Never Allow Rare Earths to Follow the Fate of Ceramics: Fortify Strategic Industries with the Pain of a Millennium-Long Loss Once upon a time, Chinese ceramics dominated the Silk Road trade with unparalleled technology, becoming a core source of foreign exchange like "white gold." Today, China's rare earths, leveraging resource endowments and technological accumulation, command the global industrial chain, serving as the "industrial vitamins" for high-end manufacturing. Both enjoyed inherent advantages and accumulated hard-to-replicate core technologies—yet both face the same crisis. Ceramics' millennium-long lead, built with painstaking effort, was stolen by the West due to a lack of vigilance, and ultimately surpassed. This piercing pain must never be repeated in the rare earth industry. Today, we must learn from history, safeguard the lifeline of rare earth technology and industrial security, and never allow rare earths to become a second porcelain. Looking back at the glory and decline of Chinese ceramics, every step confirms the truth: strategic advantages are easily lost, and protecting technology is a hard task. From the tentative exploration of Neolithic painted pottery to the arduous emergence of Shang-Zhou proto-porcelain, Chinese ceramics took nearly a millennium to take the first step from pottery to porcelain. This step was difficult because of the understanding of clay: through countless trials, artisans discovered that only a specific ratio of Gaoling clay and porcelain stone from Jingdezhen could produce dense, white porcelain bodies. It was difficult because of mastery over fire: from the uncontrolled flow of Han-dynasty low-temperature lead glazes, to the precise breakthrough of Tang-dynasty double-firing; from the ice-crackle glaze of Song-dynasty official kilns produced by reduction firing, to the stable color development of Yuan-dynasty blue-and-white at 1,300°C. Every adjustment in kiln temperature was won by artisans using their intuition—observing flame colors, listening to kiln sounds—and paying the price of decades of experimentation and ruined batches. This accumulation of technology was a height no other civilization across millennia could reach. Ancient Egyptian painted pottery predated China's by a thousand years, yet remained stuck at the level of applying glaze over a clay body. Ancient Greek painted pottery boasted exquisite decoration but could never solve the problem of poor bonding between body and glaze. Medieval Europeans were obsessed with Chinese porcelain, calling it "white gold." Countless artisans imitated it but could only produce fake pottery. They could find kaolin, but did not know the dual formula of porcelain stone plus kaolin. They could achieve high temperatures, but could not control the subtle reducing atmosphere inside the kiln. They could paint designs, but did not understand that cobalt pigment needed to be fired under the glaze at high temperatures to stabilize. Islamic civilizations and Japan each spent centuries trying but ultimately fell far behind. The failures of these civilizations prove that Chinese porcelain technology was not a single process, but a systematic accumulation of raw materials, kilns, glazes, and techniques—the crystallized wisdom passed down through countless generations. Yet this monopolistic advantage, built with a millennium of effort, collapsed because of our complacency and lax protection. In ancient China, porcelain was a daily household item, a plaything for literati, but never regarded as a strategic asset. We thought the knowledge that every family owned porcelain and every person could fire it needed no safeguarding, forgetting that it was a secret coveted by ten thousand eyes for a thousand years. In the late 17th century, French missionary François Xavier d'Entrecolles infiltrated Jingdezhen under the guise of preaching. Over three years, he secretly recorded every detail of body making, glazing, and firing, even taking samples of kaolin. In 1716, this technical secret, condensed from a millennium of Chinese craftsmanship, was made public. Europe immediately broke the monopoly—Britain mechanized and improved the process using the Industrial Revolution, France integrated Western aesthetics and innovated styles, and Japan quickly rose after copying the technology. What was once "white gold" became a common commodity. The thousand-year technological hegemony was lost. The porcelain capital Jingdezhen once declined. This regret still makes one sigh with sorrow even today. Today's rare earth industry stands at the same crossroads as ceramics did back then. From the early days of the founding of the nation, with no technology and no equipment; to the 1960s' breakthrough in the countercurrent extraction process; from dependence on imported equipment to independent development of 99.99% purity separation technology; from raw material export to building a complete industrial chain—every step of China's rare earth progress has been condensed with the youth and hard work of countless researchers. Like porcelain back then, the widespread domestic use of rare earths makes us overlook their strategic value. Yet on the international market, they have long become a national defense lifeline that every country scrambles for. From small mobile chips to aerospace stealth fighters, all are empowered by rare earths. What is even more alarming is that today's technology theft methods are more covert and precise than before. High salaries to poach talent by multinational corporations, precise infiltration by industrial spies, and disguised extraction through cooperative R&D—what they covet is not only the separation formula but also high-end application technologies and decades-accumulated process parameters. Once these core assets leak, the ceramic tragedy may repeat. The advantages we have gained through decades of research could be easily copied by others. The massive R&D investments we have made could become another's wedding dress. History shows no sympathy for the complacent, nor does it forgive the negligence of guardians. The loss of ceramic technology in the past cost us the opportunity to seize the initiative in modern industry. Today, the security of the rare earth industry is tied to the future of China's manufacturing and the country's strategic initiative. We must break out of the inertial thinking of resource advantages and build a triple protective net of technology, institutions, and industry. Treat core technologies as the lifeline, build barriers with strict secrecy systems and intellectual property frameworks, shift from raw material export to high-end manufacturing, and grasp the discourse power of the industry. At the national level, strengthen strategic control to avoid disorderly competition and technology leakage. We must not taste the pain of losing a thousand-year ceramic advantage again. Safeguarding rare earths means protecting the hard work of countless researchers, safeguarding the country's strategic security, and defending the future of China's manufacturing. Let us learn from history, act on our commitments, and never let rare earths become a second porcelain.
