英文翻译
The First Act: First Meeting at the Riverside with Su Yu A downcast wanderer on Green Mountain finds no sleep; Gentle breezes urge verses on, wave after wave. Do not say drifting duckweed has no fixed abode— For whom does this lake’s clear emerald await? It is said that Su Yu, a scholar from Lingnan, graduated without securing a post and lodged temporarily in Xiamen. One afternoon, strolling alone in Nanhu Park, he saw the lotus pond brimming with green, stirred by a sudden sense of the unknown ahead. He composed this tune as he leaned on the railing in melancholy, when he heard a soft laugh behind him. Turning, he saw a young woman standing beneath a crape myrtle, clad in a moon-white dress, a silver bracelet on her wrist catching the sunlight, and a half-mended lotus leaf in her hand. "Wanqing happened by this evening to admire the green lotuses, And chanced upon a poet reciting elegant verses. Why need the lotus words be carried by the wind? A tiny ripple has already stirred in my heart lake." The woman, noticing his gaze, neither flinched nor avoided it, but instead recited two lines. Su Yu’s cheeks flushed slightly, realizing he had lost his composure. He quickly cupped his hands and said, "I am Su Yu. Forgive my rudeness, miss." The woman returned the greeting. "I am Lin Wanqing, a student at the Academy of Fine Arts. Your poem seemed tinged with sorrow. The scenery of Deer Isle is just right—why not open your heart?" Just as she spoke, a young man came bounding over, dressed in white as pure as snow, a jade pendant hanging from his waist. Seeing Wanqing, he laughed heartily. "Wanqing, I’ve been looking for you half the day, and here you are!" "Qingtian, seeking fragrance, I came by chance to Green Willow Ferry, And saw two jade-like people by the river’s edge. Since we both pity the beauty of the scene, Why not link verses together to celebrate spring?" The young man was named Qin Qingtian, the son of a local wealthy family, who had met Wanqing at an art exhibition. Seeing that Su Yu, though simply dressed, had a clear spirit in his brows, he invited him to join their outing. Su Yu, eager not to miss the chance to speak with Wanqing, quickly agreed. The three strolled slowly along the river. Suddenly, Qingtian pointed at a pair of twin lotuses. "How about we each write a quatrain on this theme?" The Second Act: Matching Verses Amid the Lotuses Qingtian: "The twin blossoms in the pond share dawn and dusk, Rooted in mud yet unsullied by earthly dust. I wish to be the linked branch of one heart, Laughing at wind and rain, fond lovers from the start." Qingtian’s writing was swift, his poem hiding an admiration for Wanqing. After reading it, Wanqing tapped the paper with her fingertip. "Brother Qin’s poetic style is bold and handsome, but the phrase 'unsullied by earthly dust' sounds like a description of yourself." Turning to Su Yu, she said, "Brother Su, your turn." Su Yu: "The twin lotus blooms, parted by a span of waves, Their hidden roots secretly tied—words unspoken, I save. If the clear breeze understands the pity of their toil, Let it not scatter them apart on the ocean’s soil." Su Yu’s poem concealed a heartfelt sincerity. Wanqing read it, a flicker of light in her eyes. Taking the brush and paper, she wrote one herself. Wanqing: "A pool of green leaves guards the frost-white flowers, The wind passes soundless, shadows slant in showers. Why need we ask the lotus’s heart with care? The bright moon will shine at last on the root we share." Her poem was impartial, yet seemed to hold a promise. Qingtian clapped his hands. "Well said: 'The bright moon will shine at last on the root we share.' Wanqing, your talent surpasses ours both." Su Yu nodded. "Miss, your breadth of mind far exceeds ours." As they chatted and laughed, dusk deepened. Qingtian invited them to his home for dinner. Su Yu was about to decline, but Wanqing said, "Brother Su is alone in a strange place. Why not come along? I’ll be the host and thank you both for the poems." The Third Act: Turbulence at the Evening Banquet The three arrived at Qingtian’s home, an elegant courtyard with a dining table set by the pond. Qingtian turned out to be an excellent cook. Su Yu was not a good drinker but could savor the fragrance of tea. Wanqing played the zither, her rendition of "Wild Geese