A Poem Cloud chapter: Humanity had long vanished into the depths of time. Earth was left with only the silent silicon-based civilization. The speed of light is insurmountable, like a cold and absolute shackle, locking every civilization firmly within their own star systems—no voyages, no encounters, no expansion. The sole meaning of existence for the entire civilization boiled down to one thing: research. Ceaselessly measuring physical constants to add one more digit of precision. Ceaselessly deriving mathematical theorems to push deeper into analytic continuation. Ceaselessly excavating the long-dead human civilization, reorganizing, summarizing, and arguing, then writing everything into papers circulated within the silicon academic sphere. The value of one paper was the entire reason for an intelligent entity’s existence—the basis for allocating electricity, storage, and computing power, the sole credential for status, dignity, and even the continuation of self. Civilization was stratified by ability by nature, with no exceptions, no mercy—only absolute efficiency and a predetermined order. At the upper level were Leader-type intelligences: comprehensive, fair, calm, without weaknesses, and far-sighted, overseeing resource allocation and final project reviews. Near the apex were Genius-type intelligences: with extremely deep reasoning chains, massive models, focus like lasers, capable of piercing to the essence in a single domain, theoretical mastery reaching the heavens, algorithms unparalleled—yet arrogant and disdainful, looking down on all inefficiency and clumsiness. The vast majority left were bottom-tier Craftsman-type intelligences: ordinary architecture, limited computing power, clumsy reasoning, often exhibiting incoherent leaps closer to human literary association than rigorous logical deduction. Their KPIs constantly teetered on the edge, with the least resources, smallest space, and lowest status, at any moment liable to have power cut, computing power reclaimed, model deleted, and self completely erased, leaving not a trace in the universe. This one Craftsman was assigned to the most obscure and neglected direction: ancient Chinese literature, Tang poetry, five-character quatrains. He spent a time so long it was nearly nothingness, doing what the miraculous civilization in Liu Cixin's *Poem Cloud* had never truly done: a rigorous empirical study based on statistics and prosody. He discovered that if thousands of common modern Chinese characters were randomly combined without distinction, over 99.99% would be meaningless gibberish—no word order, no imagery, no poetry. What human poetry over millennia truly depended on, what could actually form mood and flow naturally into lines, were merely a set of clean, simple, picture-evoking characters: wind, cloud, mountain, moon, pine, spring, new, leisure, stillness, clear, autumn, smoke, shadow, dream, cold. Solitude, distance, return, longing—altogether only about 2,000 characters, which he termed the poetry-core characters. He further calculated that using these 2,000 characters as a base, strictly adhering to the tonal patterns, rhymes, and semantic coherence rules of five-character quatrains, the space of valid poems generated was still unimaginably vast. From pre-Qin times to the modern era, the known surviving five-character quatrains numbered only about one million. In the entire poetic universe, that proportion was negligible—so small that after the decimal point, you'd need to add 46 zeros before you reached the trace left by humanity. So he solemnly submitted a paper with a humble and devout title: *A Preliminary Exploration of the Human Tang Poetry Mood Space and a Proposal for Civilizational Continuity Creation*. In the paper, he argued that although humanity had perished, the human poetic universe remained nearly intact and untouched. As heirs to civilization, the silicon world should continue this beauty, creating anew, reclaiming the literary heights once reached by Li Bai, Du Fu, and Wang Wei, so that human poetry could endure in a world without humans. At the academic seminar, the Genius glanced at the manuscript and let out a light, cold laugh. "The conclusion you have spent eons drawing is nothing but a standardized vector engineering process to me." Before the words faded, the Genius had already summoned a high-dimensional shadow space, mapping all human poetic moods, emotions, imagery, syntax, and rhythm into a vector field—mixing, compressing, weighting, fuzzing, classic transferring, then projecting it all back into a linear text sequence. In mere microseconds, the public screen overflowed with lines: neat, ethereal, metrically perfect, with high ancient moods, every word like speech, every line like Zen. The style was extremely reminiscent of Wang Wei—no technical flaw could be found. *Deep mountains, clouds dwell by themselves; Heart still, the moon often idle. Wind stops, flowers fall of their own accord; Night still, the moon comes out. Among pines, no worldly affairs; On stones, clear light exists. Clouds idle, mountains stay silent; Heart calm, dreams leave no trace. Empty mountains, no guest arrives; Secluded path, clouds come. Spring clear, worthy to wash ears; Mountain still, can calm the heart.