Episode Five: At Deer Island, she writes: "Rising at dawn, I push open the window to find mist still lingering; a wisp of lotus fragrance leads me up the tower. After hastily tidying the green hills, I hurry away, fearing that I might miss meeting my destined one." The next day, before dawn had fully broken, Su Yu woke up. Outside the window, light mist clung to the trees, and the subtle scent of lotus wafted in. He hastily dressed, tucked the bookmark into his bosom, and rushed straight to the spot where he had met the beauty the day before. At the Deer Island corridor, he saw the lotus pond floating with emerald leaves and dewdrops round as pearls, his heart uneasy. He composed a poem, "Recalling Jiangnan": "At dawn by the lotus pond, green leaves hold pearls round. Last night’s longing in the long night, today’s anticipation standing in the wind—may I not betray my former promise." Episode Six: Startled to meet—a lotus step lightly crossing the winding bridge, meeting just as the willow branches sway. Her cheeks blush as if dyed by morning clouds; her eyes bright like the moon at dawn. When her smile blooms, flowers lose color; when her brows knit, mist begins to clear. I wish to pour out my heart from the beginning, yet fear that rash words might be thrown aside. Now, the young lady, named Wanqing, was originally a student at the art academy. She had dropped her bookmark yesterday, and in her heart she also hoped for another meeting. Today, she deliberately wore a light purple cheongsam, pinned a jasmine flower at her temple, and came early to the pond. When she saw Su Yu, her heart thumped like a deer, but she composed herself on the surface, moving with lotus steps. When Su Yu saw her, he quickly bowed and said, "Miss, yesterday I found a bookmark. I believe it belongs to you, so I've come specially to return it." Wanqing pursed her lips and smiled. "You are thoughtful, sir. I was just thinking of it; I didn’t expect to see you today." Su Yu’s heart pounded like a drum, afraid of being rash. He simply handed her the *Zhegutian* poem he had composed yesterday: "Last night’s wind by the willows and lotus pond, meeting like a dream, hard to fully grasp. The bookmark secretly locks in a three-life fate; the poem draft lightly cuts half crimson. Deep in longing, shadows flicker, fearing the bright moon laughs at passion’s depth. Today I see you again—willing to become a lotus heart, shining red in the sun." After reading, Wanqing’s cheeks flushed crimson. In return, she composed a *Dianjiangchun* poem: "By chance we meet—heart waves secretly flow with fireflies. The fragrance stirs at my temple, just as love’s seeds are planted. About to speak, I pause, afraid the east wind might carry it away. My eyes are like a deep pool, pulling at your heart; I wish to embrace you in the lotus pond." Episode Seven: Rain veils the scene. A sudden downpour pours from the sky, blurring heaven and earth; the two take shelter together in a small pavilion. The green hills faintly reveal her jade-like shoulder; soft words pour out from the heart. Rain beats on the plantain, adding parting sorrow; wind sways the lotus, pouring out true feelings. Willing to become a pair of lovebirds with joined wings, unafraid of thunder and lightning. Just as they were talking, it began to rain again. The two took shelter in the small pavilion, the rain curtain like a screen. Su Yu saw that Wanqing’s clothes were slightly wet, her jade shoulder vaguely visible, and quickly handed her his coat. Wanqing accepted it shyly. Su Yu seized the opportunity and said, "Since I saw you, miss, I have been restless day and night. I wonder, miss…" Wanqing lowered her head. "I, too, am drawn to you, sir. But the road ahead is uncertain." Su Yu hurriedly said, "Even if the road ahead is rough, with you by my side, I am willing to face all difficulties." Wanqing lifted her eyes, a light shining in them. "Since you say so, I trust you, sir." Overjoyed, Su Yu braved the rain to break off a twin lotus blossom and presented it to her, reciting a poem: "In the sudden rain in the pavilion, we pledge our vow side by side; the twin lotus blooms bear witness to our deep love. Even if the road ahead is stormy, I will never betray you or my heart." Wanqing returned a poem: "In the rain, sharing the pavilion, our hearts are already stirred. The lotus branch given, the dream just begins. Willing to follow you, sir, across the horizon, smiling at frost, rain, wind, and ice." From then on, the two often sought secluded spots on Deer Island, exchanging poems and wine, enacting a modern version of the *Romance of the Western Chamber*—but that is a story for another time.
