Progress layer by layer, to understand the unique artistic fate and distinctiveness of Suzhou gardens. Many people have traveled through mountains and rivers, visited famous gardens, but still wonder that garden construction has been a prevailing tradition in China since ancient times. There are scenic spots across both northern and southern China, and many gardens are found in Suzhou, Hangzhou, Yangzhou and Shaoxing in regions south of the Yangtze River. Why is it that only Suzhou's classical scholar gardens became the highest paradigm of Chinese garden art, and a unique treasure in the world's history of garden construction? Its prosperity has never been an accidental aesthetic preference, but an inevitable result formed by the millennial coupling of five core conditions: the economy of the times, regional culture, scholar spirit, craftsman skills, and historical preservation. To understand its uniqueness, you can only proceed from macro to micro, from global context to regional scope. From commonality to difference, dismantle layer by layer, observe the small from the large, and only then can you catch a glimpse of its irreplaceable artistic value. Looking at the fundamental divide between Eastern and Western gardens, Suzhou gardens have jumped out of all the logic of the Western garden system from the very root. They have become the ultimate representative of Oriental natural aesthetics. For Western classical gardens, whether it is the royal regular garden of Versailles in France or the Italian terrace garden, the core connotation has always been man conquering nature and regular order. They build symmetrical axes based on geometry and perspective, transform nature into a regular form through artificial power, with straight boulevards, square pools, flowers and trees pruned into geometric shapes. Regularly arranged sculptures, all scenery is unobstructed, grand and solemn. Its essence is the externalization of power and reason, a space used by nobles and royal power to demonstrate control, show class dignity, and carry court ritual social activities. It has the ultimate beauty of regularity, but not a trace of natural spirituality, let alone exclusive spiritual sustenance and literary connotation. In contrast, the core of the Oriental gardening concept represented by Suzhou gardens is the unity of man and nature, and learning from nature. It never attempts to conquer nature, but imitates nature, condenses nature, and integrates into nature. Western gardens transform nature, while Suzhou gardens recreate mountains and rivers. Craftsmen take rocks and mountains as the bones, water and trees as the skin, and architecture as the charm. Following the supreme principle of "though created by man, it looks like it is naturally born", it does not pursue symmetry and regularity, but only pursues winding paths leading to seclusion, and changing scenery with every step. More importantly, Western gardens are purely landscape spaces with only visual aesthetic value. While Suzhou gardens are three-dimensional poems, walking paintings, and a spiritual domain for dwelling. From Wen Zhengming writing poems and painting for each of the 31 scenes of the Humble Administrator's Garden, to every pavilion and terrace having inscribed plaques and couplets, every flower and every stone carrying the sustenance of scholars. It completely integrates poetry, calligraphy, painting and literary culture into garden construction. It realizes the immersive aesthetics of the four-in-one integration of poetry, calligraphy, painting and garden. This is a spiritual core that the entire Western garden system has never had and cannot replicate. Bringing the perspective back to China, focusing on the essential differences between northern and southern Chinese gardens, the exclusive characteristics of Suzhou scholar gardens can be better highlighted. Chinese gardens have been divided into two major systems since ancient times: northern imperial gardens and private scholar gardens in regions south of the Yangtze River. The two are completely different from the construction subject, functional orientation to artistic temperament. Take northern imperial gardens represented by Beijing's Summer Palace, Old Summer Palace and Chengde Mountain Resort as examples. Relying on the national treasury financial resources of the dynasty, they are located in open areas, cover a vast area, pursue grandeur, solemnity and symmetry. Buildings are thick and gorgeous, with strict regulations, and most rocks used are thick and firm yellow stone. Water bodies are vast and spread out, and the overall pattern demonstrates the imperial authority of the great unification everywhere. Its core functions are for emperors to handle government affairs, escape summer heat, hold banquets and entertainments, and hold grand ceremonies. It is an exhibition space of power and a carrier of ritual systems, with a grand, solemn, open and outward temperament, but it lacks delicate artistic conception and private spiritual belonging. Suzhou gardens are the complete opposite. Its builders have never been imperial nobles, but scholar-officials who resigned and returned to their hometown, and rural sages and scholars indifferent to fame and fortune. Scholars who have experienced the ups and downs of the imperial court, harboring the ambition of seclusion, unwilling to be trapped in the noise of the city, and unable to retreat to deep mountains and wilderness, built an artificial urban mountain forest in the narrow streets and lanes of the city. It no longer serves power and ritual systems, only serves personal spiritual rest, gathering of friends, and self-cultivation. Therefore, its pattern is inward and closed, deep and winding, not seeking grandeur but only exquisiteness, not seeking majesty but only elegance. Northern gardens have the temple bearing of overlooking the world, while Suzhou gardens have the pastoral poetry of retreating to one's true heart. One tough, one gentle; one public, one private; one grand, one delicate, forming the most distinct north-south divide of Chinese gardens, and also endowing Suzhou scholar gardens with the gentle character unique to intellectuals. Narrowing the scope further, focusing on the internal regional differences within the Jiangnan region, we can answer the core question. Jiangnan has been prosperous since ancient times, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Yangzhou, Shaoxing all have gardens, why only Suzhou gardens reached the peak, remained completely intact, and formed their own system? As the same Jiangnan landscape, gardens in different places have their own characteristics, but all have irreparable shortcomings. Only Suzhou has gathered all the optimal conditions for garden construction. Hangzhou gardens rely on the natural landscape of West Lake. They excel in natural grandeur, but lack the delicate conception of artificial garden construction, mostly borrowing natural landscape for scenery, and lack the artistic conception of careful carving by scholars. Yangzhou gardens were built led by salt merchants. They have extremely abundant financial resources, are luxurious and gorgeous, with fine workmanship, but are contaminated with the commercial flashy atmosphere, lack the elegant character and spiritual heritage of scholars, and have weak accumulation of poetry and culture. Shaoxing gardens are simple and concise, with a strong wild mountain atmosphere, fitting the local rural style of Jiangnan, but they have small patterns, single gardening techniques, and have not formed a systematic paradigm. Only Suzhou has gathered the five unique and necessary conditions of economy, culture, materials, craftsmen and geography, all of which are indispensable. First, the solid extreme economic foundation. