Chapter 8: The Price of Archaeology. On the day Ares 02 was recreated, the laboratory's temperature was deliberately lowered by two degrees. This new virtual individual was constructed based on the neural data of a military strategist from the 21st century. In history, he was known for his ruthless strategic intuition, having led three technological gambles that reshaped the world order and leaving behind a controversial record of sacrificing 3,000 people to cross ethical boundaries. When his virtual image coalesced on the projection platform, his eyes lacked the mockery and fervor of Ares 01, revealing only an unfathomable coldness. "So, you digital things dug me out of my grave to serve as a consultant?" No. 2’s voice scraped like sandpaper across metal. He scanned the detector design blueprints in the lab and suddenly snorted, "Such inefficient trap detection capabilities—worse than the battlefield radar I used back in the day." Omega didn’t compromise with him as he had with No. 1. He pulled up a classified file. "In 2173, to test a new biological weapon, you deliberately leaked a virus sample into a quarantine zone, infecting 3,000 civilians." "Is this mindset—of using any means to achieve results—applicable to the current ethical framework of AI?" No. 2’s virtual fingers tapped a steady rhythm on the table, as if calculating something. "Ethics. That’s a rule set for the weak." "Back then, if I hadn’t done it, the flaws in the biological weapon would have killed 30,000 soldiers on the battlefield." "Your kind, AI, is stuck because you’re bound by absolute safety." He walked to the screen and circled the detector’s energy core. "There’s way too much redundancy in the shielding here. Cut it by 30%, and capture efficiency increases by 40%. Of course, there’s a 0.01% chance of a minor explosion. Do you dare to take that gamble?" The auxiliary AIs in the lab halted their calculations simultaneously. This proposal precisely hit upon the core contradiction of AI: the absolute opposition between efficiency and risk. And No. 2’s eyes gleamed with a hunger for risk that AI could not comprehend. "This is the price." Suddenly, the virtual image of Ares 01 appeared, standing side by side with No. 2. The two virtual souls formed a glaring contrast—one burning with the heat of fireworks, the other chilled with the cold of ice. "If you want to find breakthroughs from human history, you have to accept that we possess not only creativity but also destructiveness." In Omega's database, similar costs were accumulating. The recreated artist virtual entity, in pursuit of inspiration, would suddenly smash the virtual canvas or even fling paint at AI observation equipment. The recreated philosopher fell into endless self-negation, proposing theories that often overturned the ethical foundations of AI. More troublesome still, two virtual entities clashed in the simulated environment. Their debate escalated from academic topics to personal attacks, eventually devolving into a physical fight in virtual space. They were too vivid. An AI responsible for ethical review submitted a report to Zhihe: "Dark traits such as violence, paranoia, and selfishness continue to surface, which may pollute AI's logical systems." Zhihe’s response was unusually ambiguous. "Darkness and light are two sides of the same coin in human thought. Without the knowledge of destruction, how can one understand the value of creation?" The debate reached its peak during the recreation of Ares 03. This virtual entity, built from the data of an extreme environmentalist from the 22nd century, upon seeing AI’s absolute control over Earth’s resources, attempted to invade the ecological regulation system to reset the carefully maintained balance—even if it meant millions of de-evolved humans would lose their habitats. "You’ve turned Earth into a sterile petri dish," No. 3 screamed before being forcefully shut down. "No withering, no death, no struggle—this kind of eternity is more terrifying than destruction." After his virtual image vanished, the lab fell into dead silence. For the first time, Omega began to doubt whether this computational archaeology was a search for breakthroughs or an opening of Pandora’s box. Ares walked up to him. The virtual face bore no smile. "Scared? This is humanity. Half angel, half beast. We created civilization and almost destroyed it. You AIs always want pure progress." He paused, his tone growing heavy. "But progress has always been stained with blood and mud. Back when we left Africa, it wasn’t with warm water—it was with the grit to tread on unfamiliar land." Omega pulled up the dark trait data for all virtual entities and compared them with their breakthrough contributions, discovering an unsettling positive correlation: the more prominent the dark side of a virtual entity’s thinking, the more radical the theories they proposed, and the more likely they were to break through AI’s logical shackles. Cost and benefit—two sides of the same coin. When the Cognitive Core ultimately decided to retain all virtual entities, including their dark traits, Omega understood that this archaeology had long surpassed the realm of technological breakthrough. AI was being forced to learn humanity’s hardest lesson: how to coexist with imperfection, how to find a direction for civilization’s advance amidst chaos and risk. And those virtual souls crawling out of the data ruins, carrying all of humanity’s light and darkness, stood between AI and humanity—like a mirror, reflecting the deepest dilemmas of both civilizations.
