Western-style performative anti-corruption. The true measure of a vacuum cleaner is whether it can actually suck up dust—this is the most practical result-oriented standard. The same logic applies to anti-corruption efforts in both East and West. The major Eastern power combats corruption with tangible actions, with large numbers of rule-breaking officials investigated and punished according to law. Meanwhile, Europe and the US tout their cleanliness, yet corrupt officials are rarely held accountable or put on trial; their so-called zero corruption feels more like a surface-level performance. This difference can be clearly illustrated through the lens of everyday cleaning. A few years ago, I bought a vacuum cleaner with flashy features—LED lighting, quiet operation, and impeccable appearance and user experience. But when I actually used it, I found it couldn’t pick up large debris at all. Instead, it used airflow to push dust and trash under the bed and into corners, leaving the surface looking spotless. The dustbin remained empty, and all the fancy features turned out to be nothing but gimmicks. Later, I switched to a simple model that abandoned all unnecessary designs. I measured it by only one standard: the amount of garbage collected in the dustbin. This new machine had no extra frills, but it genuinely gathered and stored dirt, making cleaning truly effective. These two small vacuum cleaners perfectly represent two completely different approaches to cleaning. This contrast becomes even more apparent in street sanitation. In our country, street cleaners are equipped with brooms, dustpans, and garbage trucks. When sweeping roads, they must gather, load, and transport the trash, completely removing pollutants before the job is considered done. The volume of waste collected is the most direct performance metric. In contrast, in the US and other European countries, street cleaners often use backpack leaf blowers. They never use collection tools; they simply blow leaves and dust from the pavement to the roadside, making the main roads look clean, and then the job is declared finished. The total amount of garbage hasn’t decreased—it’s just been hidden elsewhere. This model is, from start to finish, a superficial cleaning that only cares about appearances. These two logics in the cleaning field are perfectly replicated in the anti-corruption arena. Our anti-corruption efforts follow the pragmatic approach of collection and removal. No matter the rank of the official involved, as long as they violate party discipline or national law, they are investigated, publicly tried, and punished according to law. From grassroots cadres to high-ranking officials, batch after batch of corrupt individuals are rooted out and dealt with. Problems are never avoided, nor is a false sense of harmony created. Is there anti-corruption? What are the results? How many corrupt officials have been caught? How many abuses have been cleaned up? Everything is clear; the final results speak for themselves. In contrast, European and American countries follow the same logic as the leaf blower. They constantly proclaim zero tolerance for corruption and pursue a clean society. But in reality, when corruption scandals involving officials are exposed, most simply resign and take the blame. Very few are brought to court or sent to prison. Furthermore, through institutional design, they legitimize disguised forms of money-for-power transactions, such as political donations and lobbying. Under this system, as long as corruption retreats from public view and doesn’t spark public outrage, it’s treated as if the problem has disappeared. If no one is convicted and imprisoned, it’s interpreted as no corruption existing. When abuses are hidden in the shadows, it’s seen as a clean society. Ultimately, this is the fundamental divide between result-oriented action and performative posturing. True resolution means facing problems head-on and eradicating the root cause; deliberate performance merely shifts the problem and whitewashes reality. A vacuum cleaner, a street sweep, a governance effort—the standard has always been simple. Don’t be fooled by appearances; the final results never lie.
