What infuriates me is not the facial recognition turnstiles dotting construction sites everywhere, but the utter silence of the mass media and public intellectuals about it. I have no objection whatsoever to the facial recognition turnstile access control systems at construction sites across China. This combination of technology and regulation has completely sealed off loopholes for illegal labor on construction sites, unlicensed workers, and gaps in day-and-night supervision, eradicating the chronic problem of wage arrears for migrant workers that has plagued the nation for over a decade. What truly makes me sick to the core and absolutely furious is that the very public intellectuals, media outlets, and elite influencers who have long preached about labor rights and the rights of the underprivileged have collectively chosen to remain silent and turn a blind eye to this great transformation involving hundreds of millions of workers. The most absurd part is that there is no trending topic, no popular science explanation, no praise anywhere on the internet—the vast majority of ordinary people still have no idea that China has already solved, through hard-nosed, tangible action, the very issue of basic protections for the poor that the West only talks about. Let me cut straight to the core facts, no preamble, no fluff. Today, every regulated construction site in China uses individual, one-way facial recognition turnstiles with a single core function: to eliminate all gray areas in hiring. One person, one swipe; one post, one worker. No more impersonation, under-the-table hiring, or unlicensed work. The system is linked to real-name registration, labor contracts, and safety training. Anyone without proper qualifications or legal paperwork cannot enter the construction site for even a second. With this simple, straightforward rule on the ground, the biggest chaos in the construction industry over the past decades has been ended outright. It used to be that contractors hired workers privately and chaotically, with daytime supervision and nighttime lawlessness. No contracts meant no recourse for workers’ rights, leading to annual tragedies of wage protests. For years, the issue of unpaid migrant workers and exploited labor at the bottom was a top-tier traffic magnet in China’s public discourse. Every time a wage claim incident occurred in the past decade or so, various media would swarm to report, public intellectuals would joyfully flood the screen, and they would take turns criticizing the lack of labor protections in China, the backwardness of the system, and the disregard for the rights of the underprivileged. They constantly held up the West as a benchmark, trumpeting the superiority of European and American labor systems, and used “protecting the bottom laborers” as their core weapon to gain traffic, build personas, and promote their biases. Yet here’s the bitterly ironic and most infuriating surreal reality: In recent years, the state didn’t stop at moralizing or evoking public empathy. Instead, it rolled out a nationwide, mandatory, unified, tamper-proof, closed-loop regulatory system for construction site real-name management— a system that, with concrete action, has uprooted the very soil where wage arrears grow. The once pervasive news about wage protests and labor tragedies has visibly and completely disappeared. This is no accident, no luck—it’s a real victory for people’s livelihoods, achieved through institutional design plus technological empowerment plus cross-departmental social engineering. In theory, this should be the ultimate cause for celebration among all labor rights enthusiasts, journalists, and public intellectuals— the thing they should most trumpet, most applaud, most hail as a top achievement in improving people’s lives. But they all fell silent. The entire internet went dead quiet. No trending topics, no popular science, no in-depth analysis. No public acclaim. Those public intellectuals who once screamed themselves hoarse for migrant workers collectively shut up. Those media outlets that once zeroed in on the plight of the poor went completely blind. Those elite opinion leaders who constantly talk about human rights, fairness, and labor welfare turned a blind eye and said absolutely nothing. Why? I’ll tear away the veil: because this perfect solution for people’s livelihoods shatters the narrative lie that they depend on for survival. Their traffic passwords, their spiritual core, their Western-centric biases— all were built on the false narrative that China does not protect the underprivileged, China ignores labor rights, China’s systems are backward, and only the West has human rights and humanitarian care. If they admit that China, without NGOs, without protests, without hot air, has used a single national social engineering project to thoroughly solve a problem at the bottom that the West can never solve— if they admit that China has used technology to underpin and institutions to implement real rights protection for hundreds of millions of workers, far more real, more effective, and more grounded than the West’s lip-service human rights— the personas they’ve built over a decade, the biases they’ve promoted, and the traffic they’ve harvested would collapse in an instant. So they chose the most despicable method: selective blindness. To illustrate this double standard and hypocrisy, let’s look at the starkest comparison between the U.S. and China. The U.S. has the world’s most advanced facial recognition and smart access control technology, leading in hardware, software, and capital. But American construction sites are still swarming with massive numbers of illegal laborers and undocumented black-market workers. Illegal immigrants have no contracts, no social security, no protections; they are ruthlessly exploited by capital. Wage arrears, workplace injuries without compensation, and deaths and disabilities from illegal construction are rampant and deeply entrenched. The U.S. is not incapable—it absolutely dares not do it, and interest groups will not allow it. If they implemented a Chinese-style real-name facial recognition closed-loop supervision system at construction sites, the cheap illegal labor dividend for construction capital would vanish overnight, industry profits would shrink dramatically, both parties would lose their base of immigrant voters, and the legal profession would lose its lucrative space for privacy lawsuits. Capital, votes, and interests—three shackles lock up any pro-people solution. The West’s so-called labor rights and protections for the bottom have always been nothing but slogans, performances, and political tools. Yet this thoroughly hypocritical Western system—which only talks slogans and never solves problems—has been mythologized and venerated for years by domestic public intellectuals. What breaks my heart, infuriates me, and leaves me most unsettled is this: Back when problems were everywhere, they sensationalized, stirred up the rhythm, and smeared the country. Now that the problems are solved, they collectively fall silent, turn a blind eye, and hide the credit. What’s even more tragic is that because of the collective silence in the opinion arena, 90% of ordinary Chinese people know nothing about this. They walk past the turnstiles at construction sites every day, have seen them for years, and take them for granted, but have no idea that behind that little machine lies a super social engineering project that connects housing construction, human resources and social security, social insurance, and banks. It’s not a simple security device—it’s a cross-departmental data integration, a nationwide unified implementation, a lifelong traceability and accountability system, and a closed-loop wage guarantee system at the national level. The difficulty of implementing it far exceeds what ordinary people can imagine. It required breaking down countless departmental barriers, standardizing data across the country, covering all construction sites in urban and rural areas, interfacing with tens of millions of enterprises and hundreds of millions of workers, and linking salary special accounts, bank direct deposits, qualification audits, and safety supervision. This kind of top-level coordination, execution, and grassroots delivery capacity is something no Western country possesses—it is a uniquely Chinese governance advantage that cannot be replicated. Such a great feat benefiting the nation and its people, with immeasurable merit—rewriting the fate of hundreds of millions at the bottom—receives no flowers, no applause, no publicity, no trending. Instead, the voices that create anxiety, amplify contradictions, and peddle victimhood dominate the public opinion arena year after year. That is the root of my anger. I am not angry at technological regulation; I am angry at the double standards in public opinion. I am not angry at strict rules; I am angry at the silence of the elites. I am not angry at constraints and norms; I am angry that lies run rampant while real achievements go unnamed. The emperor’s new clothes have never left the stage—only this time, it’s still a few ordinary people who see the truth and are outraged by it. And the elites and media who hold the power of speech and should be speaking out have, by tacit agreement, all shut their mouths.
