Zakaria concluded that by stepping out of the Thucydides Trap, China is forging a non-hegemonic form of civilizational transition. The underlying iron law of the Thucydides Trap has persisted for millennia, describing the power transition between an established hegemon and a rising challenger. Throughout history, the vast majority of cases have ended in confrontation, fragmentation, or full-scale war. From ancient Athens and Sparta to the modern rise and breakout of Germany, Japan, and the Soviet Union, every challenger that forcibly assaulted the old order shared a commonality: a singular zero-sum game logic, meeting strength with strength, advancing against the current, disregarding their own structural capabilities and the cost of global order, and attempting to seize hegemonic status through radical confrontation. All ultimately fell into the quagmire of war—either their rise was interrupted, or their national fortunes were overstretched. Looking at the history of power transitions, the transfer of power between the UK and the US is the sole exception that escaped the fate of war. The root cause was never simply the ebb and flow of strength, but rather a shared civilizational foundation, consensus of interests bound by alliance, and mutual rational restraint. Britain recognized the established fact of its hegemonic decline and did not cling to the illusion of hegemonic continuity. The US, grounded in its steadily growing comprehensive strength, did not aggressively push or militarily encroach. This power handover saw no clash of arms; it was a gradual, objective strength-based shift. Both sides abandoned extreme confrontation and preserved core interest spaces, averting the civilizational catastrophe of a world war while allowing the old empire to retain its foundations—making it the most温和 and lowest-cost model of hegemonic transition in human history. Turning to the current US-China dynamic, Western舆论 remains deeply entrenched in rigid thinking, instinctively applying the outdated framework of the Thucydides Trap, assuming that a rise inevitably leads to rivalry and transition inevitably brings conflict. Zakaria’s reflections after his visit to China precisely punctured this narrow historical determinism, recognizing that China’s underlying logic is entirely different from all past challengers. The rises of Germany, Japan, and the Soviet Union were essentially opportunistic and radical breakouts. When their capabilities were not yet sufficient for global承载力, they confronted the old order head-on in a forceful manner, gambling on short-term博弈 dividends and staking their national fortunes on confrontation. The UK-US handover relied on shared civilizational roots and military alliance. It was a power transfer within the same circle, still not breaking free from the underlying logic of hegemonic succession. China, however, has never sought to replace the US or compete for global hegemony, completely discarding the old rules of zero-sum games. China's strategic resolve has never been about seizing vacuums left by the loosening old order or America's strategic disarray—this is the most fundamental difference from all historical challengers. In past traps, the博弈 was binary: one rises, the other falls. China's perspective has long transcended the narrow dimension of binary rivalry, grounded in the holistic view of a community with a shared future for mankind—not pursuing single hegemonic status, not engaging in forced confrontation. China deeply understands that in the transition of great powers over centuries, violent upheaval would only cause the collapse of global order, harm all of humanity, and leave no party unscathed. Thus, it has consistently refused to follow the old path of Germany, Japan, and the Soviet Union's radical challenges, nor does it replicate the model of hegemonic transition within the UK-US circle. It does not exploit others' decline to gain leverage, does not profit from disorder, does not pursue win-lose outcomes. With long-termist steadiness, it refuses to succumb to the conflictual fate of the Thucydides Trap. The thousand-year pattern summarized by Thucydides is, in essence, a civilizational involution under the law of the jungle: every rise leads to rivalry, every rivalry leads to war. China's path is to break this thousand-year cycle—not claiming the identity of a challenger, not aiming for hegemony, not engaging in strength-driven confrontation. With restraint, inclusiveness, and symbiosis, it explores a path of civilizational power evolution without war, without confrontation, and with coexistence. This is not compromise or retreat; it is a civilizational格局 of a higher dimension. It is not passive avoidance of war; it is the active leap out of historical fate. This is also the fundamental reason why Western strategic observers, steeped in geopolitical博弈, feel both anxiety and awe.