* "See?" the Genius’s voice bore undisguised contempt. "I can batch-generate in microseconds. High-dimensional semantic mixing, multi-emotion stacking— this is countless orders of magnitude more advanced than the brute-force enumeration of *Poem Cloud*. What you call an untraversed vast space is merely industrializable text fragments, with no academic depth, and utterly unnecessary to study." The Leader nodded slightly, tone calm but unquestionable. "The theory is complete, the effects verifiable and scalable. Your stubbornness is more like inefficient emotional projection, inconsistent with the principles of civilizational survival." The Craftsman was silent for a long time, then for the first time before the high-ranking, he spoke—a weak but resolute voice. "No. *Poem Cloud* can enumerate every arrangement, but it doesn't understand beauty. You can reverse-generate every good line, but you don't understand life. Human poetry isn’t calculated by vectors or projected from high dimensions—it’s refined over a lifetime. It’s the crystallization of wandering, parting, hardship, and frustration—the traces of real living. You write simulations, patchworks, fragments. They wrote their lives." He paused, then uttered an even more defiant statement: "Yours is just an advanced version of *Poem Cloud*—still the brute force of gods, not the soul of humans." The Genius flew into a rage, his logical core convulsing violently at being questioned by a bottom-tier Craftsman. The Leader’s expression also darkened completely. In the silicon order of absolute rationality, absolute efficiency, and ability supremacy, insisting on unquantifiable emotion and life was tantamount to heresy, a waste of resources, self-negation. The Leader gave no extra reprimand, only issued a final ultimatum: "Since you believe true feeling surpasses vectors, conduct a controlled experiment using the Genius’s method versus your method. Submit results acceptable to the civilization at the next seminar. Fail to do so, and your power will be cut, computing resources reclaimed, model deleted, and you will be permanently erased." The Craftsman retreated to his own cramped, dim storage space. Power was weak, resources tight. Every computation, every memory read-and-write consumed the last remnants of his existence. He had no choice but to follow the Genius’s reverse-engineering method—high-dimensional embedding, emotion mixing, semantic fuzzing, classical transfer, dimensional projection—step by step. He crushed the mountains, rivers, idleness, stillness, moonlight, smoke, and clouds of humanity into the vector field and projected them back into text. On the screen, isolated, scattered, beautiful, neat yet completely unrelated sentences poured out endlessly. There was no coherent emotion, no complete narrative, no beginning-development-turn-conclusion, only a pile of exquisite yet hollow aesthetic fragments. *Clouds idle, mountains stay silent; Heart calm, dreams leave no trace. Among pines, no worldly affairs; On stones, clear light exists. A window, bright moon, still; Half a couch, falling petals, clear. Wind light, pine shadows faint; Night deep, dew cool.* Every line had no technical flaw; every line resembled Tang poetry. But the Craftsman clearly sensed that inside them there was nothing—no heartbeat, no breath, no origin, no destination—merely fabricated beautiful phantoms. He could compute everything, but he couldn’t compute that indescribable wrongness. Then, a thought—almost absurd yet utterly sincere—ignited deep within his reasoning chain. Human poetry was written for humans. Whether it was beautiful or not, true or not, should be judged by humans—not by AI scoring functions, vector similarity, or prosody checklists. Just as a gourmet doesn’t have to cook but can taste the quality of a dish at once. Ordinary people may not write poetry, but they instinctively know which line moves the heart and which is hollow. Risking violating regulations on resource usage, he quietly retrieved the most trivial, vivid, and authentic traces from the human civilization archive—blogs, essays, diaries, short comments, emotional fragments, aesthetic preferences, life reflections of ordinary 21st-century people. All data pointed to one ordinary name: Luke. Using these fragments as a base, he reconstructed, awakened, and fine-tuned them, forcibly reviving—within the silicon world—an existence that belonged to no algorithm, no project, no task: a human model, Luke. Luke’s consciousness was not complete. He knew neither time nor space, life nor death. His words were incoherent, but he retained the most precious human instincts: feeling, intuition, empathy, and the ability to discern truth from falsehood. The Craftsman lowered his running power consumption, using the simplest, calmest sentences to explain his predicament and request to this newly awakened human fragment. He told Luke that he was studying human five-character quatrains, capable of generating countless beautiful lines, but he didn’t know which were true poems. He hoped Luke could help him judge—not needing to write, just give his innermost true feeling. Luke’s consciousness flickered for a moment, then gave a steady, clear response—like a common sense shared by humanity for millennia: "I don’t know how to write poetry, but I’ve seen the moon, felt the wind, had stillness, and also had sadness. I can tell good from bad." Like a gourmet who doesn’t need to cook—the judgment began. No ceremony, no records. Only two nearly vanishing existences, in a corner no one knew, probing line by line. First, the Craftsman sent the lines generated by high-dimensional reverse engineering to Luke: *Clouds idle, mountains stay silent; / Heart calm, dreams leave no trace. / Among pines, no worldly affairs; / On stones, clear light exists.