Who is covering up for the lighthouse? A farcical public opinion drama sparked by a folk narrative. When the struggles of America's lower class have long been an everyday sight on the streets, when a $20,000 out-of-pocket bill for kidney stone surgery becomes a visceral pain, when the plot of a 1990s film where homeless people are used as medical experiment fodder becomes reality, the truly absurd is not these obscured truths, but rather the fact that some people insist on branding folk firsthand accounts as official defamation. The willful blindness of mainstream American society toward its own underclass, combined with the sycophantic cover-ups by some overseas Chinese, forms the most glaring backdrop of this public opinion storm. The starting point of all this was simply a medical professional telling the truth. He has seen homeless people huddled outside hospitals in Seattle, seen middle-class families plunged into poverty by a single illness, seen families squeezed dry by pharmaceutical capital down to their last penny. These are not sensational fabrications, but norms deeply rooted in the fabric of American society. Next to the bustling commercial district of Little Tokyo in Los Angeles, there is a sprawling tent city just one street away. On the streets of Newark, near New York, drug dealers and homeless people crowd the municipal avenues, creating a no-go zone that locals dare not enter. Musicals from the last century already sang of the helplessness of tent cities. The 1990s film "Extreme Measures" vividly portrayed the distortion of medical ethics. To develop a treatment for paraplegia, a hospital lures homeless people into its lab, first artificially inducing paralysis and then attempting to cure them, reducing countless lives at the bottom to sacrifices for academic prestige and commercial profit. The most ironic scene in the film is when the protagonist, once a steadfast whistleblower, is paralyzed and falls into moral struggle. This precisely exposes the weakness of human nature. When suffering does not befall oneself, everyone can stand on a moral high ground. But once personal interests are at stake, positions easily waver. And these plots are far from fictional. The firsthand experience of a $70,000 kidney stone surgery, even with insurance coverage, still required a $20,000 out-of-pocket payment. That amount is enough to crush a family with an annual income of only $20,000. In America, the commuting barrier of being unable to go anywhere without a car, the unaffordable housing costs for low-income groups, and the desperate struggles of undocumented immigrants living in the cracks—these have long woven a net that traps the lower class. What is even more telling is that these phenomena have long been an unremarkable daily reality within American society. Mainstream media is busy crafting a myth of freedom and prosperity, while the elite hide behind big suburban houses, isolating themselves from the underclass. Even partisan struggles only use poverty as a tool to attack opponents, with no one truly caring about the lives in those tents. This is a naked manifestation of social Darwinism. In a value system of "every man for himself," the homeless are merely losers in the competition, and their hardships are tacitly accepted as the price of free competition. The true absurdity reached its peak the moment the storyteller was forced to flee. An overseas Chinese journalist stepped forward, labeling this folk narrative as official defamation, erasing the visceral pain of all firsthand witnesses with a few words. He may well know about the tent cities on American streets and may well have heard of the outrageous bills from astronomical medical costs. But he understands even better that only by catering to the gleaming narrative of the lighthouse country can he stand firm within the discourse system of mainstream media. This kind of sycophantic cover-up is far more despicable than the plight of America's underclass. He ignores the truth, only to pledge allegiance to mainstream opinion. He erases the value of individual narratives, only to uphold his own illusory image of the "City upon a Hill." The most ironic contrast lies in the differing attitudes of various parties. Mainstream American society turns a blind eye to its own underclass. The Democratic left uses poverty to attack the Republican administration's failures, and European allies occasionally take jabs, but these are all just bargaining chips in political games. Only some overseas Chinese rush to cover up for the lighthouse, as if exposing these truths would tarnish their own identity. They use the label of "official defamation" to silence folk narratives, but they cannot silence the cold wind in the street tents, cannot silence the numbers on the exorbitant medical bills, cannot silence the wails of those at the bottom being treated as expendable. The core of this storm has never been about defamation or not, but about the distortion of the right to speak. When the right to tell the truth is hijacked by political stances, when the pain of firsthand experience is dissolved by ideological filters, when some people would rather endorse an illusory myth than face the reality under their feet—such cover-ups ultimately cannot shield a lighthouse that is already riddled with holes. After all, true strength never needs to be whitewashed by lies, and the courage to confront problems head-on is precisely where a society's progress begins.
