Never let the second kaolin become a cautionary tale: The lifeline of technology and industrial security, seen through the rise and fall of ceramics. When we hold the ceramic bowls and plates used in daily life, few realize that this kaolin—a substance so commonplace to the Chinese—once carried the unique technological code that made ancient China unrivaled globally, and bore witness to a historical regret of lost technology and collapsed monopoly. From the shimmering splendor of Tang dynasty sancai to the deep, rich hues of Yuan dynasty blue-and-white porcelain, Chinese ceramics achieved an absolute industrial monopoly in the ancient world, thanks to unique resource endowments and millennia of technological accumulation. Just like China’s rare earth industry today, which not only boasts the world’s most abundant rare earth reserves but also holds irreplaceable core technologies in refining and purification. However, the tragedy of ceramic technology being stolen and eventually surpassed by the West serves as a mirror, warning us that the rare earth industry must not repeat the same mistakes. Guarding technological barriers and industrial security is the key to inheriting the craftsmanship spirit of a great nation and consolidating the foundation of industry. China’s ceramic monopoly stemmed from a dual endowment of resources and technology. The widespread distribution of kaolin in China turned this miraculous clay into an ordinary raw material. From the low-temperature lead glazes of the Han dynasty to the two-stage firing method of the Tang dynasty, from the precise temperature control of Song dynasty official kilns to the underglaze color techniques of Ming dynasty blue-and-white porcelain, countless artisans polished technical details over millennia, forming an insurmountable barrier for outsiders. In ancient China, ceramics were part of daily life—a necessity for food and drink, and a ritual for ceremonies and feasts. Yet they were never regarded as a strategic asset. This casual neglect planted the seeds for technology leakage. In the late 17th century, French missionary François Xavier d'Entrecolles infiltrated Jingdezhen under the guise of preaching, meticulously documenting the dual formula of porcelain stone and kaolin, the core parameters of high-temperature firing in dragon kilns, and even secretly shipping kaolin samples back to Europe, making public the technological secrets that embodied millennia of wisdom. From then on, Europe broke China’s ceramic monopoly. Britain’s Wedgwood used mechanized production from the Industrial Revolution to improve the craft. France and Italy integrated Western aesthetics to innovate styles. The once-priceless Chinese porcelain was eventually outdone by its students on the international market. This history bears a striking resemblance to today’s rare earth industry in China. Rare earths, known as “industrial vitamins,” are strategic resources abundant in China and widely used—from mobile phone chips and new energy vehicles to aerospace and national defense equipment—all relying on the precise empowerment of rare earths. China is not only the world’s largest rare earth producer but has also accumulated decades of technological expertise in rare earth separation, purification, and high-end applications, forming a complete industrial chain from mining to processing. Like ceramics in the past, the everyday nature of rare earths in the domestic market leads us to overlook their strategic value. In the international market, the scarcity and irreplaceability of rare earths make them a highly sought-after commodity. Historical lessons have proven that resource endowments without technological protection are merely ripe fruit waiting to be picked; core technologies without industrial barriers will eventually become a dowry for others. The loss of ceramic technology not only cost China a hundred-billion-yuan industrial advantage but also surrendered the technological voice accumulated through millennia of craftsmanship. If the rare earth industry repeats this mistake today, the loss will not just be economic benefits, but the nation’s strategic initiative in high-end manufacturing and national defense security. To protect the rare earth industry and prevent the tragedy of ceramics from recurring, we must break free from the mindset of relying on resource advantages and build a triple protection network of technology, institutions, and industry. First, we must treat core technologies as the lifeline of the industry. Protect key technologies such as rare earth refining and high-end applications as if safeguarding state secrets, establish strict technology confidentiality systems, increase R&D investment, drive technological iteration, cultivate an independent intellectual property system, and make Chinese technology an unreproducible barrier for outsiders. Second, we must break the path dependency on resource extraction, shift from raw material export to high-end manufacturing, extend the rare earth industrial chain, and develop high-value-added products such as rare earth permanent magnet materials and rare earth catalysts. Let Chinese rare earths be not just a supplier of raw materials but a technology leader. Finally, at the national level, strategic control must be strengthened, a long-term regulatory mechanism for the rare earth industry established, resource extraction and ecological protection coordinated, and disorderly competition leading to technology leakage and industrial infighting avoided. From kaolin to rare earths, from ceramics to high-end manufacturing, China has never lacked resource endowments or technological wisdom; what is lacking is reverence and protective power for strategic industries. The loss of ceramic technology once made us miss the opportunity of the early modern industrial era. Today, the security of the rare earth industry concerns the future of China’s manufacturing. Let us learn from history. Turn the regret of ceramics’ rise and fall into the determination to protect the rare earth industry.