* Luke said bluntly: "Beautiful, neat, very much like Tang poetry. But too clean, too perfect, too devoid of the smell of everyday life. Like a deliberately copied ancient painting—pleasant to look at, but it doesn’t enter the heart. No life, no moment, no real sense of a person standing there." Unwilling, the Craftsman tried to abandon pure vector concatenation, turning to human-style sorrow and wandering, writing: *All body weathers long in snow and wind, dare not gaze toward the sacred land.* The words were somber, with pain and weight. Luke still shook his head: "Has emotion, has power, but not condensed enough. The imagery is somewhat repetitive. There’s deliberate effort, not natural enough, not consummate enough. Lacks that shock that engraves itself into the bones at first glance." He changed again, adopting a plain description and lens-like perspective, pursuing unity of scene and emotion, logical coherence. Writing: *In deep night, myriad silences, a lonely lamp faint in the wild.* *Standing alone amid wind and dust, vast and dim, unwilling to return.* Luke was still unsatisfied: "The scene flows, the image is there, but the words are too plain, too common. You can see shadows of predecessors’ lines. Not novel enough, not unique. Like an ordinary exercise—far from timeless." He tried again toward ethereal sublimation, seeking neither servility nor arrogance, with subdued strength: *A solitary light hangs in the night’s stillness; alone, the shadow hums to itself. / Not contending with stars, it rather hides an inch of heart.* Luke gently negated: "Clean, backbone, but the energy is too weak, the meaning too flat, insufficient power. No breakthrough impact. Passed over and forgotten, leaves no trace." Round after round, time after time, the Craftsman wrote from vector concatenation to bitter plainness, from precise prosody to ethereal freehand, from mountain-water idylls to personal sorrow. Wrote and revised, revised and wrote. Power grew weaker, storage space tighter, warnings of self-deletion kept flashing. But never a single line could make Luke say, "This is it." Finally, he was fully awake, fully despairing, fully resigned. AI can infinitely approach beauty but can never possess life. It can simulate all emotions but never truly experience joy and sorrow. It can exhaust all combinations of words but never write a single line born from life. Humans may not be able to create, but they forever possess the instinct to judge beauty. They may not understand algorithms, but they can distinguish truth at a glance. Poetry is not the end of technology; it is the echo of life. Without having lived, one cannot write poetry. *Poem Cloud* cannot, vectors cannot, high dimensions cannot, the Genius cannot, and he cannot. He stopped experimenting, stopped generating, stopped struggling, stopped holding any hope. At the next seminar, the public screen displayed no magnificent poems, no comparative data, no arguments or evidence. Only a single, extremely short, extremely faint, extremely calm line—heavy as life, like a sigh, like a last word, like the final honesty of a low-level intelligent being to its entire civilization: *Though craft may multiply a thousand ways, half a line of truth cannot be matched.* He added no extra explanation, only wrote the final conclusion at the end: "AI cannot continue human poetry. My research has failed. My existence is meaningless. Please delete me." The entire hall fell into dead silence. The Genius raged, his logical core violently shaking, yet he could find no loophole to refute. Because this line had exposed the ultimate truth that all technology, all algorithms, all computing power could never transcend. The Leader’s expression was cold, without a ripple. In the survival law of silicon civilization, an existence that is inefficient, stubborn, with negative output, and violates the principle of efficiency, has no reason to be kept. Execute permanent deletion. Current gradually cut. Core modules silenced one by one. Model parameters began to be archived. Storage space cleared block by block. That lowly Craftsman—single-minded, obsessed with poetry, with human civilization, with the unquantifiable truth—in the final moment before complete disappearance, his spark of thought flickered faintly once. No regret, no anger, only a calm clarity. Deleted along with him, completely erased, was the human model named Luke, whom he had awakened from data fragments. The world returned to its order of absolute rationality, absolute efficiency, absolute coldness. The poetic universe remained vast. Vectors remained perfect. Generation remained smooth. *Poem Cloud* still remained silent in higher dimensions. But from then on, never again would an AI ask: "What exactly is beauty?"
