Breaking the Genesis anxiety: Why can 140 PB of data plus top-tier AI not become a research hegemony? Decoding the infeasibility behind the aggressive momentum, dispelling the myth that data equals victory. I. Background: Why the Genesis Project's hardcore deterrence far exceeds that of the Stargate Project. When it comes to the Genesis Project, the sense of oppression it brings to the global research community far exceeds that of the previously announced $500 billion Stargate Project in the United States. The former is a real threat of "cooking with rice," while the latter is a bluff of infrastructure-first layout. The core difference between the two is the root of this anxiety. The core of the Stargate Project is the construction of computing centers, essentially building research infrastructure. Having top-tier computing power without exclusive high-precision data support is like building a super luxury kitchen without top-quality ingredients—ultimately a "cooking without rice," with deterrence remaining at the hardware level. In contrast, the Genesis Project combines the U.S. Department of Energy's hundreds of laboratories' century-long research accumulation—the "bottom-of-the-chest" dry goods—140 PB of high-precision research data, deeply integrated with top AI teams such as DeepMind and OpenAI, following a combination strategy of existing core data + top AI capability + century-long research accumulation. It should be noted that the training of current mainstream large models has already exhausted public materials like open internet texts and general knowledge, hitting a bottleneck of "no rice to cook." The 140 PB of data held by the Genesis Project covers exclusive high-precision data in fields such as cutting-edge physics, biomedicine, and high-end manufacturing—research stock assets that the vast majority of countries cannot access. Combined with hundreds of top U.S. laboratories, tens of thousands of supercomputers, and a technical system沉淀ed by generations of researchers, this combination of data + computing power + human capital is not a bluff but solid research strength. More alarmingly, although the U.S. does not have enough direct financial investment, it leverages policies like the big science act, using tax credits and policy preferences to bring in tech giants like Nvidia and OpenAI. Internally, OpenAI is even advancing a mysterious project codenamed "Strawberry," attempting to break through AI deep research and reasoning capabilities. Its undisclosed technical progress has further amplified anxiety. This model of "tax cuts in exchange for investment" deeply binds corporate computing power, hidden technologies, and national core data. It seems without spending huge sums, but achieves efficient integration of core resources, making the deterrence of the Genesis Project tangible. No wonder it triggers deep concerns about being instantly left behind. II. Core Question: Can holding 140 PB of core data plus top-tier AI directly produce groundbreaking research results? The answer is unquestionably: absolutely impossible. Even if the Genesis Project possesses a century of accumulated data and top AI tools, it cannot escape the four hard constraints: data cleaning cost barriers, logic closure, and human dominance. The so-called "data + AI = research hegemony" is merely a cognitive misunderstanding after amplifying anxiety. The "dimensionality reduction attack" we fear is actually a paper tiger that can be deconstructed and countered. This will be analyzed layer by layer from two dimensions: feasibility and core logic. III. First Deconstruction: Feasibility Barriers — 140 PB of data must first pass the cleaning and cost hurdles. Both are astronomical challenges. The core confidence of the Genesis Project lies in 140 PB of high-precision data. But this "dry goods" comes with two unsolvable prerequisite problems from the start, making it difficult to even make the data truly usable, let alone produce results. 1. Data First: 140 PB of uncleaned data equals 140 PB of research garbage. Separating the wheat from the chaff is itself an impossible task. The core logic of AI training is: input high-quality data, output high-quality capabilities; conversely, garbage in, garbage out — this is an irreversible underlying law. The 140 PB of data in the Genesis Project is a century-long accumulation from hundreds of U.S. laboratories. It is by no means well-organized, high-quality training material. It is mixed with experimental data from different eras and equipment: error data with inconsistent measurement standards, invalid conclusions that have not been replicated, redundant data from cross-domain repeated records, and contradictory data from different research teams and directions. To make this data valuable for training or inference, the first step is to perform deep scientific-grade cleaning. This requires unifying data standards, removing invalid and redundant data, annotating core parameters, identifying contradictory data, and having top domain researchers define effective data thresholds. Completing this step alone is not a technical task but a scientific one. For 140 PB of data, even gathering the world's top research teams in the field, the screening, annotation, and integration of core data would take several years or even more than a decade. During this period, continuous human investment is required; it is by no means a one-click cleaning process. If cleaning is skipped and the data is fed directly, the resulting model will be a contradictory waste, unable to perform even basic data analysis, let alone achieve research breakthroughs. 2. Cost Chasm: Whether inference or training, it is a bottomless money pit. Computing power and time simply cannot bear it. Even if the data cleaning problem is bypassed, the combination of 140 PB data and AI will hit a chasm of cost and time. Neither inference mode nor training mode is feasible. (1) Inference mode: The context window is a fatal flaw — it cannot even read the full amount. The current context window limit of the world's most powerful models can only accommodate millions of tokens, which translates to tens of thousands of lines of research data. For 140 PB of data, it's like using a cup of water to handle an entire reservoir. The data can only be split into countless fragments and fed one by one. Not to mention that the splitting process severs the connections between data — which is precisely the core of research. Just parallel inference would take years. The single inference cost of GPT-4 level is at the lowest, but scaled to 140 PB, the total cost would skyrocket to hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars. Moreover, the output is mostly fragmented, unrelated analyses with no research value. (2) Training mode: Computing power and time are astronomical, and catastrophic forgetting is unsolvable. According to calculations using top-tier H100 GPU computing power, a single round of training on 1 PB of high-quality annotated research data requires thousands of GPUs running continuously for months, costing over ten million dollars. Training 140 PB of data would require at least 140,000 H100 GPUs running nonstop for 1-2 years. The hardware rental and electricity costs alone would reach tens of billions of dollars. No institution in the world can mobilize such a scale of idle computing power. More critically, catastrophic forgetting in large models cannot be avoided. Feeding all 140 PB of data would directly overwrite the model's existing general reasoning capabilities. Complex techniques such as parameter isolation and knowledge distillation are required, further increasing training difficulty and time cost. It is not as simple as feeding data in and the model becomes stronger.
