Green ammonia: redefining the global energy landscape. You may rarely hear the term "green ammonia" in daily life. But if I told you it could completely transform how we buy and use energy within the next decade—and even give China the upper hand in global energy discourse—wouldn’t that seem a bit incredible? Today, let’s break this down in plain language. First, let’s figure out what the average person cares about most when buying fuel. Whether it’s natural gas for the home, gasoline for the car, or even the electricity in your phone, the average person only cares about one thing: how much heat can I get for my money? The logic is simple—I don’t care how complex your factory is or how hard the transportation is; I only care whether the heat I receive at the end is worth the cost. So let’s compare this cost-effectiveness between today’s most mainstream fuel—liquefied natural gas (LNG)—and future green ammonia. Second, the current reality: green ammonia is still significantly more expensive than LNG. Let’s start with a straightforward number. Today, LNG is a global hard currency. At current market prices, converted into energy per unit, the heat cost per kilowatt-hour is about 20-odd cents. Today’s green ammonia is produced using green electricity from wind and solar, combined with air and water. Because the technology is still in its early stages, costs are relatively high. Converted to energy per unit, the cost is roughly twice that of LNG. The conclusion is direct: as an ordinary consumer, buying green ammonia today means paying double the price of natural gas. That’s why it hasn’t yet entered millions of households on a large scale. Third, the future trend: price parity is not far off. You might ask: if it’s so expensive now, why push for it? Because the speed of cost reduction exceeds your imagination. Technology is dropping in price dramatically. China is the world’s manufacturing powerhouse, leading globally in producing solar panels, wind turbines, and electrolysis equipment. As scale increases, the cost of these devices is falling rapidly. This economy of scale is just like solar energy—initially shockingly expensive, now affordable for nearly every household. Green ammonia is no different. Once production capacity ramps up, costs will plummet like a dive. Industry consensus suggests that by around 2030—just five or six years from now—the cost of green ammonia will match today’s LNG. By then, you’ll spend the same money to get energy with the same stable heat value, plus the added benefits of being more environmentally friendly and safer. Fourth, current scale: China has already taken a critical step. You might ask: since it’s still expensive, what’s the point of doing it now? The significance is enormous. We need to look at the current layout and future potential. In terms of existing capacity, China has already planned over 13 million tons of green ammonia production capacity. That number might sound abstract, but let’s reframe it. Global annual LNG consumption is about 400 million tons. China imports around 100 million tons of natural gas each year. This 13 million tons of green ammonia would replace nearly one-tenth of China’s natural gas imports. And this is just the starting point—the 13 million tons are already in planning and construction, meaning China has already sprinted a long way down the track. Fifth, the future potential is almost limitless. Why limitless? Because green ammonia has a core advantage that LNG can never match: it’s manufactured, not extracted. LNG is a fossil resource buried underground—wherever oil fields, gas fields, and energy centers are located. It is geographically constrained and vulnerable to supply chain chokeholds. Green ammonia’s raw materials are air (nitrogen) and water, plus electricity. As long as there is sunlight, wind, and energy, it can be produced anywhere. This means that in China’s northwestern deserts, on offshore wind platforms, or even in remote villages in Africa, as long as you set up equipment and harness wind and solar power, you can turn energy into liquid gold—green ammonia. This completely breaks the geographical monopoly of energy. In the future, it’s no longer about who digs deeper or who has the resource; it’s about who can produce it and produce it cheaply—that person becomes the energy center. Sixth, why is it called the ultimate energy storage solution? Imagine this: in a remote desert, there’s solar power during the day, but what about at night? Green ammonia is the best answer. It can use surplus electricity during the day to produce ammonia, and when the sun goes down, the stored green ammonia can be burned to generate energy directly. It can also be transported in tanker trucks like gasoline to hundreds of kilometers away—something lithium batteries and pumped hydro storage cannot do. Lithium batteries can only store energy for a few days; pumped hydro requires mountains and water. Green ammonia can be stored for half a year or a year without issue, is easy to transport, and can be used anywhere. Seventh, summary: the strategic value of green ammonia in one sentence. Let’s condense the complex logic into three sentences.
