The truth behind the Stele of King Yu is a fabricated heavenly mandate scam that has persisted for eight hundred years. Stripping away the层层 accretions of epigraphic research, what has been hailed as the mysterious Stele of King Yu, supposedly carved by Yu the Great himself, was never a primordial celestial text. Instead, it is a completely self-consistent man-made miracle. Its underlying logic is identical to that of the Stone Stele of the 108 heroes in *Water Margin*, the frequent changes of era names and the creation of auspicious omens in ancient dynasties, and all later practices of using heavenly mandates to establish order and resolve disputes. **1. The Inherent Flaws of the Stele of King Yu.** From historical records and textual evidence, this stele cannot withstand any rigorous scrutiny. For nearly three thousand years, from the pre-Qin, Han, Wei-Jin, and Tang dynasties, no official history, classic texts, geographical records, or local gazetteers mention the existence of this stone carved by Yu the Great controlling the floods on Mount Heng. It was not until the fifth year of the Jiading era of the Southern Song Dynasty (1212 CE) that a literatus named He Zhi claimed to have discovered the ancient stele on the inaccessible Summit Pillar Peak (Zhurong Feng) after being directed by a Mount Heng woodcutter. He then made a rubbing and had it carved on Yuelu Mountain, and only then did the Stele of King Yu come to light. Furthermore, the so-called "tadpole and bird script" is riddled with inconsistencies. It does not conform to the embryonic script forms of the Xia Dynasty, nor does it have a rigorous paleographic lineage with Shang and Zhou oracle bone script, Western and Eastern Zhou bronze inscriptions, or the southern Chu-Yue bird-worm script. The strokes are deliberately twisted and coiled, intentionally made illegible. Even a top paleographer like Guo Moruo, after three years of study, could only barely identify three characters. This was never because the ancient script was too profound; rather, from its inception, this script lacked a fixed semantic system. From the start, there was no objective standard for interpretation; whatever the interpreter claimed a character to be, it became. As long as one could piece together a narrative of Yu taming the floods and achieving eternal merit, forced interpretations sufficed. It is like oddly shaped rocks in the mountains: someone says it looks like Ashima or a celestial being or strange beast, and as others echo, it becomes a timeless scenic spot. At its core, it is all subjective projection. **2. All Man-Made Miracles Exist to Resolve the Most Intractable Human Conflicts.** This tactic of feigning heavenly mandates has never been isolated; from ancient times to the present, its core remains unchanged. Consider the Liangshan stone stele in *Water Margin*. Ranking the heroes was the most insoluble deadlock for any rebel group. Who joined earlier? Who had greater military merit? Who had more connections? Who contributed more wealth? Who shed blood and was wounded for Liangshan? Every account was impossible to settle, and every rank harbored the seeds of discontent and division. Song Jiang's solution was extremely clever: he had the sage scribe Xiao Rang write the text in advance and the jade-armed craftsman Jin Dajian secretly carve it on stone. The names, constellations, and positions of all 108 men were pre-carved and buried underground. Then, by claiming a celestial omen, they unearthed a stone stele inscribed with unreadable celestial script in public. This directly transformed earthly disputes over interests, merits, and seniority into a destiny preordained by heaven. Mortals need not argue, nor dare to question; with the heavenly mandate fixed, order was thus secured. Consider also your mention of the frequent changes of reign titles in successive dynasties. Whenever an ancient regime was unstable, with public morale unsettled and the legitimacy of its rule challenged, its most common tactic was to change the era name, create miracles, or produce auspicious omens. Using celestial phenomena or ancient prophetic talismans to prove that one's rule conforms to Heaven's will served to suppress doubts, win over hearts, and consolidate orthodox status. This logic even transcends eras and remains unchanged. Even in the modern era, after wars, the assessment of military ranks cannot escape this dilemma. A host of battle-hardened heroes, each with their own merits, experiences, and followers, will never be fully satisfied with any ranking or award. Even if revolutionaries possess a consciousness and vision far surpassing old times, conflicts and controversies objectively persist. Ultimately, it still requires the top authority to make the final call, using universally recognized top-level credibility to end endless disputes over merits and internal strife. **3. The Essence of the Stele of King Yu: A Tool for Forced Interpretation and Power Order.** The entire value of the Stele of King Yu has never lain in the text itself. Why did a stele of Yu the Great suddenly appear out of nowhere in the Southern Song Dynasty? At that time, Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucianism flourished, venerating antiquity and the sages, and extolling kingly virtue and merit was the trend of the age. An indecipherable ancient stele of Yu the Great could simultaneously elevate the cultural status of Mount Heng and Yuelu Academy, and also use the flood-control achievements of the ancient sage-king Yu to educate the people, promote orthodox morality, and strengthen social order. All subsequent interpretations are essentially subjective forced interpretations. The so-called "tadpole script" has no dictionary, no grammar, and no contemporary textual corroboration. Interpreters did not need rigorous paleographic analysis; they only needed to align with the theme of Yu taming the floods and pacifying the world, freely matching characters and piecing together meanings. It is like naming oddly shaped rocks or giving stories to mirages: you can interpret it however you wish. It can never be falsified, and there will never be a standard answer. For eight hundred years, countless literati, officials, and scholars have endorsed it, written poems about it, reproduced, and restored it—not because they understood the text, but because everyone tacitly agreed to believe in the story. An ancient stele that no one can comprehend, once endowed with the sacred aura of a sage-king's heavenly mandate and merit, acquires real-world power of order and spiritual appeal. **4. The Ultimate Truth: The Stele of King Yu Is Not a Xia Dynasty Relic, Nor Does It Contain Any Lost Ancient Secrets.** It is most likely a pseudo-ancient stone carving fabricated out of thin air by some meddlesome person in the Southern Song Dynasty. Using deliberately contrived bizarre script, they created the illusion of a heavenly mandate, divine craftsmanship, and ancient transmission, serving the practical purposes of education, orthodoxy, and order. What is called a celestial text, tadpole script, or Yu's personal carving was from start to finish a mature technique of social governance: when the rankings, interests, and conflicts among people cannot be resolved by worldly reasoning, one invokes an unquestionable heaven, ancient sage, or miracle to set the tone. Mortal arguments may be unending, but the heavenly mandate is beyond question. Human judgments are always controversial, but celestial texts are never wrong. And those mysterious symbols, forever impossible to verify precisely and forever open to arbitrary interpretation, are the perfect medium for this technique. Truth or falsehood has never mattered; as long as people's hearts are willing to believe, it will endure for a thousand years.
