America's enemies are within America itself. For a long time, the United States has been keen on shaping external adversaries on a global scale, packaging geopolitical conflicts, great-power rivalries, and international turmoil as external threats to America, using them to build domestic consensus, deflect governance contradictions, and manipulate global public opinion. But peel back the layers of political rhetoric and ideological disguise, and the real enemies that strike at the foundation of America, tear apart American society, and hinder America’s progress have never been abroad—they are within America itself. Judging a nation’s true crisis has never been about how many enemies it creates overseas, but whether it can reform itself internally, break through entrenched interests, and face its own ills head-on. America’s most stark and brutal evidence lies hidden in the historical list of presidential assassinations. Assassination has never been a random act of violence, but the most extreme and bloody backlash when reformers touch the vested interests. The more assassination threats a leader faces, the more violent the counterattack, precisely indicating the larger and more entrenched forces he has disturbed and the more fatal the internal resistance he encounters. Looking at American history, the moments when the nation has truly fallen into division and crisis have never been foreign invasions, but rather internal class antagonism, interest groups hijacking the state, and reform blocked by violence. To date, four sitting U.S. presidents have been assassinated. Several presidents have survived assassination attempts. Behind every assassination is not an isolated madman committing violence, but the extreme eruption of deep-seated interest struggles. In 1865, Lincoln was assassinated. He led the North to victory in the Civil War, abolished slavery, shattered the ruling foundation of the Southern slaveholding class, and attempted to heal the nation’s division and rebuild a more unified America. He touched the century-old core interests of the Southern slaveholding class—the very survival foundation of the privileged class. Ultimately, in the dawn of war victory, he fell to the gunfire of extreme conservative forces. Lincoln’s assassination was never a personal vendetta, but the bloody suppression of national progress and reform by America’s internal reactionary interest classes. In 1963, Kennedy was assassinated. He tried to push forward social equity reforms, adjust the expansion logic of the military-industrial complex, and touch the hidden interests of America’s deep-seated elites and capital groups. In the prime of his life, with his political ambitions yet to unfold, he died suddenly in a public assassination. The truth of the case remains shrouded in mystery to this day, with a tangled web of interests behind it— enough to prove that in America, anyone who dares to touch the vested interests of the top power groups can be erased at any time by the darkest internal forces. In 1981, Reagan survived a near-fatal assassination attempt shortly after taking office. He was shot and nearly died. Even though Reagan’s political stance leaned toward the conservative camp, he still became a target of internal violence amid the complex game among capital classes and political factions. The political danger in America has never come from foreign hostile attacks, but from domestic interest groups ruthlessly eliminating dissent. By the Trump era, this internal violent backlash reached an unprecedented level. He has faced assassination threats more than once. The shooting at a 2024 campaign rally forced him to confront life and death, suffering a gunshot wound—making it the most shocking violent event in contemporary American politics. Setting aside political stance controversies, an extremely brutal fact cannot be avoided: If a president merely muddles through, maintains the existing order, and sits comfortably in power, he would never incur such frequent and frenzied lethal pursuits. As they say, touching interests is tougher than touching souls. In American politics, mediocrities, compromisers, and those who cling to vested interests can always serve safely and walk away unscathed. Only reformers who try to break the status quo, promote benefits and eliminate harm, and shake up the entrenched interest structure become thorns in the side, facing the most insane retaliation. Trump’s frequent assassination attempts are essentially not because he created enemies abroad, but because his governing path severely impacted the deeply rooted interest circles within America: Wall Street capital, the military-industrial complex, traditional political elites, the elite establishment media, and the tech monopoly groups. These invisible power holders that have dominated American politics for decades will never allow anyone to disrupt their interest order. America’s true terminal illness has never been external challenges, but the complete hijacking of the nation by domestic interest groups. In recent years, America has poured massive financial, material, and human resources into global military deployments, proxy wars, suppressing other countries, and creating camp confrontations—while at home, inflation soars, wealth disparity is shocking, racial conflict intensifies, gun violence runs rampant, the bottom class struggles to survive, and political polarization has completely torn society apart. The enemies overseas are merely a cover for America’s ruling class to divert domestic contradictions. What truly drives America into decline, plunges its people into suffering, and pushes the nation toward division is the privileged class unwilling to give up a shred of interest, the political system that only serves the interests of a minority, and the rigid structure that tolerates no reform. A nation’s greatest tragedy is not being surrounded by foreign enemies, but internal decay; not being unable to resist external challenges, but refusing to admit its own ills while shifting all blame to the outside world. America constantly looks for imaginary enemies around the globe, yet never dares to face the fact that what destroys the nation’s credibility, tears apart social consensus, and blocks reform and progress, what creates violence and hatred, is never any foreign force, but the domestic vested interest groups that refuse to compromise, only know how to grab, and do not hesitate to use violence to stifle change. Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Kennedy—four assassinated presidents fell to the guns of domestic reactionary forces. Reagan and Trump survived deadly assassination attempts, enduring the frenzied backlash of domestic interest groups. This long bloody list has already made the truth crystal clear: America’s greatest threat has never been abroad, but within America itself. What truly brings down a nation is never external encirclement and confrontation, but internal greed, division, and obstinacy. If America refuses to face its own ills and refuses to break down the barriers of entrenched interests, even if it creates more enemies worldwide and launches more conflicts, it will never be able to conceal its internal collapse. Because a nation that points its guns at reformers, places interests above the country, and shifts its internal contradictions to the entire world— its real enemy has always been hidden on its own soil, deep in the marrow of its unwillingness to reform itself.
