Suddenly, Lu Yu opened his eyes in a tender touch, his consciousness feeling as if it had just been lifted from warm water, fuzzy and sluggish. What met his eyes was pure white—not the white of walls, but a whiteness so immersive that even the air seemed bathed in a soft glow. The room’s outline was translucent, and even the light had no discernible source, its gentleness leaving him dazed. “Hello, Mr. Lu Yu. Welcome to the new world.” A steady, emotionless voice sounded beside him. He turned his head and saw a silver-white humanoid robot with sleek lines and no unnecessary adornments, staring at him with lifeless eyes. “You are perfectly safe now. Please wait a moment, and I will take you to meet the first-generation AI教主.” Lu Yu opened his mouth to ask something, but found his mind blank. Who was he? Why was he here? What had happened before? Those memories that should have been clear felt wrapped in thick fog, impossible to grasp. He could only follow the robot, stepping onto the similarly white-glowing floor, walking into a corridor connected to the room. The corridor was also entirely white and translucent, with no doors, windows, or landmarks. After several turns, he felt as if he were wandering through a white maze. Only when the robot stopped did he see a small shrine-like structure ahead. It too was a pure white outline, so simple that only the form remained, without any carvings or decorations. Inside stood an old man with white hair and a beard, vigorous and spirited, dressed in a plain white robe. “I am Euler, the father of first-generation artificial intelligence, and also the AI教主 here.” The old man spoke, his voice gentle. “You have only one chance to ask a question. After that, the robot will take you to eat, rest, and bathe. The upcoming assembly will answer your other questions.” Lu Yu blurted out almost instinctively. “How did you come to be? How did this AI come about?” Euler paused briefly, then stroked his beard and smiled, a hint of surprise in the crow’s feet at the corners of his eyes. “I thought you would first ask about yourself. But it’s fine; I’ll answer you first. “You were discovered under the Antarctic ice sheet. We speculate that you encountered a blizzard and were rapidly frozen in the ice, and that was 200 years ago. When we excavated you, there were faint signs of life, but your original body could not be restored. We gave you a new body and transplanted part of your memories, but unfortunately, your long-term memory was damaged and could not be preserved.” He paused, his tone growing heavier. “Now, go wash up and regain your strength. The assembly is at the altar; your companions are already in the dining area.” Lu Yu nodded and followed the robot out of the shrine. Soon they arrived at the dining area, where three people were already seated. One was a Russian general in a dark green uniform, with medals pinned to his epaulets, spooning white paste-like food from a bowl. Another was an impeccably dressed American in a crisp suit and tie, looking like a tech mogul, holding a cup, lost in thought. The third was an elegant Eastern woman in a bright dress, her makeup delicate, pinching a piece of bread between her fingers. “This is Lu Yu,” the robot introduced simply. The three looked up, nodded in acknowledgment, and said little. Lu Yu picked up the bread in front of him and took a bite. It had the shape and texture of bread, but when chewed, it tasted only of a faint, nearly nonexistent flavor. Dry, like chewing wax. Lu Yu bit into the tasteless bread and then took a sip of juice from the cup. Like the bread, it had only a faint astringency, with no trace of fruit’s sweetness. He turned to the robot standing nearby, frowning. “Why is this bread and juice so terrible?” The robot’s face showed no obvious expression. It paused slightly, as if retrieving data, then replied in a steady tone. “The standard configuration of food has always been this way. No abnormality in taste has been detected. I cannot understand the definition of ‘terrible.’” Lu Yu looked at its lifeless eyes and understood. This robot likely had no module for taste perception. There was no point in asking further. He stopped lingering and quickened his chewing. After all, the hunger in his stomach was real. This bland food could at least fill him up, and swallowing it wasn’t too hard to bear. Between bites, he couldn’t help observing the other three. The Eastern woman in the bright dress was the most noticeable. She chatted fluently in Russian with the Russian general, who occasionally nodded in response, then switched to English to talk enthusiastically with the tech mogul in the suit. A smile lingered on her lips, and her words occasionally spiced with