**Act Eight: A Heart Hidden in the Painting Pavilion** On a late afternoon, the painting studio overlooked the lake, with bamboo blinds hanging by the window. Wanqing was finishing the lotus pond painting she had left incomplete the other day. Su Yu stood by the desk grinding ink, and noticing her brush pause, he said softly, "A couple of dragonflies at the curled edges of the lotus leaves would bring it to life." Wanqing smiled, added a few ink dots, and indeed the scene became lively. Suddenly, footsteps approached. Qin Tian entered carrying an ancient scroll. "I found the genuine 'Fishermen's Joy on Egret Island'—Wanqing, come see!" As they unrolled it, misty waves stretched into the distance, fishing boats carried moonlight, and egrets took flight in surprise. Qin Tian pointed and said, "For this kind of spirit, you should learn how to use ink thick and thin." But Su Yu remarked, "I prefer the charm of an unmoored boat in the painting." The two argued, but Wanqing took the scroll and examined the inscription. "The painter had intention, the viewer comprehends—why force it?" She then picked up a brush and wrote a poem: "Ink and brush differ through a thousand years, Intention hides the wind of Egret River. Look at the old fisherman's heart on the boat— He does not ask east or west among the waves." Qin Tian saw the line "does not ask east or west" and knew she was advising him not to cling. He laughed, "Wanqing always speaks Zen." But Su Yu, gazing at the lone boat in the painting, murmured: "The solitary boat drifts without a shore, Yet remaining light shines through the dark night. If one can capture this shadow in paint, Why moor and ask about the returning boat?" Wanqing heard him speak of drifting so calmly, and her heart stirred. That afternoon, rain came. The three gathered around the ancient scroll. Suddenly Qin Tian said, "Next month I'm going to Hangzhou for a painting exhibition. Wanqing, would you like to come? If Su brother is willing to join, I'll cover all your food and lodging." Su Yu was about to decline, but Wanqing said, "Brother Su just got a publishing contract; he's probably busy. I'll think about it." When the rain stopped, Su Yu took his leave. Wanqing saw him off at the alley entrance, handing him a packet of lotus seeds. "Picked the day before yesterday. Boil them into porridge to calm your mind." Su Yu took it; their fingertips touched, and he pulled back as if shocked, murmuring only, "Act Nine: A Dispute over Poetry Manuscripts." Su Yu added the lotus seeds Wanqing had given him to his medicinal porridge, and felt much better. While organizing his poetry drafts, he noticed that beside the lines written that day in the rainy alley, Wanqing had somehow added a tiny inscription: "Rain stops, wind settles, fair one awaits the returning heart." His heart pounded wildly. He quickly hid the draft at the bottom of his trunk. Unexpectedly, Qin Tian came to visit the next day and saw the trunk lid open. He caught sight of the inscription and his expression changed slightly, but he smiled and said, "Brother Su must be hiding some fine verses in your drafts. May I have a look?" Su Yu quickly closed the trunk. "Just scribbles, not worth mentioning." Just then Wanqing arrived and, noticing their odd expressions, asked with a smile, "What’s the matter, so reserved?" Qin Tian brought up the Hangzhou exhibition. "My father has already arranged the itinerary. If Wanqing comes, I'll show you the withered lotus at West Lake—they have more character than those at the Six Bridges." Su Yu interjected, "Withered lotus may have bones, but they can't match the charm of new lotus with dew." Wanqing pursed her lips and smiled. "You two want another poetry duel? Let me set a theme: Lotus Dew." Qin Tian recited: "Jade plate holds dew facing dawn’s glow, Each drop like pearls adorning emerald pool. If one could hide light mist in a sleeve, Don't let warm sun melt longing away." Su Yu recited: "Lotus tip hangs a trembling drop, Afraid to startle fish below. A chill of clear dew melts into ink, Turns into verses—for whom to send?" On hearing "for whom to send," Wanqing flushed slightly. She took Su Yu’s draft and added after it: "Dew falls on water’s heart; fish know my intent." Qin Tian watched silently for a long while, then said, "I’ll go home first to prepare for the journey. Wanqing, let me know when you’ve decided." After Qin Tian left, Su Yu fondled those words. Wanqing called out, "Brother Su, if you go to Hangzhou, I’ll go with you." **Act Ten: A Decision in the Boat** On the night before departing for Hangzhou, the three took a painted pleasure boat to cruise the Egret River. Moonlight spread over the water like scattered silver. Qin Tian played a newly made seven-string zither, named "Invitation." The music was tender, as if speaking his heart. Su Yu played the bamboo flute Wanqing had given him; the flute and zither harmonized yet carried a touch of reluctance. Wanqing stood by the window, gazing at the lights on the shore. Suddenly she said, "Tomorrow when we board the ship, I have something to say." At dawn the next day, as the boat was about to set sail, Wanqing brought out a painting—it was the lotus pond picture the three had worked on together. In the inscription area she had added a new verse in the tune of "Que Qiao Xian": "Together with wind and rain, Flute and zither harmonize, Three shadows ripple on green waves. Foolish hearts need not ask about winning or losing— Only remember the misty trees of Egret River. The boat is about to cast off, The traveler is about to leave the shore. From now on, wherever the horizon lies, Starshine originally does not shine on pairs alone— It only illuminates a true heart revealed." She tore the painting in two. Half she handed to Qin Tian: "Brother Qin, your family background, talent, and looks are rare in this world. But my heart is like a solitary boat—it cannot enter painted beams and carved rafters." The other half she gave to Su Yu: "Brother Su, your brush holds heaven and earth; your heart harbors ravines. I am willing to follow the solitary boat and share the rivers and lakes with you." Qin Tian took his half, first stunned, then burst into laughter. "I’ve long known your heart, Wanqing. I just couldn’t resign myself. Today, seeing you two of one mind, I admit defeat—but I don’t concede." He took out a jade pendant and pressed it into Su Yu’s hand. "This jade can ward off water calamity. I wish you fair winds on your journey ahead." As the boat sailed away, Qin Tian stood on the dock waving. Su Yu and Wanqing stood shoulder to shoulder at the bow. As Egret Island faded into the distance, Wanqing said softly, "Brother Su, can you compose another poem?" Su Yu looked at the morning light on the river and recited: "A boat bearing dreams heads to Qiantang, Banks hum verses sending old chapters away. It’s not that I blame myself for too much feeling— It’s only because you are the light in my heart." Wanqing leaned on his shoulder, smiling through tears. "From now on, our poems must be composed together."
