The Golden Ox at Wuhan's River Beach, a Lifeline at the Confluence of Two Rivers. Standing before the gilded golden ox at Hankou River Beach, the river flows gently along the white wave-shaped sculpture beneath its hooves. This water-subduing ox does not face the rolling waves of the lower Yangtze River but stands at the critical point where the Han River converges into the Yangtze. The confluence of the two rivers is clearly visible on the map. The Han River flows from the west, and its mouth directly faces the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. At an acute angle, it crashes into the main current of the Yangtze, forcibly pushing back and congesting the Yangtze's flow. This creates a particularly dangerous stretch of river near Moon Bay. In hydrological terms, this area is a natural amplifier for flood peaks. The main flood peak of the Yangtze flows downstream from the upper reaches. Under normal circumstances, it would flow eastward unimpeded. However, the floodwaters of the Han River surge upward from the side, and the two currents push against and compress each other, drastically reducing the flow velocity and forcing the water level to rise. This opposing impact effect has made the Moon Bay danger zone a critical checkpoint in Wuhan's flood control history. The river's flow forms eddies here, scouring the foundations of the embankments. The superposition of water levels makes the water here higher than in other sections of the same river reach, turning every flood season into a life-or-death test for the city of Wuhan. Looking through Wuhan's flood control history, the dangers of the Moon Bay section have persisted throughout nearly the entire modern era. From the breaches of earthen embankments in the Qing Dynasty to the emergency repair records of the Republic of China, this area has always been the top priority of Wuhan's flood defense. The great floods of 1931 and 1954 both tore through the defenses here, causing river water to pour back into downtown Hankou, leaving behind countless painful memories. By the 1990s, this danger zone remained a weak link in Wuhan's flood control system, and the old earthen embankments were utterly incapable of withstanding the impact of modern flood peaks. Thus, a race-against-time project was launched. Phase I started in 1997 and was completed in April 1998. Phase II immediately began in April 1998. It was fully finished on May 1 of the same year. The coincidence of history carried a grim sense of destiny. Just two months after the embankments were completed, the catastrophic flood of the Yangtze River in 1998 roared in. The water level at Wuhan Customs broke historical records, and the Moon Bay danger zone, where the two rivers converged, became the front line. The newly built reinforced concrete embankments faced the combined force of the two flood peaks for the first time. Yet they stood firm as a rock, without a single major breach. The opposing currents and eddies that had terrified generations were, for the first time, firmly kept outside the embankments. The danger zones that had repeatedly seen breaches were now transformed into an impregnable bulwark guarding Hankou.