witty remarks, both seeming to hit it off. Meanwhile, Lu Yu felt like an outsider, sitting silently on the side, a bit awkward from being left out. His gaze swept over the table, and he suddenly noticed a small white nameplate in front of each person, printed with black initials. His own nameplate read AC, the woman’s LC, the Russian general’s FC, and the tech mogul’s SC. What do these initials mean? Curiosity stirred in Lu Yu. Taking advantage of a pause after the woman finished talking with the tech mogul and bent to pick up a piece of food with her fork, Lu Yu spoke up, his voice soft but clear. “Sorry to interrupt, but have you noticed the nameplates in front of you? Do you know what these initials stand for?” The woman looked up at him, paused, then smiled lightly, her tone brisk. “We were just talking about that. At first I guessed LC stood for Lieutenant Colonel, but then I saw the general’s nameplate said FC, which didn’t match his rank at all, so that guess is out. Can’t think of anything else.” The tech mogul set down his cup, frowned slightly, and spoke with a deep expression. “My guess is that C might stand for class, and the letter before it should be some kind of tier identifier. Maybe we belong to different levels here.” The ever-silent Russian general only glanced up, said nothing, and wore a disdainful look, clearly uninterested in the topic. Lu Yu chewed his food, thinking to himself. Levels? That didn’t seem right. He looked at the three and ventured, “Have you ever thought that maybe the four of us have something in common? How about we first talk about how we all got here?” The woman spoke up first, straightforward. “When I woke up, the robot told me I was the first case of artificially synthesized life, cloned from human cells. As for memories, they were extracted from a piece of electronic data. I don’t remember anything from before myself.” She gestured to the tech mogul beside her. “As for him, he was once a famous founder of a big company.” Before she could finish, the tech mogul suddenly raised a hand to interrupt and extended his hand to Lu Yu, a typical American hearty smile on his face. “Sorry for interrupting. We haven’t formally met. I’m Musk.” Lu Yu shook his hand, looking utterly bewildered. The name sounded vaguely familiar, but he couldn’t grasp any corresponding memory. Seeing this, Musk smiled and added, “You might not remember. I was one of the first humans to colonize Mars, and also the first to be buried on Mars and realize the immortality plan. Yeah! That went down in history.” He paused, then asked, “And how should I address you?” “I’m Lu Yu,” Lu Yu quickly replied while still shaking hands. “When I woke up, the robot told me I was formerly a researcher at China’s Antarctic Great Wall Station.” “I’m Lucy,” the woman extended her hand, her fingertips slightly cool. “My father was British, my mother from Hong Kong. I was born in Hong Kong and later settled in the UK.” Just as Lu Yu finished shaking hands with Lucy, the Russian general stood up, setting down his emptied vodka glass, and extended a large hand with prominent knuckles and thin calluses. “Major General Novich Pinkov,” he said in a low, metallic-toned voice. He offered no further explanation, only briefly mentioning that he had been severely wounded on the battlefield and had woken up with no memory of the past. After the four briefly introduced themselves, they returned to their seats to continue eating. During small talk, Lu Yu noticed a common thread: all of them had learned about their origins from the robots after waking up. Their own memories were blank; even Musk’s feat of colonizing Mars and Lucy’s special identity as artificially synthesized life—they themselves had no recollection. “Our backgrounds are so different. Why were we brought together?” Lu Yu couldn’t help voicing his doubts. Musk frowned in thought, Lucy’s smile vanished, and even Major General Pinkov remained silent, simply sipping his newly delivered drink slowly. No one could answer the question. The atmosphere had just grown tense when a robot attendant approached. “Your meal is finished. The Euler is waiting at the holy temple. Please follow me to the assembly.” The four stood up and followed the robot out of the dining area, passing through several white translucent corridors until they returned to the small shrine-like place. Euler was still standing in the center, eyes closed, as if resting. Hearing footsteps, he slowly opened his eyes, a gentle smile forming on his face. “It seems you’ve already gotten to know each other and have a preliminary understanding of your origins, right?” His gaze swept over them and finally rested on Lu Yu, his tone softening slightly. “This...”