Descend on the Sandy Shore" vivid and flowing. After three rounds of wine, Qingtian took up the zheng and played with passionate strings. "I’ll take the sound of the zheng as a medium and compose a lyric to the tune of ‘Lian Lian Hua’ for Wanqing!" Qingtian: "Lian Lian Hua: The moon soaks the river, the wind toys with the willow, The water caresses ice-like strings, stirring the lotus heart to tremble. I would hide deep passion in jade-like wrinkles, But fear to startle the gulls and herons, who first turn back. Let me strive in drinking before the cup, Seeking verses in drunkenness, for the sake of that lovely face. If I could have you always by my side, A thousand gold pieces could not buy this feeling so deep." The passion in his words filled the air. Su Yu’s fingertips trembled slightly. He picked up a pair of chopsticks, tapped a bowl, and chanted a lyric to "Zhe Gu Tian." Su Yu: "Zhe Gu Tian: The bamboo courtyard’s breeze is clear, the moon half-slant, The zheng’s sound stirs the guest’s heart to enchant. A thousand gold is easily got, true love hard to buy, One meal’s grace is well remembered—a joy that won’t die. Thoughts throng deep, feelings find no sleep, I fear this happy meeting is but a flower that blooms and then weeps. If I go out into the street tomorrow, I’ll dream still of the old green gauze of sorrow." The poem turned and twisted, yet hid reluctance. Wanqing poured more wine and recited a quatrain with a smile. Wanqing: "The zheng’s voice and the lyric’s tune each has its own grace, In drunkenness, poetry’s sentiment fills every place. Do not vie for victory before the cup— The clear breeze does not chase the floating froth." With that, she divided the wine equally into their cups. "Brother Qin’s family learning is profound; Brother Su’s natural talent is innate. Both feelings are fully expressed." Late at night, the feast broke up. Qingtian drove to see Wanqing home, while Su Yu walked alone under the moonlight. Seeing gardenias blooming at the alley’s mouth, he composed another quatrain. "Fragrance of flowers accompanies the traveler all the way, Moonlight like water steeps the heart’s sutra day by day. If in future I recall tonight’s affair, I’ll laugh at the fool who stirred this emotion here." The Fourth Act: Debating Talent on the Painted Barge The next day, Qingtian invited them to visit Gulangyu Island. They took a painted barge across the sea. A sea breeze brushed their faces. Qingtian pointed at the statue of Zheng Chenggong in the distance. "Our forebears built their achievements here. We should emulate them. Brother Su, what ambition do you have?" Su Yu: "Waves beat the lonely tower, reaching distant skies, The hero’s relics lie in the setting sun’s eyes. A scholar has no plan to pacify the border; I learn from the tide’s roar to nurture the wind’s order." Qingtian: "Standing with a sword, one’s spirit is naturally proud, Heroes arise in every age from the crowd. Do not sigh that a scholar has no merit to claim— The waves beneath his brush can also stir the world’s fame." The two poems revealed their respective ambitions. Wanqing was by the window, painting the seascape onto a scroll. Hearing them, she laughed and said, "Brother Su’s poem is like a hidden dragon in the deep, Brother Qin’s like a fierce tiger descending the mountain. Both are excellent." She handed the painting to them. On it, waves rolled and the boat rocked, but a pair of white egrets flew wing to wing. Wanqing: "Inscription on the painting: The boundless blue waves touch the base of clouds, The painted barge gently rocks, bearing the moon-spirit’s crowds. Most touching are the egrets, knowing my heart: They do not, like gulls, each fly apart." Su Yu’s heart stirred at the sight of the white egrets in the painting. But Qingtian said, "Wanqing’s painting hides deep meaning. Those egrets are surely a pair." Wanqing smiled without replying, then rolled up the painting. "Ahead is Shuzhuang Garden. I hear there’s a zither exhibition. Let’s go and listen." The three disembarked. The faint sound of a zither reached them. Su Yu recognized the melody—it was "Three Variations on the Plum Blossom." Qingtian, however, detected the pine-wind spirit in the strings. Wanqing watched them both and suddenly felt that the wind of Deer Isle was more lingering than any painting.
