Tesla is a cross-boundary player trapped between low-level intelligence and the ambition of large models. The essence of Tesla's AI strategy is to use autonomous driving as its foundation, attempting to break into the realm of human-vehicle interaction intelligence through the XAI Grok large model. However, the core contradiction it faces is that the technical threshold of its main battlefield—autonomous driving—is being diluted. In the new track of large models, it lacks core competitiveness, finding itself in an awkward position where it can retreat but cannot hold its ground, and can advance but cannot break through. First, advantages: It has a hardware-based foundation and the potential for scenario闭环 (closed-loop). The data barrier of autonomous driving scenarios is difficult to break in the short term. Although autonomous driving relies on traditional visual recognition rather than large models, Tesla has accumulated massive real-world road data through millions of vehicles on the road. This is the core asset for training low-level intelligence in obstacle recognition and path planning. In the short term, it is difficult for other automakers to catch up quickly, allowing Tesla to hold its ground in vehicle control intelligence. The potential of the vehicle-plus-AI closed-loop scenario: Cars are naturally suited as AI interaction carriers. Users have strong demands for navigation, shopping, entertainment, etc., inside the vehicle. If Tesla can deeply integrate the Grok large model with its in-vehicle system—for example, using natural language dialogue to control vehicle functions and recommend travel services— it could theoretically create a closed-loop scenario from driving to services, giving it an edge over pure large-model companies by having a hardware deployment scenario. Second, disadvantages: Dual shortcomings on both tracks. On the main battlefield, the technological moat of autonomous driving is becoming shallower. Tesla’s autonomous driving relies on vision plus traditional algorithms, a technological route that does not require large models. But this also means lower barriers. Chinese automakers, such as BYD and XPeng, are rapidly catching up in visual recognition data accumulation. Moreover, they have advantages in cost control and local scenario adaptation (e.g., complex road conditions, policy compliance). Tesla’s moat in hardware integration is being diluted, and its competitive disadvantage in manufacturing will directly impact its foundation. On the new track, there is an inherent deficiency in the large model field. The positioning of the Grok large model is to serve human-vehicle interaction. But the survival logic of the large model industry is extremely head-heavy, with the top three players taking the vast majority of the market. Tesla lacks the core capabilities required for large models: it does not have the technical heritage of Google or Microsoft (e.g., Transformer architecture accumulation), nor does it have the developer ecosystem of Meta or OpenAI, and it even lacks sufficient computing infrastructure. The Dojo supercomputer primarily serves autonomous driving, not large model training. Currently, Grok is more like an upgraded version of an in-vehicle voice assistant, far from reaching the level of top-tier large models. It will be difficult for it to replace products like ChatGPT or ERNIE Bot in users' perceptions. Third, possible development paths and risks. Either hold onto the scenario, or be completely marginalized. Short-term path: Double down on the combination of autonomous driving and small in-vehicle models, abandoning the fantasy of becoming a first-class general-purpose large model. Optimize Grok into a vehicle-specific small model—for example, focusing on understanding the car owner’s intent, such as "help me plan a shopping route that avoids traffic jams." Link it with vehicle functions, such as voice-controlled seats and air conditioning. Use scenario specificity to compensate for insufficient general capability, maintaining a small closed-loop of human-vehicle interaction. Long-term risk: If XAI does not achieve a breakthrough, the foundation will be gradually eroded. If Grok never reaches a top-tier level, Tesla will remain trapped in the realm of low-level intelligence. If Chinese automakers catch up in autonomous driving and in-vehicle interaction lacks differentiation, Tesla will degrade from a tech company to an ordinary automaker, losing pricing power. Conversely, if it forcefully increases investment in XAI, it will face the dilemma of large models burning cash with no returns, further dragging down performance. In simple terms, Tesla's core problem is that it wants to achieve high-level intelligence, but it only has the cards for low-level intelligence. If it cannot win the large model battle, it may eventually become a hardware assembler squeezed by Chinese automakers, completely losing its competitiveness in the AI era.