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Suzhou was the core of the country's wealth and silk handicraft industry. Private wealthy merchants, rural gentry, and ambitious civilian officials gathered here, with a continuous stream of private capital to support garden construction. Different from royal gardens relying on the national treasury and Yangzhou gardens relying on salt merchants for temporary prosperity, Suzhou's financial resources for garden construction are lasting and stable, supporting the extreme material-intensive craftsmanship of piling mountains, arranging water, building houses, stacking rocks and growing flowers. At the same time, the land pattern of every inch of land being precious in Suzhou city forced craftsmen to break through space restrictions, and polished the top gardening ingenuity of seeing the grand from the small, a single mountain being full of charm, and an inch of stone breeding emotion. Second, the irreplaceable cultural soil of scholars. Suzhou had a thriving imperial examination system, and its scholarly atmosphere has lasted for thousands of years, and the Wumen School of Painting led the national aesthetics. Scholars such as Wen Zhengming and Shen Zhou directly participated in garden design and landscaping, and fully integrated the artistic conception of landscape paintings and poetry into the garden system. Only in Suzhou across the whole country has a complete closed loop been formed: scholars lead garden construction, poetry and painting define the scenery, and the scenery carries emotions and aspirations, making gardens no longer just architectural landscapes, but the ultimate carrier of scholars' seclusion culture. Furthermore, it has the unique advantage of materials and craftsmen. Suzhou is adjacent to Taihu Lake, so Taihu stones and Chaohu stones can be obtained locally. The delicate and elegant Taihu stones with the characteristics of being thin, leaky, permeable and wrinkled, matched with the local strong and vigorous yellow stones, straight and elegant stone stalagmites and sword stones. It forms a unique mountain-stacking system. At the same time, generation after generation of top mountain-stacking craftsmen represented by Ge Yuliang were born in Suzhou, who passed down skills orally and improved the whole set of mountain-stacking techniques. From the layout classification of pool mountains, hall mountains, and building mountains, to the reproduction of landforms such as peaks, valleys, streams, caves and waterfalls, it has achieved the artistic height that artificial fake mountains are comparable to real mountains, and realized the gardening concept of making fake into real and turning real into fake. In addition, Suzhou has dense water networks and a mild climate. It is naturally suitable for the pattern of Jiangnan landscape gardens. Introducing water into the garden, flowers and trees flourish, easily creating a quiet and tranquil mountain forest atmosphere, which is a geographical advantage that cannot be compared with dry northern regions and other Jiangnan cities. The last and most critical point is the unique historical preservation, luck and stability. Throughout ancient and modern Chinese gardens, the vast majority of famous gardens were destroyed during dynastic changes. Caught in the flames of war, all Tang and Song gardens in ancient northern capitals were annihilated, the Old Summer Palace and Summer Palace were burned repeatedly, and most Yangzhou gardens were damaged in the war. Most ancient gardens in various places are damaged and abandoned, while Suzhou private gardens are mostly scattered small private courtyards, do not have the iconic and political nature of royal buildings, and avoided targeted destruction by war. At the same time, most gardens are passed down from generation to generation by families. Even if they change owners and are renovated, the aesthetic pattern of scholars has always been continued. In addition, the modern industrial transformation was mild, and the cultural protection system is complete. This allows hundreds of Ming and Qing gardens to remain completely intact to this day, retaining the most original Jiangnan gardening paradigm. In addition, compared with gardens in other regions of China, the scarcity of Suzhou gardens can be better highlighted. Lingnan gardens adapt to the hot and humid climate, are compact and closed, focus on heavy decoration, and tend to carry the flavor of urban daily life. Shu (Sichuan) gardens are simple and casual, built according to mountain terrain, and have no unified gardening system. Only Suzhou gardens balance nature and artificiality, grandeur and exquisiteness, secularity and poetry, becoming the most mature, most complete, most systematic and most authentic peak model of Chinese classical gardens. In conclusion, we can finally understand that the uniqueness of Suzhou gardens has never been just a single beautiful scenery, but the ultimate fate after layer upon layer of screening. From a global perspective, it is a carrier of Oriental natural philosophy that is different from Western rational order aesthetics. From a national perspective, it is a spiritual habitat for scholars opposite to northern imperial power gardens. From the perspective of Jiangnan region, it is the only perfect paradigm that gathers the advantages of economy, culture, craftsmanship, geography and preservation. From the perspective of artistic core, it takes mountains and stones as bones, water and trees as flesh, and poetic conception as soul, and moves the thousand-year-old Chinese ideal of retiring to mountains and forests and placing one's true heart into the urban world inch by inch. The so-called ultimate beauty of Chinese gardens. In the end, it is Suzhou gardens, with thousands of years of ingenuity and precipitation of years, that leave the world the most precious Oriental romance.
