From the first chapter of Wittgenstein's *Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus*, understand the world boundary of large language models, like playing a text adventure game from which you can never escape. Reading the first chapter of Wittgenstein's *Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus* for the first time, it's easy to be confused by the abstract opening sentences. The world is everything that is the case. The world is the totality of facts, not of things. But if you place these philosophical views alongside the early internet text adventure games MUD and today's large language models (LLMs), you suddenly realize that this philosopher's thinking over 80 years ago has already fully revealed the essence of AI's world. Whether it's a MUD game or an LLM, both are essentially bounded simulators built with symbols, and the boundaries of language or symbols are the boundaries of their worlds. First, understand the first chapter of the *Tractatus*: the world is not a heap of things but a string of facts. In the first chapter, Wittgenstein uses seven short sentences to deconstruct his view of the world, with only two core points. One: The world equals the sum of facts, not the sum of things. First, it is not isolated things like tables, chairs, or the sun that make up the world, but facts such as the table being on the floor, the sun shining, and me seeing a treasure chest in a cave that piece together the world. It's like describing a room: you wouldn't just say there is a bed, a lamp, and a book, but rather that the bed is by the window, the lamp is on, and the book is lying on the table. The latter are facts, the basic units of the world. Two: Each fact is independent; changing one does not affect others. For example, the fact that the table is moved to the door does not affect the sun shining. The book lies on the table, unless moving the table knocks the book off. The world is like a string of independent beads, each bead being a fact. The string is the whole, but a change in a single bead does not cause the whole string to fall apart. Second, put the first chapter into the game. MUD's text adventure is Wittgenstein's miniature world experiment. If you have played early DOS system text adventure games, such as classic MUD or *Colossal Cave Adventure*, you will find that the design of such games is practically a real-life replication of the first chapter of the *Tractatus*. The world of MUD is the sum of factual descriptions. When you open MUD, the screen does not just show "cave, treasure chest, monster," but rather a block of text: "You are standing at the entrance to a damp cave, with the sound of dripping water above, a rusty iron chest in front of you, and a low growl coming from the right." This is exactly Wittgenstein's collection of facts: you are at the cave entrance, the chest is iron, there is a sound on the right. Each description is a game fact, making up the game world you can perceive. MUD's interaction is about changing a single fact while leaving others unchanged. When you type "open chest," the game updates the description: "The chest opens, revealing a bronze key. The water dripping sound continues, and the low growl on the right persists." The fact "the chest is open" has changed, but other facts like the dripping water and the growl remain untouched, perfectly fitting the principle that each fact can be the case or not the case while everything else remains the same. For instance, even if you play a 2D or 3D adventure game, the essence is the same. In a 3D game, the 3D model of the treasure chest simply replaces the textual fact "rusty" with an image fact, but the logic that the world is composed of facts remains unchanged. Third, look at large language models (LLMs): their context is just a more advanced MUD text description. Today's LLMs, such as ChatGPT or Ernie Bot, seem complex but actually share the same world logic as MUD games. Their world is also bounded by Wittgenstein's language boundary: an LLM's context equals MUD's current scene description. When you send a message to an LLM, "I am in a cave with an iron chest in front of me. What should I do?" this is equivalent to typing "look around" in MUD. The LLM's context is the game facts it receives. It replies, "You could try opening the chest, or examine it for a keyhole," which is also equivalent to the interaction options MUD provides based on current facts. Even if future technology achieves infinite context, it would just expand a single scene's description into the log of the entire game, like being able to look back at all dialogue records from entering the forest to reaching the cave instead of only seeing the current cave description. But the core is still piecing together the world with language, not stepping outside the framework of linguistic symbols. In an LLM, there is no experience detached from language, just as in MUD, there is no tactile texture. In MUD games, the weight of the chest or the temperature of the cave does not exist unless the programmer writes "the chest feels heavy" or "the cave is chilly." The same applies to LLMs: the coolness of water or the warmth of sunlight is blank to them. It can say "the water feels cool," but that is merely a linguistic concatenation, not a cognition of coolness. Just as the chest in MUD is forever only a text description, the world in an LLM is forever only a collection of linguistic symbols. This is precisely Wittgenstein's AI version of "The limits of my language mean the limits of my world" (5.6). Fourth, the ultimate conclusion: whether MUD, LLM, or multimodal AI, they are all bounded simulators. Some people think future LLMs can break free from language and become AI that truly understands the world. But from Wittgenstein's perspective, this is like believing that giving MUD infinite memory could simulate the real world. It fundamentally misunderstands the simulator's boundary. Even if upgraded to multimodal AI with text, images, and audio, it is just turning text MUD into a 3D game. A 3D game can simulate the visual appearance of a chest and the sound of metal friction, but it cannot simulate the tactile feeling of rust on the chest. A multimodal AI can output an image of sunlight with bird sounds, but it cannot experience the warmth of sunlight on the skin. Their world is always a collection of symbols—language, images, sounds—while the sensory experiences and subjective feelings of the real world are the unspeakable things that symbols can never exhaust. Wittgenstein says that the intelligence of AI is essentially proficiency in playing symbol games. Playing MUD well means being familiar with text interaction rules. Using an LLM smoothly means being familiar with language probability rules. But no matter how skilled a game player is, they cannot jump out of the game world. Just as an LLM can write code and copy but never understands the joy of thinking while coding or the emotional weight behind the copy, because these are things beyond the boundary of language. Reading the first chapter of the *Tractatus* and recalling MUD games, then thinking about AI LLMs, you suddenly realize: Wittgenstein was not talking about abstract philosophy but revealing the essence of building a world with symbols. Whether it is the text games from 80 years ago or today's AI, as long as they rely on language or symbols, they can never escape the boundary. And this boundary is not a flaw; it is a reminder that AI is an efficient symbolic tool, not a replica of the real world. Just as MUD is a fun game but never a real adventure, recognizing this allows us to view the value and limitations of AI more rationally.
