP-complete problems. Their complexity is extremely high, but the complexity only comes from how the code is written, not from the problem being indescribable. Traditional software is the absolute king in this type of task. The role of large models is only to accelerate code generation, reduce development costs, and improve efficiency. It does not change the essence of the task; it just makes software development faster, cheaper, and more powerful. This category is the home ground of traditional software, never the home ground of AI Agents. The second category: fuzzy tasks with blurred boundaries, unregularizable, and unenumerable. Humans are good at this type of task, but traditional software can hardly do it well, or even cannot do it at all. Examples include natural language understanding, speech recognition, face recognition, fuzzy intent judgment, open-ended reasoning, common-sense decision-making, and complex environment adaptation. Their common feature is that you cannot exhaust all situations with if-else. You cannot precisely define input and output, you cannot write fixed rules. You cannot quantify the value of each step, and you certainly cannot write all possibilities into the program in advance. Forcing it would lead to a hell of millions or billions of rules, which is completely infeasible in engineering. Only large models can solve this type of task, because large models essentially fit a super implicit function using data, replacing the rules that humans cannot write. This is the new world that AI truly enters, and the much-hyped AI Agent in the industry has all its value and controversy concentrated in this type of task. Second, the real watershed: the qualitative change line within the second type of task. Most people's misunderstanding of Agent comes from a fatal mistake. They treat the second type of task as a whole, but fail to see a insurmountable qualitative change line hidden inside it. This line is whether the task can be pre-planned, whether the process can be fixed, and whether the stage goals are predictable. Based on this line, the second type of task is clearly divided into Type A and Type B. They are not a quantitative change in the number of model calls, but a qualitative change in who controls the process and who defines the future. Third, Type A of the second type: planable fuzzy tasks, the AI-upgraded version of traditional software. We define it as: overall planable, process fixable, goals quantifiable, with only a few nodes requiring the model to handle fuzzy problems. Its core features are very clear: 1) The final goal is clear, measurable, and verifiable. 2) The execution path can be pre-decomposed and pre-planned. 3) Stage goals are fixed and predictable. 4) Most logic is still controlled by traditional software. 5) The model is only called as a function APP at a few nodes. 6) Success or failure can be clearly judged. Typical representatives are the hottest automation Agents in the industry: OpenClaw, RPA+AI, process-oriented tool calls, batch speech-to-text, document summarization, etc. Their value is very real: they extend the capability boundary of traditional software to the fuzzy problem domain for the first time. In the past, traditional software did not touch NLP, understanding, or intent judgment; now, through model plugins, it can do them. This is a huge progress in the software industry, an upgrade with high practical value. But it is still not an Agent, because its skeleton, process, control power, and goal system all belong to traditional software. The model is just a stronger function; humans are still secretly defining everything, planning everything, and ruling everything. Therefore, the industry says it is a transitional form, time-arbitrage, which is essentially correct. It is not intelligence; it is software plus AI plugins. Fourth, Type B of the second type: unplanable fuzzy tasks, the only true AI Agent. Now we come to the most core and profound part of the entire theory. Type B tasks are defined as: cannot be pre-planned, no fixed process, stage goals change dynamically, each step requires re-evaluation and decision-making, and the model must become the central decision-maker throughout the process. Its characteristics are: 1) The final goal may be fixed, but the path is completely unpredictable. 2) Stage goals are adjusted at any time and change dynamically. 3) The process cannot be hard-coded, and branches cannot be enumerated. 4) Each step requires re-judging how far from the goal. 5) Each step relies on fuzzy reasoning, context memory, and environmental adaptation. 6) The model is the brain; traditional software is only responsible for input/output and execution. 7) No preset skills, no fixed scripts, no predefined routines. The most classic and precise examples are two. The first is AlphaGo's Go decision-making. Go cannot be solved by traditional search or computation because the value of each step cannot be precisely quantified. It must rely on a value network to evaluate the situation in real time and a policy network to choose the next move in real time. The process cannot be planned, the path cannot be predicted, and each step is a new decision. The second is MUD open-ended maze exploration: players interact in natural language, the environment changes dynamically, goals are fuzzy, paths are unpredictable, and each step requires understanding, reasoning, memory, and decision-making. You cannot write all branches in advance because the world is open. For this type of task, traditional software completely fails: you cannot write rules, processes, judgments, or value evaluations. The only solution is to let the model become the subject. That is the true AI Agent. Fifth: The essential difference between Type A and Type B is not quantitative but qualitative. Many people will misunderstand: Type A occasionally calls the model, Type B calls the model throughout. This is a very shallow understanding. The real difference is only one sentence: Type A: software plans everything; the model is just a plugin. Type B: the model controls everything; software is just hands and feet. Further condensed: if a process can be written in advance, no matter how complex, it is still software. Only when the process cannot be written and each step requires re-judgment is it intelligence. This is the ultimate dividing line between fake and true Agents. Sixth, back to industry judgment: 99% of Agents are Type A, only 1% are Type B. After reading this framework, when you look at the entire AI industry today, it will become clear instantly. All Agents with skill markets, script libraries, process templates are Type A; all that can be drawn into flowcharts by product managers are Type A; all with fixed tasks, fixed scenarios, fixed goals are Type A; all relying on API calls, node triggers, function encapsulation are Type A. They are valuable, useful, and commercializable, but they are not true intelligent agents. They are extensions of traditional software, transitional forms, and will continuously be integrated, replaced, and converged by underlying systems. What truly belongs to the future is Type B: open world, dynamic goals, continuous decision-making, long context, autonomous reasoning, unplanable, unpredictable. It is not an upgrade of software; it is the birth of intelligence. Seventh, final conclusion: Agent is not a赛道; unplanability is the future. We can end this in-depth analysis with three sentences. 1) The first type of task: traditional software's home ground; large models are just efficiency tools. 2) The second type Type A: traditional software plus AI plugin; valuable but not an Agent. 3) The second type Type B: unplanable fuzzy tasks; the only true AI Agent. The industry says there is no AI Agent赛道, which is both right and wrong. Right: Type A is indeed not a赛道, just software upgrade. Wrong: Type B is not only a赛道, but the ultimate future of AI. Future intelligence will not live in processes, not in rules, not in presets. It lives in the open, dynamic, fuzzy, unplanable, unpredictable real world. What can be planned will eventually be written by software; what cannot be planned belongs to the true AI Agent.
